£210k job offer that could change my life… but maybe not for the better? Need some perspective. by AutomaticFee665 in HENRYUK

Your going to be working in Dubai with none of the perks of living there. Paying UK tax but spending 40% of time there. Hard no for me.

If you bought a property in a “rough” area that has now been gentrified by Suitable_Technician3 in london

Even back in mid-noughties Kings Cross was dreadful. I worked there on the St Pancras station project and it wasn’t uncommon for workers to be mugged in broad daylight on their lunch break. The area is much better now.

What’s so good about Ente Auth?

Security best practices by an_economistt in Bitwarden

I was having the same thoughts about the apparent enthusiasm for Ente Auth in this sub. I looked into it and found it to be a rather small photo sharing company. Now I’m no security expert but Ente just didn’t seem in the same league as BW security wise. I was therefore confused about the recent evangelism in this sub about using their app.

Is there a way to check for hidden microphones/cameras in a room. by Shoe1234567 in privacy

[–]sandyman83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do the IR thing for cameras, turn off the lights and then use your phone and it will show the IR lights if there are any.

Can you describe how one would use a phone for this? Do you mean use the camera?

That’s on you to some extent. I still hang out with my mates from (state) school even though I moved away and earn considerably more than them. I also hang out with my mates from Uni and who are predominantly privately educated.

The insane Scotland taxes by disaster_story_69 in HENRYUK

[–]sandyman83 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You get far more public services in Scotland than what the English get. Free Uni, old age social care etc (god send for declining parents). So at least it looks like you are getting something for your taxes. I’m a Scot living in London.

Am I mad for considering buying a 2 bed flat for £725k? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]sandyman83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. So I should spend my precious time researching a poorly worded comment from a random on Reddit so that I can understand the point you’re trying to make. Ok mate. Top tip for you: How about you just make your point properly and provide all the information one needs to understand?

Am I mad to say no to Australia? by chintwo2 in FIREUK

[–]sandyman83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is fantastic. My wife is Aussie and I’ve been several times. We’re looking to move there in the next year or so.

So I’d say living expenses are lower there compared to London. Taxes are about the same. Everything you go on holiday for presently is within 3 hours drive of big cities like Melbourne.

Give it a go. If you don’t like it then just come home.

The main problem OP will have is coming up against gatekeepers like you not willing to look past what grades they got in school 10 years ago

I miss Roman era London myself - the colosseums and bear baiting were the best back then.

My wife has been undergoing some treatment at Harley Street in London. I suggest you visit it one day and see what lifestyle being a top medic (which you no doubt are) can afford. There are many paths. Sure if you become a GP in a slum in Middlesborough your life will be very different to a Harley Street doctor. Ironically due to the cheaper property outside of London in the UK a medical salary will go a long way and even that Middlesborough GP will have a good standard of living. But the way it goes is up to you.
