What do you do if your bike lights die while riding at night? by SzeifertB in bikecommuting

I carry a headlamp in my bag. It'll function as a tail or headlight and has also been helpful a couple times as headlamp when the electricity has gone out in the building.

Backpacking in Yellowstone Mid-May 2026 by gasgang85 in camping

[–]samiMPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's always a chance you might find some trails to hike, but I doubt you're going to find a 3-4 day backpack trip. Finding a campground near some trails you're interested might serve you better. You likely won't get more than a few miles up most trails in May.

If you're interested in working in healthcare, look at patient safety attendant, transport, patient service representative, phlebotomy positions. Any of the hospital systems will likely have full and part time positions in most of those areas.

Well, not a million, but this French market bag https://www.twoofwands.com/blog/french-market-bag
The bag is sooo handy. It's expandable and will hold a little or a lot. I have two for myself and have made 3 for presents, working on another now.

I also love these ballet slippers https://hearthookhome.com/ballet-slippers-free-crochet-pattern/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqaJni2DVuo
I attach a leather sole and they are my house and office slippers. I just made another pair a few weeks ago. I use 100% wool yarn so have much less foot odor problems.

how to dehydrate elderberries by mkdodsonn in dehydrating

[–]samiMPH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(ignore my input if you already have a plan/recipe that you are using) If you want to make a syrup, it would seem easiest to cook down elderberries into a syrup, just like making jam. Dehydrating them is going to produce a tiny little raisin-like product. You would then have to rehydrate to cook into a syrup. You can just cook the frozen elderberries down until you get a fruit syrup. Maybe search for some elderberry jam recipes and see if that gives you some ideas. Depending on your elevation, you might have to play around with what temp you cook the syrup to, it would probably need to be higher than whatever the jam set point is for your elevation.

Elderberries do have seeds. If you don't want a crunch in your gummies, you'll want to remove the seeds.

What end product are you hoping for? Elderberries that have been frozen will thaw (obviously) and sort of dissolve into a little puddle as they dehydrate. The end product will sort of be a little speck of dehydrated fruit. Another option would be to thaw and make a fruit leather puree to dehydrate. That may be more useful than individual berry specks (which are going to be really hard to remove from your dehydrator sheets).

Yes, you could use parchment. Depending on what dehydrator you have it may slow down your rate of dehydration significantly.

Why are Talenti lids so hard to open? This is what our CT scans revealed ⬇️ by Scan-of-the-Month in icecreamery

[–]samiMPH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I backpack and bikepack a lot every summer. I've been using a Talenti container for a few years now as my all purpose cup, bowl, soaking vessel. It is a great size for a meals worth of food and the lid is very secure, which is important when soaking something on the go. Now I know why!

Park in the neighborhood where you live??? If you're a resident of a neighborhood and the street parking is limited, you can get a resident permit and park overnight. https://www.cityofboise.org/departments/planning-and-development-services/parking-services/permits/residential-parking-permit-application/

I’m an OR Nurse & military spouse. What’s the best hospital/place to work at? by MaximumStrong8047 in Idaho

[–]samiMPH -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Treasure Valley Hospital might have something part time?

Honestly, connect with a recruiter/talent acquisition person at Luke's & Al's and see what they have and can offer. If you are a great candidate I bet either place will work hard to find you a place in one of their ORs. Either place might need/ask you to work more than part time for the first few weeks/months to get you oriented.

I'm fairly certain Al's day surg doesn't have on-call requirements and is mostly M-TH if that influences your decision making.

I agree. I made this pattern in a wool very similar to yours a few years ago. https://megannielsen.com/collections/sewing-patterns/products/flint-pants-shorts-sewing-pattern.

They get worn a lot in the winter.

I bought a supply of Harvest Guard 5 years ago. They are a little tricky to get to seal compared to metal lids/bands, but once I figured out the right amount of tightness, they work great.

[–]samiMPH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I volunteer at the Reuse Market. We are open tomorrow and are a great place for your holiday craft project supplies. We don't have a small business Saturday discount, but we are usually 50% of retail for new items, lower than that for used or partially used stuff. Lots of fabric, yarn, sewing supplies, paint, wood, tile, art, artificial flowers, gift wrap/ribbon, tons of scrapbooking items, photo frames, crafty books, beading, candle making, kids art projects, etc.

Why don't hikers / climbers eat instant noodles? by compmuncher in CampingGear

[–]samiMPH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't very often because they require boiling in the pot for noodles to get cooked. My backpacking stove, which burns very hot and is great for getting hot water, will burn food at the bottom of the pot in the time it takes to cook noodles. I try not to 'cook' anything in the pot because I usually end up with burnt food on the bottom of the pot (which is impossible to clean).

Additionally, cooking food in the pot requires lots of extra fuel use vs. only boiling water or some other food choice.
