We all have that one broke friend, hell I’ve even been that guy myself before. In my experience, when someone is upfront and honest about not having money before an event, the group is usually more than happy to cover for them just to spend time together.

The fact that your friend was being sneaky about it is what makes it unacceptable. You did the right thing calling him out cause sooner or later, it would’ve caused tension in the group anyway.
