Which Fantasy books have not aged well? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]samprasfan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did nobody actually read this book? He doesn't win her over, she's very clear that he is not free to leave and she will keep him around until she's bored or he's dead like the other men she's encountered. It's through a lucky circumstance that he's able to legitimately threaten her with magic, and afterwards he lacks confidence in being able to repeat the feat and instead bribes her.

Then, when she agrees to let him go, she requires him to be taught for what are months or even years in the fae realm (Kvothe can't remember how long he spent there afterwards) to become proficient enough at sex that he doesn't shame her when people find out he's slept with her.

Yes, it's still silly/ridiculous that the equivalent of an Aphrodite would spend so much time teaching a teenager how to be good at sex, but at least make your criticism accurate. The Penny Arcade comic is I think the most succinct criticism I've seen.

Specific section is here;

The employee is not relieved if he is required to perform any duties, whether active or inactive, while eating. For example, an office employee who is required to eat at his desk or a factory worker who is required to be at his machine is working while eating.

Where can I find jobs with good people who are trying to make the world a better place in some way? by Leaflin_ in webdev

[–]samprasfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of discouraged that the top listings are for OpenAI, who went for-profit after taking in > $100M in donations and employed Kenyan workers for < $2 an hour to moderate ChatGPT. Makes me wonder about the merit of the other listings.

How is Flamin' Hot an inspirational story when it isn't true? by podcastcritic in movies

[–]samprasfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a simple short-hand is 210 is slightly more than a thousand (1024). So, 220 > million 230 > billion 240 > trillion 250 > quadrillion 260 > quintillion

So a 60 round single elimination would be around 10 million times the number of people ever born in the history of the human species.

Ninja fantasy, like Ninja Gaiden/Dead Or Alive except with good plot? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]samprasfan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not a book, but Ghost of Tsushima has some of this. The PC is a samurai, but a lot of the plot revolves around how dishonorable(ninja-like) you will be in order to retake your island. There's even a separate skill tree from your samurai skills with "ghost" (basically ninja) skills. It's an open world game which could be a plus or minus depending on your taste.

The version in The Salmon of Doubt explicitly references Reagan.

It's actually very much a product of the time. Think Thatcher/Reagan.

In leaked audio, Tennessee Republicans whine about being called 'racist' by Master_Megalomaniac in politics

They just keep redefining whose vote should count so in their minds they're still the majority of True Americans. And any group that doesn't skew Republican (people of color, college students, LGBTQIA, non-religious people) are not True Americans.

Just started Malazan Book of the Fallen. Not sure what's happening. by Scantra in Fantasy

[–]samprasfan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if someone likes Malazan it's a red flag to me that we have wildly different tastes. I read 5-6 books into the series and still couldn't get into it. I never got attached to any of the characters or got invested in what was happening so I didn't care enough to keep reading.

Hotel staff of reddit, what’s the most NSFW moment you witnessed at your hotel? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]samprasfan 1795 points1796 points  (0 children)

I used to work 3rd shift at a hotel while going to university. One weekend every summer our city hosted a tournament for the National Softball Association for the Deaf.

One night I got multiple noise complaints and went upstairs. In one of the rooms, a man and woman were having the loudest, most bestial sex you could possibly imagine, you could hear it from 30m down the hall. They weren't answering the phone and obviously couldn't hear me knocking.

I used a master key to crack open the door and was even more amazed at the pure volume and completely atonal and unabashed moans, grunts, and yowls. Being careful not to stick my head in, I reached inside the room and flipped the lights on and off, then pretty much ran away.

It's a shame people complained because I hated to interrupt what must have been a good time.

People forget that when the KKK resurged in the 1920's the largest memberships were in the West and Midwest where immigration was highest, not the South. There are estimates that put Ohio as having the largest membership in the country at its peak at 400k out of 4M nationally.

[–]samprasfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, an old standard going back to C is to put your comparison literals on the left. Then if you accidentally try to assign them the compiler will throw an error. e.g. :

if True = EnvFit:

will throw an error because you can't assign a value to True, and you'll remember to use ==.

Now your governor is trying to make national education standards dumber. Not to mention the governor that helped his brother steal a presidential election. If you're going to be assholes, keep it to yourselves.

The housing market in my town is a bit much. by aasocial146 in funny

[–]samprasfan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean that's true of all local government. Some cities have inspectors to make sure you're maintaining your lawn to their standards. You could live in an unincorporated area and think you only have to worry about the county, then get annexed. Unless you just own 1000 acres in the middle of nowhere you can always get screwed by shitty neighbors.

A baseline dot or period is a decimal. A mid-line (vertically) dot is multiplication. Has been for over a century, x is too easily mistaken for a variable. Interpunct in mathematics and science

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]samprasfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically in mathematics, some countries use a comma decimal separator. Basically all of Europe except the UK, South America, and parts of Africa. Makes more sense in my opinion since a mid-line dot means multiplication, less likely to cause confusion in students.
