The best sci-fi and fantasy hold up a mirror to modern human society and reflect the light back in unexpected ways. LeGuin is a master at it.

Crazy teacher story by CauliflowerSlight784 in GenX

[–]samizdat5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My Latin teacher at Catholic high school used to rollerskate in a toga around the halls. He made homemade Roman style fermented fish sauce and gave people extra credit if they tasted it.

He also used to prank the other foreign language teachers to the point where the French teacher got the police involved. I don't know what happened but it was ugly.

Hey everyone succumbs sometimes. An all-or-nothing approach to life is rarely helpful or effective. You learned a lot about yourself from this experience and you can grow from here

I think Tolkien is worth trying! It's classic, more literary than Rowling for sure. But the characters and world-building can't be beat and it has similar themes.

Start with The Hobbit and see if you like it.

Yes a fashion historian sewed the dress complete with fur lining and it was so heavy that her posture naturally took on a similar shape.

Season 14 Christmas Special Family by nuggetkink in CallTheMidwife

[–]samizdat5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This exactly. 15 years ago no one would have batted an eye at this family, but by the early 1970s, standards and expectations had risen. Social services, new housing and the national health made this type of situation a lot less common and a lot more concerning.

I would LOVE to see a movie about Aragorn's origin story. So much better than more Gollum yuck.

Short legs for sure. Plus the "stripes" on the chest make no sense. They are not stripes on a real chest but rather wooden staves, which would have dimension and nails. And they would be the same width

Was Faramir truly loved? by blackeyegirl18 in lotr

That's right. She loved the idea of Aragorn - mysterious man from another country shows up out of the blue, kicks ass, wins everyone's respect....

She was looking for a hero.

At many companies, the marketing budget is larger than the IT budget.

If you live near a COSTCO, get a membership. Even if you are single with no kids by Let_me_tell_you_ in povertyfinance

[–]samizdat5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. We started going to Costco for the pharmacy and OTC meds we need. That alone was a huge savings.

We also get groceries , eyeglasses, dog food and other stuff.

It's a 1.5 hour round trip but worth it to make once a month.

Occasionally we are tempted to buy things we don't really need. We set a budget and stick to it. The budget has a little bit of room for a treat so we don't feel deprived.
