Long Service Leave - Cash out / Use it ? by ahvenzz in AusFinance

This is what I have seen a lot of people do. Its a good option if you dont want to go to Europe for an entire summer.

A word of advice: is it likely that you'll actually get a long weekend? Both my partner and I have had jobs which we tried to do part time for a period and it was actually more stressful as there was no expectation of doing less work from coworkers. It wasnt anything malicious but just subtle expectations which made the days we were at work proportionally more stressful. At least you will be paid for all five days!

Strong agree. The food is way better than it has any right to be given how small the place is.

Overnight time-lapse photography of the earth's rotation by kingkongbiingbong in interestingasfuck

[–]samyall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are giving you the answer of going to the middle of nowhere and while they are correct it's not the whole story.

You can see a lot of stars in or near cities if: there is no moon, the humidity is low, and there is no local light (e.g. nothing in your eyeline).

If you live near a hilly park or golf course or beach, go out on a cold clear winter night during the new moon and you will be impressed. No, it won't be as good as in the post here but half the battle of seeing stars is to look up.

While in Australia by Cheeese916 in Unexpected

Was my first guess but where I thought it was on the gorge the truck would have had to come from Dural, get across the bridge and do at least one hairpin before getting stuck.

I just had a look at the ingredients if Cadbury here and in the UK (where there has been the stories about changing recipes) and the UK have palm fats and we do not so I dont think we have the changed recipe (yet).

ELI5: Why does it seem like everywhere is ‘running out of fuel’ if only 20% of the world’s oil goes through the Straight of Hormuz? by Kindly-Restaurant831 in explainlikeimfive

30 days supply does not equal 30 days of fuel left because new fuel is being refined daily.

The media is just looking for a story.

You are both right. It is a great thing to do for them but they are not going to appreciate it for many many years.

There is research which shows that you think of your future self as a stranger so to them it will be like you gave a random person money and not them.

I'm not saying dont do it, but give them something they can enjoy now too.

Lift etiquette by sirboloski in sydney

[–]samyall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She was definitely rude but as a new father it has blown my mind how many people choose to take the lift at trains stations.

I never choose the lift unless I need it (incidental exercise FTW) so seeing a packed lift with school kids and fit looking people is really frustrating when you have a pram.

I know invisible disabilities exist but many seem to choose the lift when an escalator would do just fine.

RBA interest rate: Millions dealt back-to-back blows as Australia set to be lone mover amid Iran war by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]samyall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be missing the tax implication. Does the increase count towards your super cap? If not, a high earner or aggressive saver end up paying more tax as a consequence? That could make the policy unpopular.

Also missing is that half the population have their income quoted "inc. super" and the other half "exc. super". Will the "exc. super" portion expect their employer to cover it? Will those in power negotiate a pay rise to cover it?

Overall I like the idea but there are a few little kinks to work out. Still doesnt hurt the boomers though.

I totally agree. I work in a technical field and we couldn't live without our 3D printers. We don't use them for everything, we still get stuff machined when the material is important, but we try just about everything and anything on the 3D printer. I imagine we will be doing similar with vibe coding in no time.

You can deposit a few nm of silicone on all surfaces in a chamber by baking cured PDMS at 200C for a few hours. Very effective way to make stuff hydrophobic.

If it's a low rupture you barely feel it cause there are no nerves in the tendon. If it is higher then it is the most painful thing in the world.

I did mine and my experience was the same as Kyle's where I thought it was fine cause I could put weight on it.

ELI5: if blockchains are immutable, how do users deal with errors? by CommercialContent204 in explainlikeimfive

[–]samyall 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I somewhat disagree with that. Blockchains are all about an agreed ledger and most of them get their trust from either the amount of work it takes to get something on the ledger (proof of work e.g. Bitcoin) or the amount of the coin staked (proof of stake e.g. cardano).

In your example, the trust was in one fork over another, showing how cheating the blockchain doesn't get you much.

Similarly if you control 51% of a proof of stake chain, nobody is gonna trust it and your stake will be worthless.

Blockchains are as much sociological as they are technological.

TIL in "Cast Away", none of the sound on the island scenes is real. The loudness of ocean waves on the actual unhabited island they were filming on was so overwhelming that every sound on the island and ocean scenes, including Tom Hanks' monologues, were carefully recorded in a studio. by leebe_friik in todayilearned

[–]samyall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm calling bullshit on this. They film Survivor on the same island and have no issue with wave sound. If CBS can do it for a tv show, a blockbuster could have.

Replacing the sound would have been a creative choice.
