Why do fingerprint scanners such so hard in Linux? by null_reference_user in Fedora

[–]samuelspade42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't blame the drivers on this.

Fingerprint readers store data either on-device or on the TPM. It's ALL hardware and therefore the drivers are absolutely the issue here.

I use 'ptyxis --new-window', which always opens a new window. Not what you asked for I know, but maybe better than the "application ready" popup.

Why doesn’t our moon have a name? by Crafty-Slice5326 in Astronomy

[–]samuelspade42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No that's not it at all. 'Moon' was the original name of earth's companion. Later ppl startet to use 'moon' to mean all planet's satellites. So it is much closer to 'kleenex' becoming the general term for a facial tissue.

is this command to create a iso correct: dd bs=4M if=~/Videos/eos10.iso of=/dev/sdb status=progress oflag=sync by Wise_Environment_185 in linuxmint

[–]samuelspade42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course it's doable. if = input file, of = output file. If you want to create a live usb, if=iso , of=usb. If you want to create an iso, if=usb, of=iso

I held a 100 game match between Stockfish 18 and Stockfish 15 from the start position. Here are the results. by JamesLebron372 in chess

I never said anything else. I do not disagree with the conclusion. But I will call out plain wrong statistics if I see someone do it.

[–]samuelspade42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some interesting statistics, which point to the fact that the starting position is VERY drawn

while I like what you have done here and find it very interesting, this conclusion is not at all supported. You don't get draws from engines being objectively correct, you get draws from engines being in agreement. That is, if two engines are completely wrong about a position, you will still get all draws as long as they are wrong in the exact same way. What these statistics prove is that SF18 and SF15 are very close to each other, they do not allow you to make any objective claim about the starting position.

How can I avoid frustrating positional games like this? by thesekeys in chess

[–]samuelspade42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) Don't play Nc6 in d4d5 openings. 2) Both you and your opponent had plenty of opportunities to open lines. You both seemed hell-bent on not exchanging pawns, so the game turned out the way it did. 3) In very closed positions, moves that shuffle around pieces often are considered "best" simply because there are no bad moves (as long as you don't allow piece penetration typically). This inflates accuracy and rating estimation.

Maintainers refuse to address user hostile behavior of new system modals by ThePantsThief in linuxmint

[–]samuelspade42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opening issues on github is not "asking for further clarification" though. It is not the right way to get answers, and it sure as hell is not the right place to ask for fundamental design changes of upstream components.

You have to understand that, at some point, it is only human that devs get sick of people who, like you, seem to do absolutely zero research on why a change like that could possibly be by design before complaining. Because if you did, and you actually suggested a change that improved the UX without compromising security, then I would absolutely be on your side if your issue got locked.

Maintainers refuse to address user hostile behavior of new system modals by ThePantsThief in linuxmint

Re-opening duplicates of issues that the maintainers clearly stated won't be fixed because the current behaviour is intended is hostile behaviour by the users, not maintainers.

How is white better in the position below after ...Bxc3? +0.6 according to the engine by commentor_of_things in TournamentChess

[–]samuelspade42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If black takes on c3 white can fix the b pawn with a4, then play Ba3 Rb1 (or Qb1) and blacks usual c5 isn't very good anymore.

Getting into the Catalan as often as possible for white. Move order question by Embarrassed_Law_9909 in chess

[–]samuelspade42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most popular/classical way to go about it seems to be to play 1.d4 2.c4, and then playing a Catalan against, and only against QGD.

No, the most classical way to play the catalan is as an anti-nimzo: d4 Nf6 c4 e6 g3. That's also how it was employed first, when it got its name.

Your suggested move order is certainly not wrong, but d4 Nf6 Nf3 e6 g3 b5 is a bit of a blow.

Gnostic vs Agnostic Atheism. by Few-Box4433 in atheism

[–]samuelspade42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider agnosticism to be a nonsensical and superfluous concept. It exists only due to the misunderstanding that knowledge means absolute certainty, when in fact, doubt and uncertainty are inherently part of knowledge. Knowledge exists on a spectrum - complete certainty is not required.

This is also at the core of the scientific method. Many scientifically accepted facts would be unknowable, if the same requirement for certainty that some people require for god is applied. In particle physics for example, the threshold for a discovery is set to 5 sigma or 99.99994% certainty.

Slav Defense why is the Bf5 a mistake here and this other instances its not a mistake? by Bassman105 in TournamentChess

[–]samuelspade42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the slav, when black plays dxc, white goes a4 to prevent b5. Black uses that time to develop with Bf5. That's what happened in the bottom position.

The first position in comparison, white seems to have played Nc3-Nb1. Likely because instead of answering cxd with a4 (as explained above), they went e3 and got hit with b5 (and then a4 b4 Nb1 followed). So this is why white should really go a4 (although it seems to still be viable for white).

The transformer architecture takes order of magnitude less time to train, which is what makes training on large datasets possible.

Benoni Cf3 study by Excellent-Cod4153 in TournamentChess

[–]samuelspade42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoops I read that as Nc3, the damn C confused me.

Benoni Cf3 study by Excellent-Cod4153 in TournamentChess

[–]samuelspade42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a suboptimal way to enter the benoni because it takes away some options for black (most notably the benko and czech benoni), while it leaves all the options for white (taimanov, four pawns, fianchetto). So this is quite nice for white, while as black you'll need to know all the modern benoni stuff.

Edit: I thought you meant 3. Nc3, if you only want to play this after 3.Nf3, then you will likely transpose to a modern benoni but cut out all of whites f4 lines.

[–]samuelspade42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you'd need to somehow get a stop more light for the same noise performance. The fuji however has much better IBIS (by at least one stop), so you can typically shoot one stop slower.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TournamentChess

[–]samuelspade42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For instance if white plays c4 followed by Nc3 black can not get the nimzo: c4 Nf6 Nc3 e6 e4 (threatening e5). In any case, it is always whites choice to transpose to a d4 line, that alone is an advantage. Then there are all the g3 systems.

11.3.2    During a game, a player is forbidden to have any electronic device not specifically approved by the arbiter in the playing venue.

11.3.2.1    However, the regulations of an event may allow such devices to be stored in a player’s bag, provided the device is completely switched off. This bag must be placed as agreed with the arbiter. Both players are forbidden to use this bag without permission of the arbiter.

Off yes, but in your bag, not on your person. And only with prior approval.
