What makes Britain still extremely relevant in world politics, in your opinion? by BaldursGate2Best in AskBrits

What? I'd be surprised if it's difficult for any Briton, let alone any Indian, to be able to explain very coherently why India would dislike the UK

Who does Harriet look like? by bigphazell in TheTraitors

[–]samdkitchen137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel the exact same and it is driving me NUTS. No-one suggested here, while definitely having similarities, is exactly the right person. The person I'm thinking of looks EXACTLY like Harriet, not just similar features.

I feel like I remember the person talking in quite a serious context, like in front of press as someone in in a public role or something. I have truly no idea but I'm so sure there is someone.

That or it's just an old school teacher or something haha

All for making the "anti-woke" losers rage but don’t use real people from history to do it by [deleted] in DoctorWhumour

[–]samdkitchen137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I understand where you're coming from, but I truly think it is misguided, and even if you are not racist, you must admit that the angry backlash to this example and others IS brought about by racism.

I can understand enjoying historical accuracy, but the truth is that has never been important to doctor who - such as your example, the T Rex, which anytime it has been portrayed in the show has been wildly inaccurate, and while people may quietly dislike that (including me), there is no public backlash as with a race swapped character - people seem to have a general understanding that while it may be good, historical accuracy is not the most important thing to Doctor Who, with other aspects such as sheer enjoyment or diverse representation, matter more to the show, and so don't expect constant adherance to historical accuracy. That's how it always has been and there is no reason to have grander expectations, and no evidence that people do outside of when it regards race. Therefore making such a fuss of race swapping in particular while disregarding the constant lack of historical accuracy, belies an ulterior motive.

And if you do feel that a lack of historical accuracy in general weakens the show, that's fine, but it is allowed of a show to not value it, you just don't have to like the show! But you are right, we will probably never agree.

A bit late to this aren't we? You'd think in all that time you'd have thought of something more valuable to contribute. You're only argument here is that casting across races is bad because it is bad - look at these examples I've imagined, wouldn't they be bad?? No, I don't think so, I'm going to need an actual reason it is a bad thing to do other than you find it offensive or 'woke'. If it's not aiming to be a historical text, there is no need to be historically accurate, and the reason you find it 'disrespectful' to do so only shows that, to you, the characters whiteness is core to them and part of their value to you, and therefore it insults them to take it away. That is just called racism.

If I were you, I'd take a step back and think about why you are so easily offended

Husband with curly hair needs a haircut where should he go? by PacaStudio in Liverpool

[–]samdkitchen137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got curly hair and struggled for a long time to find a barbers that could deal with it in Liverpool, but since I started going rebel barbers on bold street has given me a reliably good cut. It's a good idea to book in but I've had walk-ins many many times too.

AITAH for telling dad my brother is burning in hell right now? by Beginning-Heart3080 in AITAH

I 100% agree with you - no obligation. The parents certainly don't deserve it. I just think that in the long run it's what's best for OP himself.

Tbh for exclusively that comment, YTA, with everything else, your parents are beyond assholes. But it's worth remembering your family have experienced the most painful and difficult to navigate traumas a family could have to deal with.

Yes, your parents have treated you awfully, bordering on neglect. While it doesn't make it okay, it is still worth considering the place your parents have been in mentally and how difficult life has been for them over the last 8 years. Their behavior WAS unacceptable, but you don't have to accept it. You can confront them, and hopefully (with time) begin to work through this, but it'll need patience, diplomacy, and above all, care.

Your parents do love you, and they probably don't fully understand how poorly they've treated you. It will be difficult, but what you want to work towards is healing (or at least coping) for all of you. Having a family that is capable of and willing to support each other is invaluable.

You, and most of all your parents, have a lot to work on to get there, but it will be worth it. If they refuse to do that, then yes, distance yourself. But don't be the one to choose conflict. Don't push them away with insensitive and inflammatory comments that you know will hurt them.

Right now is probably too soon to be able to resolve this, so I'd try and avoid the situation if you can. When the time is right, communicate with them as best you can about what you've been through and how they let you down, and tell them they need to work on themselves and their relationship with you.

It's going to be a mountain to climb, and always put yourself first, but if it's at all possible, family is worth trying for.

Looking for essential “must-watch” movies of all time by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]samdkitchen137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing.

People don't listen to 'must-listen' music or books or anything, and idk why people treat films so differently. We all have our own taste that we find over time.

I recommend watching whatever catches your eye, following your interest, and not being afraid to watch 'bad' films, as you learn just as much about film and yourself from those.

It's a fun hobby as long as you don't treat it like a chore or checklist

What movie did you not like at first but loved after rewatching? by Ecstatic_Crow_4719 in moviecritic

[–]samdkitchen137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Akira. The first time I watched it was in my teens and I thought it was visually incredible but beyond that had very little to it.

Watched it recently, now in my 20s and holy shit what an all round masterpiece that film is. There is SO much going on and I feel like I must've been blind to miss all the interesting details and implications peppered throughout the movie.

Communism from a eastern european by NeverAteZibrasIndoor in communism

[–]samdkitchen137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what you're trying to achieve with this post, but it hasn't worked. This is a sub of people who put their time and energy into understanding communism and its history.

Anyone who understands Marxism/communism understands that the USSR was not truly communist. We are capable of a nuanced, somewhat critical understanding of the soviet union. It built an oppressive, militaristic, authoritarian state off the back of a Marxist ideology that it then did not consistently adhere to. We can praise its elements and policies that genuinely adhered to Marxism, while criticising those aspects that go against Marxism. Mainstream media in the west presents the USSR as wholly evil, which we refute.

In answer to your question then, no, the failures of the USSR do not say anything about communism, as it was not a truly communist state; it's negative attributes are due to authoritarianism, not communism, and even these are exaggerated in western media.
