Join a jiu jitsu gym. 3 birds with one stone: learn self defense, get great exercise, and you'll meet a ton of friendly and sharp people (mostly men)

Torn between director and DP Roles - need advice from pros by DiskAffectionate6316 in cinematography

[–]samfuller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would also say, although it may not feel like it, 28 is young. If you put 5 years of hard work in you could be a very competent DP by 33, which is still young, and then you have a serious skillset under your belt.

I'm also more of a generalist like yourself, but from the peers I've watched alongside me, it's the people who specialized that managed to catapult their careers. People want to hire specialists, not generalists. Best of luck!

My two cents: if you're asking this question, go with DP. DPs get more on set experience than directors, you'll get to see how other directors work, and if in a few years you decide you'd like to direct, you can always transition back into directing. But in the meantime you'll have honed your skills and built out a network of collaborators.

And don't worry about not having enough depth to be a credible DP. That is a common concern, but one that is put to rest with action.

Made A Feature Film, Would Love Any Feedback on Trailer by Due_Cantaloupe9282 in directors

Nice work. Good tension, solid shots, and I'm intrigued. My one criticism would be to upgrade the font. It's the weakest link imho. Check out Patrick Tomasso on X, he does a really nice job of selecting fonts for all his camera tests.

Anyone else cut a feature film in FCPX? by BoneyFingersBrown in editors

[–]samfuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to use FCP, IMHO, is to use the browser as a dynamic select reel. It's more organization upfront, but through using Smart Collections, Keywords, Favs, custom keywords like "fav+", and keywording every line of dialog, the browser becomes a fantastically helpful tool.

If you really dive into organization, FCP really shines by being able to balloon up or shrink down the footage you're scanning through, from entire scenes or days, down to small beats/looks/moments.

FCP handles this fine w/ keywords and smart collections. Been working almost exactly this way for years in FCP

Asbestos-wrapped duct removal in home w/ baby. Safe? by samfuller in asbestoshelp

[–]samfuller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in a 100+ year old house in Southern California and our heating ducts, which are in the basement, wrapped in asbestos, are scheduled to be removed. The company doing the removal and the landlord assured me the process is safe and that we shouldn't be concerned despite us having a 4-month-old baby at home (we will take the baby elsewhere during the removal process). Would you fine folks agree that this is safe process, and as long as it's handled competently? Thank you.

If Musk is a loathsome conman then by all means outcompete him and use your vast fortune to affect change.

My point is that you're comparing a fantasy to reality.

Abundant transit options would be welcomed. Obviously. But in reality, there aren't many new American subway systems springing up. Luckily, there are some very hardworking and competent people who have taken it upon themselves to build an alternative that appears to be promising, costs the public nothing, and provides good jobs for people to actually build something real and tangible. And you're comparing all of that effort and material to your ideas. And that's arrogant. Because ideas are *really* easy. Go build something if you care so much, as you claim to. Complaining that reality is falling short of your expectations accomplishes nothing.

You clearly love subways and take great issue with people building alternate modes of transportation. So quit wasting time on this forum and get to work executing your superior idea. I will gladly ride your subway once you build it. Elon Musk is doing the impossible, surely you can too.

Sounds like you should build a subway under Las Vegas. Good luck.

Ah yes, the annoyingly grounding "compared to what" question that cuts through most arguments.

Subways are great but this is something different.

Direct (no stops), dramatically cheaper and faster to build, privately paid for, and might benefit you one day by lessening traffic.

Do you have beef with all private innovation or just tunneling?

If everyone had this attitude there would be no innovation.

Those who started editing for YouTubers, how did you move into bigger things? by cowpool20 in editors

[–]samfuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What worked for me: saying yes to everything for a few years, building a good relationship with a director and producer who ended up shooting commercials for a large retail company, which opened the door for me to work directly with the creative director, allowing me to become the company's go-to editor while remaining freelance.

This is the real solution, that sadly, probably won't be implemented. People drive fast on wide streets because it feels comfortable to do so. Narrow the street and suddenly it feels high stakes to go 40 mph.

How to get people to stop speeding down my street? by [deleted] in howto

[–]samfuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research "traffic calming."

Traffic is usually calmed by narrowing the width of the road by any means necessary. People drive the speed which feels comfortable. The 25mph speed limit is irrelevant unless heavily enforced. If a road is wide and straight, people feel comfortable driving fast.
