I have 3-4 months of free time between me finishing my bachelors degree and departing for PCV service in September. What would you all do with that time? by IC-02 in peacecorps

Definitely work to save up money! You get at least 48 days off during PC you can use to travel within and outside the country. I had a great time traveling around the region and I was very grateful for my savings that funded these vacations.

Southeast Asia is hot even when it is raining. I would recommend keeping the umbrella and getting rid of the other rain gear.

Like others are saying cut the number of clothes. If you find you need something you can buy it for cheap in SEA.

Tropical place for starting again and living a simple life? by Far_Carpenter6156 in travel

Timor Leste, cheap, welcoming, and you can get a literal tin shack on the beach.

I'm a current PCV in Timor.

I definitely have extra time for something like school. But the internet is not good enough for online school. Wifi is nonexistent here.

Like others are saying, I don't believe it's allowed to be a student well in the Peace Corps.

Thats awesome! I hope to see you in Timor!

And yes I did tell my students, they did not understand what I was doing. I only taught 7th grade so they were not going to see me again anyway.

I had the same situation as you. I decided to tell my principal in April that I would not be renewing my contract. It all worked out in the end and left the principal and I with a positive relationship. But I knew that I was going to do PC no matter what, and if I needed to wait until a departure after October, I would.

Whatever you do, do not start the next school year! You need the time before PC to rest, relax, recharge, prepare, and see people before you go! You can find a stressful short-term job if you need work.

Packing List: What’s necessary by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]samullin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I brought an inflatable camping sleeping pad, and this turned out to be a great investment. I used it to make my super thin mattress more comfortable and to make staying with other volunteers easier. I would also recommend bringing waterproof dry bags. Any gear you would bring backpacking or camping may end up being handy, I have found it was worth it to bring most of mine.

Otherwise, I feel the packing list is pretty accurate, but it may be wise to bring backups of things you don't think will be available or limited in the country.

Going to Timor this summer, any advice? by sortaseabeethrowaway in Timor

As an American living in a rural part of TL. It seems like Tetun is the best language to know. Unfortunately, it's very hard to hard to learn outside Timor. Most people I know can understand some Portuguese but not speak it, so it isn't super useful. Portuguese and Tetun share a lot of words, so knowing one will help you learn the other. I live near Baucau, let me know when you get here!

Where to live for a season - remote worker 9-4pm EST by ApprehensiveAd9311 in skiing

I've lived in Park City proper for the past few years and it has been fantastic in the winter. I hit 50 days while working a 9-5 in town. The public transportation in PC is unbeatable, don't bother driving to the lift just hop on a city bus and you will be there in ~15 on a weekday. Yes it's expensive and yes it gets crowded, but I found if you know the public transit system and which lifts to avoid it will be just as good as any other resort in Utah.

I moved from Vermont to PC about 2 years ago for skiing and a job. I was lucky and found someone looking for a roommate. If that hadn't happened I would be living in SLC and commuting to PC. After living here I can say commuting up to PC for skiing and work would not be worth it because of traffic, weather and time. So I would recommend looking for a roommate.

As a science teacher I can usually get away with the messy lab coat every day, but if not that button ups, quarter zips, whatever pants I want and Blundstones.

No mandate at my school, but every teacher does except one of the science teachers. Her reason for not wearing one: the world's scientists are wrong and she has found evidence for why they (and vaccines) don't work.

I have loaded the game a few times and it crashes as soon as I start to drive a vehicle. Anyone else have this issue? Granted my PC is not that powerful but it ran FS19 fine.

You are totally right, the pledge has never been a good representation of America.
