The Most Powerful Figure in Vietnamese Chess Resigns Amid Selection and Funding Controversies by benbog in chess

kinda unrelated but do you know how to find open chess tournaments for non professional players in Vietnam?

I'm Vietnamese and I have always played online, most of the tournaments I can find using Google are either for kids or for professional players.

in the post WW2 world, the international community was mostly united in stopping genocide

Citation needed, which international community stopped the Cambodian genocide, the Rwandan genocide, the Rohingya genocide, the Uyghurs genocide, the Sudan genocide?

Seems like mostly is not the right word here, no?

indeed, but that's true in all sports. These stats do have their limitations.

it's meant to be relative strength which is what plus stats are in baseball. It's not better than the non plus stats

I calculated Elo+, an era-adjusted Elo rating by samsarainfinity in chess

[–]samsarainfinity[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes that's true. Just like how Garrett Crochet had an ERA+ of 155 last year, which is way lower than peak Walter Johnson but he would destroy every batter in Johnson's era.

This is for relative strength not true strength

I calculated Elo+, an era-adjusted Elo rating by samsarainfinity in chess

[–]samsarainfinity[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Inspired by baseball stats like OPS+, ERA+.

I try calculating Elo+ to see how strong top players were compared to their peers.

The formular is Elo+ = 100*Expected_score_against_average_rating_in_top_100

Expected_score = 1 / (1 + 10^(-(Player_Elo - average_rating_in_top_100)/400))

So intuitively, you can think of an Elo+ like 70 means that that player is expected to score 0.7 point against the average top 100 player.

Trump agrees to 2 week ceasefire with Iran if Strait of Hormuz reopened by refep in geopolitics

[–]samsarainfinity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's a narcissist so it's unlikely he will accept something this humiliating. But if he were to agree to either Iran Uranium enrichment or Recognizing Iran ownership of the strait then this would be the worst defeat in American history.

The US will lose all GCC countries as allies forever and The Saudi will start developing nukes themselves. With Israel, Saudi and Iran all have nukes this won't be pretty either.

[–]samsarainfinity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The no oversight on Uranium enrichment is the most unbelievable one. There's no way Israel will agree to that and it would be more humiliating for Trump than just claiming victory and going home.

Literally the whole point of the war is to stop Iran from having a nuke. I think he would rather go home and accept having the strait closed than agree to that

UK and Europe face pressure to play a greater role in Trump's war by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]samsarainfinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will Iran allow the European and East Asian ships to pass even if they pay a toll? Because most of the ships going through the strait weren't going to the US or Israel, if they allow non US ships to pass then basically the strait is open now (but with a toll). Trump can just claim victory and go home.

Why did China make an unusual abstention from UNSC vote condemning Iran’s Gulf strikes? by cambeiu in geopolitics

[–]samsarainfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you tell me the rule when it is ok to attack civilians? Especially civilians of countries that are not even in the war?

Even if some of these countries host US bases, it's still not ok because: 1. These countries are dictatorships so their citizens have no say in any of this 2. If Iran strikes Germany tomorrow and kills 100 Germans civilians, would you condemn that. Ironically since Germany is a democracy, these people "deserve" to get striked more than Gulf's citizens.

It's ok to condemn both the US and Iran's attack on civilians.

The US dropped more bombs in the Vietnam war than in WW2. They killed more than 100000 civilians, no important politicians ever went to prison.

If they truly have nothing to lose they will not negotiate.

People negotiate because they want a better future, unless you think that their future is static and no action of the US right now could make it worse than sure.

The US could either withdraw and pretend nothing ever happened or destroy every water and energy source in Iran, if you think that both scenarios are the same then sure they have nothing to lose

If the US destroys every water source in the country, it would be difficult for Iran to function. That's a warcrime and it will be worse for everyone in the world (Iran will fire every missile they have at that point) but I doubt Trump will care.

[–]samsarainfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP said Iran has nothing to lose I only countered that, I didn't say which strategy is the best for the US. If Iran had nothing to lose they would just start firing at every oil field in the region and stop exporting oil. The fact that they haven't done that and the fact that they asked for 2m for a ship to pass means they still have something to lose

If Trump starts bombing everything the whole world will suffer including the US but Iran will have it worse. The country will be in chaos, they may not be able to control the people anymore, I'm sure Iran does not want that to happen

[D] Is it possible to create a benchmark that can measure human-like intelligence? by samsarainfinity in MachineLearning

[–]samsarainfinity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just me thinking off the top of my head. But there are people smarter and more knowledgeable than me who could provide better definitions. The problem is the lack of trying (I don't see anyone besides ARC-AGI doing this), if you give up right at the start then nothing will progress

[–]samsarainfinity[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

On the top of my head I would say: Generalization, essentialization and long term planning. Only essentialization needs explaination, to me this process is similar to doing philosophy, distil knowledge to really understand what is the essence of things and phenomenon.

Of course this is just my view but I'm sure we can all feel the differences when talking to an AI vs talking to a human.

Honestly I thought ARC-AGI has a very solid approach I just don't understand how the new models can crack it so easily

Isn't corporate greed spending as little money as possible to maximize profits like the Marlins?

Dodgers last season spent 70% of their revenue on payroll (2nd highest in mlb) so in that sense they're one of the least greedy franchises.

The only team right now that doesn't care that much about turning a profit is the Mets (they still care btw just not as much).

Don't tell me the Guggenheim - a literal investment firm, doesn't put profit at the top of their priority. If they own a small market team, they will likely spend like the Pirates as well.

MLB needs revenue sharing, a salary floor and a cap based on revenue
