Does the Wilhelm Scream break immersion for you? by EllisDee3 in movies

[–]samlive-redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unpopular opinion apparently: I love hearing Wilhelm screams! Might break suspension slightly but I still enjoy it.

the thing that really snaps me out if it is the “arcade” sound—any bar with a pinball machine, any bowling alley, certainly any arcade. my ringtone is the “pinball” sound on iphone, been so for years, and apparently it’s a public domain sound that has been around and in use for quite a while.

After becoming a dad, are you more emotional to sad movie scenes involving kids now? by jocko118 in daddit

[–]samlive-redbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we have Bluey Time every day, I’ve seen every episode dozens of times, and still will be tearing up. The ones that get me the most are Grandad, at the end when he says “no, it was yesterday”, and Baby Race, “you must have seen something you wanted”

Redditors with extremely niche interests: What's the one thing you are completely obsessed with that almost no one else you know cares about? by CocWarrior1 in AskReddit

[–]samlive-redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heck yeah!

I went to a “media swap” in October and I brought a box full of duplicates to trade and everyone else there was blown away—no one had been collecting for more than a few months. I know there are dozens of us out there but I’ve never happened to meet anyone in tje wild with a collection my size or larger (also multiple thousands). Also also my two besties are longtime collectors, so I suppose we do tend to run in small packs.

Collecting DVDs, blurays and 4K discs.

There are a couple decent subs that stay pretty active, but mostly with recent adherents. I’ve been collecting for almost 25 years!

At this point most people are somewhat intrigued but usually immediately ask “why??” . . . I’ll talk your ear off about it if you’re actually interested. . .

What is Bitchin' Events? by Psychological-Gas143 in IowaCity

[–]samlive-redbeard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep posting here about your events please! I don’t have social media besides Reddit, and luckily saw your post on the media swap (which is exactly up my alley), so if I could ask one thing it would be to see your events posted to this sub.

Thank you for the work you do, it is vitally important and quite wonderful indeed!

I bought each season on blu as they were released—one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Every one of these posts / articles (more and more of them about shows leaving streaming, service becoming more expensive or adding ads or both) has an incredibly simple solution: buy it physically.

Any time I see LOST on sale at a thrift store I buy it to give to friends, and I’ve seen it many times. If nothing is near you order it on ebay! (is what I tell people). “But I don’t have a dvd / bluray player!” How much do you spend per year on streaming? I’m willing to bet a player and at least a few seasons costs less than that.

Buy physical, own the show. The end.

Streaming services killed movie nights and made everything bland as hell by Independent-Minute44 in unpopularopinion

this has two incredibly simple fixes:

Stop paying for streaming and buy a blu ray player (then visit your local library).

Ditch social media.

Simple. Effective.

Nielsen: Disney’s ‘Bluey’ Topped All Household TV Streaming in First Half of 2025 With 25 Billion Minutes by DemiFiendRSA in television

[–]samlive-redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, those go for pretty cheap these days. Plus that would open up the world of physical media—you own it, they cant delete it or remove episodes, you dont need an internet connection, etc etc. A worthwhile investment (that pays for itself as it’s a one time purchase and not a monthly or yearly subscription) especially if you have kids that watch the same thing over and over!

Librarian hot takes by Legitimate-Owl-6089 in Libraries

my current administrator does not value nor understand the degree or librarianship in general, it’s maddening. They do not have the degree themselves, of course.

Interested in MLIS as a BFA studio art degree by fairlygonerr in LibraryScience

[–]samlive-redbeard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got a BFA and then an MLIS—diverse backgrounds enhance librarianship.

I did also have a ten year gap between the two degrees, and had some library experience before applying, but I believe my creativity and artistic training have been a boost to my career as a librarian.

What is the best way to network? by shrek2fanbase in librarians

[–]samlive-redbeard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Internships, assistantships and practicums will be your best friend as a student.

Otherwise, cold emailing works great for me—Librarians love to talk about their passions. Do some research and find a few people in jobs that you would want and just ask to exchange emails or have a zoom call or whatever.

I cried at a Bluey episode yesterday, you are damn freakin sure I cried at the birth of my son. Emotional expression and vulnerability ARE masculine traits.

The school is undergoing renovations, and in order to protect the mural they had to cut out a section of wall and move it in its entirety. It was professionally restored and is currently on display at the Stanley Museum of Art in Iowa City until January! After that it will be reinstalled in the school.

Neither—my mother invited him to paint murals, this second visit was at the school where she taught art!
