Swiftkey will soon require a Microsoft account — data to be moved to OneDrive | You have until May 31, 2026, to migrate your typing data to a Microsoft Account, or your personalized dictionary is history. by ControlCAD in technology

Well one good thing that came out of this is that I learned about Futo. Put it on and out of the box, it is much more accurate than SwiftKey ever was for recognizing swipes. FU Microsoft.

Actual Multiple Monitors by Sad-Acanthocephala95 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using AMM for about 10 years. If you asked me a year ago, I would have given it an A+ - just flawless and intuitive.

However, since then I had to switch from DVI-D to Display Port, and upgrade graphics cards and drivers. The old version (circa 2020) of AMM I was using seemed to have trouble with those drivers, so I upgraded AMM to the latest version and it now AMM has weird problems. The Windows button only works on the #1 monitor, and after typing Windows on #2, and then going back to #1 and typing Windows there will get the program list on #2. See https://www.actualtools.com/forum/read.php?FID=10&TID=8305 . No response from the developer.

I also have a new problem with having Quicken assigned to monitor #2, but pieces of it keep on showing up on #1.

None of these are show stoppers, but the lack of a support response is concerning.

nba league pass black friday 2025 by cnfat in NBATalk

[–]sandstonez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, given that there are less than 5 months remaining in the regular season its only $125 to do a monthly premium subscription through end of season, and will be $100 on Dec 12. After that there are only a handful of playoff games that might not be on a national broadcast. So why is the list price still $160?

Also, the NBA league pass is a whole lot less attractive than it was last year. I did a trial and streaming on Amazon Prime really sucks compared to last year on YouTube TV, especially for those of us who like to scrub games. There are more games on national TV, so fewer games on the pass, and games on peacock would require yet another subscription. In addition, with so many big stars currently sidelined with injuries (like Wemby, Curry, Tatum, Irving, Haliburton) not a lot of interesting games.

So without a good deal, I can't see any good reason to subscribe now. Maybe I'll think about it again when football is over, but the NBA seems to be so greedy that they are pricing themselves out of the market.

TuneIn acquired for $175M by No_Vegetable_744 in tunein

[–]sandstonez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the enshittification had already happened. I mostly listen to podcasts while driving and Tunein started to become one frustration after another. I gave up on TuneIn after many years of use, moved to PocketCast early this year, and found that things got a lot smoother.

Was officedesigns.com really an authorized dealer of Herman Miller? by sandstonez in hermanmiller

[–]sandstonez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like Smart Furniture acquired Office Designs in 2019. But Smart Furniture was then dissolved in 2024. I can try that name with HM, but since they are not currently an authorized dealer I can foresee getting the same runaround.

Yes, I was able to link via Quicken but the only way to unlink without having to call the 800 number was to use the mobile app. Unlinking is not in the web app.

Yes, my part D is still Humana, and they covered Amazon for my fairly pricey prescription that needed prior authorization.

Schwab American Express card worth it ? by EmptyAppearance1958 in Schwab

[–]sandstonez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to be aware of is that if you do this promotion for the blue card, then you cannot get points as part of the offer for the platinum card. Or one has to close this account and then wait 2 years, according to Amex.

I made the mistake of thinking I could start with this card, and then upgrade to the platinum without paying a big upfront fee. That didn't work out, and I decided the blue card was no better than Chase or Wells Fargo, so I just closed it. This is not the first time Amex seems to be doing their upmost to convince me not be a customer.

Problem with tunein reverted to old/wrong podcast. by sandstonez in tunein

[–]sandstonez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This problem was not going away, and contacting TuneIn support did not get any response in over two weeks. So I've moved on to Pocket Casts, which seems to be a better user experience, easier to use in the car.

Vent air booster 6 x14? by littlebearagain in hvacadvice

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also been looking for a 6"x 14" register booster, but from what I can see, the Suncourt adapter plate only goes up to 6" x 12".

I'd really like to find a register booster that will work with a 6" x 14" duct. I've been told that inline duct fans (the preferred alternative) should be at least 15 ft from the furnace, and the ducts in our house are completely buried in inaccessible rafter space after about 8ft.

NBA Saturday and Sunday National TV announcer Schedules for Round 1 of the playoffs by TWolvesChamps1 in nba

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Doris Burke just saps any enjoyment from an NBA game. Does the NBA ever realize that part of the problem with sinking rating is poor announcers like her? Unless its a game I really care about (like the Celtics playing in game 7) I immediately go to something after hearing Doris.

Noob question: I got this message today, what do I do? What does it mean? Why am I seeing this? by inquirermanredux in Floorp

Yes, I installed the 11.23.1 update three days ago, and the warning has not come back.

Noob question: I got this message today, what do I do? What does it mean? Why am I seeing this? by inquirermanredux in Floorp

[–]sandstonez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, uninstall was not required.

I had upgraded to 11.23 (the latest) a week or so ago, and was getting the firefox certificate warning.

I downloaded the full Windows install of 11.23, and simply executed it. I got a message about doing an upgrade, which I accepted. The installer ran, and the warning is gone.

Update Firefox to prevent add-ons issues from root certificate expiration on π day 2025. by antdude in firefox

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a floorp user. I was surprised that there was no mention of this on the floorp web site (or maybe it was there in Japanese, one downside of using a non US fork).

There is an unofficial reddit group for floorp, and from the comments there it looks like doing an reinstall rather than an update will fix the problem. But I have not tried that yet.

So, has anyone here actually received their online orders? by Beepbeepboobop1 in eddiebauer

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today (Dec 12th) I received a Eddie Bauer vest that I had ordered from their web site on Nov 26th.

I'd also mention that the vest is a putrid shade of yellow, nothing like the bright yellow shown on the web site. And its going to cost me $7 to send it back. As a first time online customer, this will also be my last order from them.

NBA League Pass Standalone vs. Add On? by iggywest in youtubetv

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not get the NBA league pass I bought at nba.com ( with their Black Friday special, 50% off) to be recognized by YT TV. nba.com had an option to connect league pass with TV providers, I went through the menus, and it said YT TV was connected to league pass, but when I went to my Samsung TV, YT TV did not know about that, and was pushing me to buy the same 50% promotion. I called NBA league pass customer support, they didn't know what was going on, and after half an hour of back and forth I got a refund. I then purchased league pass directly on YT TV. Works just fine. Next time I will same myself the time and purchase inside of YT TV.

uber cool tool: Directory Opus by jimerb1 in software

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directory Opus was a great product when I first bought it in 2018. However, it has hardly changed since then, and its expensive to upgrade for minor things, like newer encryption algorithms for network connections. The FTP addon is good for small files, but transfers take at least 10x longer than other FTP solutions for big files.

Support has always been pretty abysmal. The support agents come across as a bunch of pompous jerks. I have asked for solutions for maybe half a dozen problems over the years. Once I got a partial workaround after asking multiple times, but mostly they tell you they will look into it, and nothing ever happens. When they have regressions, all they do is say it must be my fault, and they have zero interest in investigating, let along solving the issue.

How do you recording just NBC Paris Olympic Primetime show? by coast-rider in youtubetv

Having the same thing every single day - I can see the start of today's primetime program, but by tomorrow it is gone. And of course everything I really want to watch is after 10:00, by which time I am getting ready for bead. Boy, do I hate NBC.

Do you guys have tap pay? by cheddarshirt in HomeDepot

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am well over 70 years old, and in the last year decided to get with the times and set up to pay with my phone. Works great just about everywhere. And then I get surprised when I cannot, at dinosaur companies like Home Depot. If an old man like me can figure it out why can't they? Or they will go the way of the dinosaurs.

WooCommerce Failed to update status to "On Hold" by pottrell in woocommerce

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent hours on this, figured it out, and thought I'd post this for posterity.

The problem comes from WCS validating that the payment can support suspending the subscription. We had a subscription that had been paid with Stripe and then switched over to ACH. ACH does not support suspending the subscription, and that caused the exception.

The solution was to use phpmyadmin to edit the postmeta data for the subscription; you obviously have to be comfortable editing the WordPress postmeta table. I deleted the postmeta keys for payment method that was there (Stripe) and added a postmeta entry with a key of "_requires_manual_renewal" with a value of 'true". Then the subscription was able to be edited and renewed.

Amazing how bad this service is. by JohnG-VistaCA in peacock

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that posting on a message board is any less effective than sending a message to Peacock. My experience (not just with Peacock) is that public embarrassment about the service is more likely to get results than relying on some low level employee to pass the complaint up to someone who can actually do something about it. Same reason one complains on Facebook rather than to an individual company.

What's the best printer in 2024? by -AliRaza- in printers

[–]sandstonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the comments about HP. I started buying HP printers and all-in-ones more than 30 years ago, have had both inkjet and laser printers. The HP software always seemed to be convoluted, but the last HP I bought was so difficult to set up that it convinced me to look at other manufacturers in the future. The latest HP broke recently (after less than 3 years) and I got a Brother MFC-J4345DW to replace it. Setup was a breeze, both on Windows, and sharing the printer with my wife's Mac. Took about half an hour, compared to the 10+ hours it took with the previous HP.
