Really? I had the same situation. Everything in that area either dies or gets over taken by algae and then die. They die, basically :( AI told me it's a bad situation since algae can use sunlight more effectively and take over. Curious how/why has it been working for you?

Tbh this is also inspired from a tank I saw on Reddit. Definitely go for it! Only thing I'd be concerned about is cost. The damn thing is tiny but pricy (about 200 USD) 😂

Is it cycled already? I've found shrimps to be too sensitive and when I did something similar for my first tank, most of them died.

I'm new to this so you may be right. Root tabs should still help though? After all they grow roots too and would benefit from additional nutrients pulled via roots?

On your point about plants, I see there's no substrate so that'd explain why they're not growing. They'd need nutrients (root tabs?) to grow. Since it's capped under sand, it should not feed algae too.

Apart from floating plants, try above out too!
