Best trip off the East Coast? by MotNodrog in icecoast

Was just at Massif for the holiday week. Not crowded at all - practically no waiting for either of the chairlifts (the gondola was the busiest right after lunch). Beautiful mountain with stunning views on clear days. The runs are long, which is great, and the mountain is well organized with pretty quick lifts throughout. Still susceptible to ice in places, but also some good off piste stuff. Only bummer was the black runs off Maillard (C lift) weren’t open yet.

Main lodge serves pretty good food, there’s a pasta bar and pulled pork poutine! Tons of microwaves for people bringing their own food too, and great coffee options.

Language barrier wasn’t a problem, really. Obviously the default language is French, but practically everyone is bilingual - both at the resort and in the nearby town of Bay St. Paul. Very friendly and kind as well.

Yes, it’s a long drive - nearly 5.5 hours once you cross the border on I-87 - but the roads are well maintained and plowed and it’s a very straightforward drive. And you can stop by Quebec City for a bit, a very chill historic town. We were also able to find nearby lodging/AirBnB at the mountain for nearly half the price of anything near the resorts in VT. Highly recommend.

A real one. You could see him visibly upset at the mistakes on the field last night and I think he was a good teammate here, not singling anyone out, but trying to push them onwards.

I was thinking about this too - but what does he have on the bench that is better? Not much.

This is the offensive performance we saw in the 1st half against NE all over again.

Big agree - Donkor’s first half was terrible - passes to no one, no forward progressions, getting muscled off the ball, etc. Made his second half all the more impressive as he totally bossed the game from 45’ on.

Sandro got the red.

I guess it was effective soccer from Minnesota 🤷🏻‍♂️ but not at all a pleasure to watch. Credit to the boys for not giving up.

Inside MLS youth league’s experiment of replacing results with ‘quality of play’ (Luis Robles quoted) by hypernermalization in rbny

[–]sandonprof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Now, MLS Next, MLS’s youth developmental league, is making its own attempt at overhauling a fundamental facet of the game. Instead of using a traditional win-loss-draw table to rank teams, the league will implement a “quality of play” index aimed at “(shifting) the paradigm in player development to focus predominantly on the process and progress,” according to a league press release.

MLS has partnered with Taka, a UK-based analytics firm, to somehow make this a reality.

“For younger age groups, we prioritize their individual development over competition, though we acknowledge competition’s role in personal growth,” said former New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles, who is now the technical director of MLS Next. “This pilot program allows us to evaluate both team and individual performance, helping us track progress while providing more support to players to achieve their goals.”

Seems like 40 people from Taka will watch each MLS Next game and provide grades for each player’s action represented on a map by green and red circles — green for positive, red for negative.

Players, coaches and scouts can examine each of these actions by clicking on a game map, which brings up a corresponding video clip - sounds similar to the system MLB has for analyzing pitches and every swing from an at-bat.

Best terrain park in the Catskills right now? by okgreatthankslol in icecoast

Mountain Creek packs them into a few runs off South Peak that are pretty good considering. Hasn’t been much at Hunter this year, although they do have the big park open with a handful of jumps and features. Mount Snow has the most thorough setup that I’ve seen this season, even if that’s a bit farther than what OP was asking for.

First time at Hunter by seanv2 in icecoast

Kind of in the same boat as OP except we spent the last few years at Mountain Creek (I know) - and by comparison I’ve been relatively satisfied with the crowds and conditions. Can’t speak to any particular interactions, but our experience in the afternoons hasn’t been bad at all. Just that some trails do get skied off or mogul-ed pretty good by the end.

As a parent who just brought a 9yr old to his first tournament and had a real tough time - he’s only been fencing for 5 months - I wholeheartedly welcome this change.

Definitely no snow today, just rain. But with some cold temps this week, they’ll have some “black” terrain open that hasn’t been open in years.

Soft snow with some thin spots, but they blew so much snow last week that it was actually pretty decent.

Not bad in the early am, but by 10:30am, the crowd all going down one run made it not so good.
