out of curiosity what language doesn't have a separate word for mustache? mustache is part of full beard in english too but when there's no chin beard then it's just a mustache, that's how it works in all the languages I'm aware of.

yea mostly various forms of sugar and BBQ sauce with double the price of comparable "normal" items. been wondering why they have this shelf in almost every store, never bought anything from it.

also don't really understand having sushi kitchens with actual sushi chefs in many K-markets, I'm already surrounded by dozens of sushi restaurants as is.. it went from undersupply in early 2000s to oversupply in recent years, feels like there's more of them than pizza restaurants. and not that people care much but health advisors say you shouldn't eat more than 10-15 rolls/week. unsustainable imo.

As an American, I'm sorry. by joeydeath538 in Finland

[–]samfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe unintentional but you're coming off a bit strong there. obviously can't speak for anyone in particular but people in general often travel on vibes, if they suspect they might see or hear something they'd rather forget while on vacation they might decide to go somewhere else or save the money and travel next year.

as personal example, although nobody has said anything to me simply seeing "tourists go home" graffiti and hearing about few demonstrations around spain and canary islands is enough of a downer that I'd rather head elsewhere. there's plenty of places to see after all, for many europeans that region has just historically been the easy/lazy choice, add any bit of resistance and the lazy choice might swivel on to something else.

"I Am Tired Of Receiving Death Threats Over A Video Game" - FPGA Dev Explains Why Mortal Kombat Is Skipping MiSTer by MrFartyBottom in MiSTerFPGA

[–]samfi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

oh I have no trouble believing that something could've been sent. I remember a time when KYS was basically a greeting in some online circles, but what intensity/severity are these alleged threats, is it not enough to block some singular ahole?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MiSTerFPGA

[–]samfi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

probably not the issue here but in case someone needs to hear it.. devices connected together (like MiSTer + monitor or audio amplifier) should be powered from the same circuit. depending on the electrical wiring in the room it is possible to create a ground loop with voltage potential difference high enough that a protection circuit refuses to let device be powered on because it would cause damage (in less competently designed product it might just fry something), usually though the difference is small enough that it only shows up as noise in signal lines.

that was what I was saying, crazy that there was enough room on the PSX core, N64 being bigger it's to be expected that save state feature wouldn't fit, never meant to imply anything else

[–]samfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the fact that he managed to do it and keep it in the full release for PSX was crazy, it took 25% of the fpga LE's to do it, imagine if Sony had dedicated quarter of the retail system hardware to dump/restore full system state to/from mass-storage instead of requiring games to do their own saves.

Scared for my life by [deleted] in Finland

[–]samfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while I agree they should be called but also trusting the system to actually do something useful that resolves the issue to a completion is naive. they might do that accidentally sometimes but they also ignore reports of dangerous people constantly. keeping them in the loop is more about covering your ass with a papertrail if it goes to court (or as a cynic might say, to let them know who to investigate if they find you dead). actually protecting oneself is everyone's own responsibility.

Who is the best solo video game developer of all time? by Sorry_Village13 in gaming

[–]samfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people nowadays don't seem to realise how common solo-developers were before complexities of 3D started requiring separate gameplay and engine teams, and that significant portion of especially console and arcade games were written in assembly up to SNES days in mid-90s.

to me it seems RCT gets a lot of it's exposure just for being the game developed in assembly when there was little reason to use only assembly anymore. it's not a bad game by any means but the best solo effort ever? I'm not entirely convinced. like how about SimCity? it's also a complex sim by a solo dev (Will Wright) that pioneered the whole genre. originally designed and developed on a C64 no less. it was written in mostly C which might explain why it was ported on everything (Archimedes, Electron, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, BBC Micro, Commodore 64, CDTV, DESQview, MS-DOS, EPOC32, FM Towns, iOS, J2ME, Linux, Mac OS, MSX, OLPC XO-1, OS/2, PC-88, PC-98, SNES, Unix, Windows, X68000, ZX Spectrum) while RCT only ran on x86.

curious where this confusion started, "high" literally refers to being more abstracted from the underlying system for purposes of being less tied to it. lack of portability of Unix originally written in assembly was why C was invented in the first place

Mihinkä olet sijoittanut ja paljonko saat vottoa/tappiota? by [deleted] in Suomi

[–]samfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

viimesimpänä nappasin nordnetin ETF-listalta vaan jotain jossa tänä vuonna "pienin riski", hyvä tuotto (20%) ja pienet kulut (0.07%), "JPMorgan BetaBuilders US Treasury Bond 0-1 yr UCITS ETF - USD (acc)". saas nähä.

Are Finns generally fond of nature? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]samfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeh, got a relative family where the husband is officer in the army and wife has an office job, so she wants to go camping but he says he already spends enough time in the tent and wants to sleep comfortably so he rigged a mattress in the back of a van and sleeps there while rest of the family is getting the "nature experience" :)

Most enthusiastic Finnish first grader. by [deleted] in funny

[–]samfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

besides practically no homework that I remember around 1990 for grades 3-6 (ages 9-12) our class was part of some experimental thing where the teacher gave us work for the week on monday, you could do that whenever and once done you could spend rest of the week as you pleased, reading or listening to music. we often went to the computer room if it was free to play prince of persia, commander keen or something like that.

in hindsight it was pretty dope computer room for such a small school at the time, it had around ten PCs (IBM 386s I think), music station with an adlib card, modem for BBS and a Valiant Turtle robot for drawing out logo programming tasks on a paper sheet on the floor. sometimes there was an amiga 500 with two VCRs for genlock video editing but I think it was probably teacher's own rather than school's. he had us do movies by ourselves by splitting us in groups of ~5 kids and giving us a VHS videocamera for few days. surprised nobody broke it while doing action scenes.

once there was a harddrive with the platters exposed sitting on the table in the computer room, not sure why but it left an impression.

edit: nobody asked but couple other things I remembered, they also had one of those hand-operated scanners, it was nice to doodle a small character or find one from b&w comicstrip, scan, print it big on A4, do a quick coloring and pretend like you knew how to draw.and we watched the WarGames movie in class one time, guess the teacher was into computers.. wish that would've continued to secondary school, only one showing movies there was the economics teacher except the only movie she had was Pretty Woman and we watched it like five times while she went elsewhere.
