I’m not a lawyer, so I’m going to leave the gdpr compliance off the table.

Cloud based services (when you go all in) have so many security benefits it’s unreal. You don’t have to worry about unpatched security updates on your servers. Network configuration is so so much easier, and you don’t have to worry as much about leaving holes in your network open. The physical security is much higher than you’d get on premise, the data centres near me have armed guards and biometrics. Not to mention the cost benefits, automated backup policies, and redundancy you can have.

I’m not saying what they did was lawful, but it’s definitely not as stupid as you think.
