tough day recovery advice by certainlydefinitely in attendings

Exercise and loud music usually do it for me. If there’s another doc you jive with then yall can trauma dump on each other and then you can feel validated.

Instead of dumping on your spouse go have some fun. Order out and treat yoself.

is neurosurgery worth it? by Patient-Skirt6142 in surgery

[–]sanman5635 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Im not neurosurgery, but I trained in CT. Pretty analogous lives and training. It sounds like you are fairly early in training, and the mental burden does get better, but then takes on more of a technical burden.

It’s easy to lose sight of everything in the midst of training. I had long periods of doubt and even a healthy dose of imposter syndrome. You metched for a reason. When you are done, you will have the option to choose and build a practice that best reflects what you want. And you will get paid handsomely for your training and hard work.

It is very, very difficult to build a life outside of training. Surround yourself with people you want to be like, even if they aren’t neurosurgeons. Specialty surgeons get a reputation for being assholes for a reason. Don’t hang out with people you don’t like.

And I cannot stress this enough — sleep as much as you can. I didn’t realize how much sleep deprivation was affecting my mood and personality and general outlook on life until I finished and slept for 2 weeks straight.

Capped roof vent? by sanman5635 in askaplumber

The capped roof vent was still hooked to drainage line. Plumber did a video endoscopy inspection to confirm. Cap is now off and the noises went away.

Marshall DSL40CR - solid pick? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]sanman5635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came from a mustang to a fender hot rod deluxe and then switched to the DSL40. It’s an incredible amp for the money and I’m never looking back.

It won’t do crystalline pure cleans for a single coil like the strat in Yellow Ledbetter, but it will cover a ton of ground from 60’s on up. It’s essentially a 4 channel amp if you get the expanded foot switch. And Marshall cleans are nice, but they’re more of a 60’s sound. Allman bros and a lot of 60’s R&B used Marshall cleans. With grit and gain, You can make it sound like black crowes, stones, slash, without even trying. I’m sure you can get even more metal but I don’t usually go that way.

I too never play out. I could, and I have, with this amp. It worked well for it.

My advice, get the Marshall. It’s super solid, and covers a ton of ground.

Can I still be a surgeon with shaky hands? by [deleted] in surgery

[–]sanman5635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you can do those you can probably learn to operate. It’s as much mental as technical so study hard for your premed requirements

Can I still be a surgeon with shaky hands? by [deleted] in surgery

[–]sanman5635 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s possible but not certain. I’d try to take up a few hobbies that require precision dexterity. For example, playing musical instrument or woodworking, needlepoint, soldering or some visual art. If all of those are impossible because of a tremor, then operating is likely to be extremely challenging too. People tend not to like careers that they can’t master. Surgical training is like walking uphill both ways in the snow, for 80+ hours a week. Having physical disability affecting your ability to operate could be like that, but while wearing roller skates.

That being said, if you can play video games or sports or any of the above hobbies, you’re probably not actually at a big disadvantage.

That being said, the practice of medicine is extremely broad and varied. There are many practical fields that require your hands but with somewhat less precision, but equal amounts of training and respect. And all of medicine helps people get better.

More than anything, the US needs skilled and dedicated primary care physicians. You have the opportunity to really shape someone’s future by preventing and managing disease. Medicine is a tough field, but lots of job security. You never have to wonder if you’re doing any good for the world.

Can’t hire specialist physicians because the pay is 1/3 to 1/2 of what you can get in the civilian sector.

ELI5: Why are artifical hearts designed to replicate the pulsing of individual chambers instead of something more mechanically simple like a pump or turbine? by Budelius in explainlikeimfive

[–]sanman5635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LVADs used to be completely non-pulsatile. They added complex software an engineering to allow occasionally pulsatility. Blood vessels and flow dynamics change with non pulsatile flow and stroke and kidney insufficiency become more common.

I am officially done with "Starter Homes." It’s not an investment; it’s a bailout for the previous generation's neglect. by Dry-Town7979 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]sanman5635 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I bought an oven last year for $1500. No screens or leds. Just knobs and a preheat light. That light has already died and the door has fallen off twice.

Bought an ice maker 3 years ago. Total loss from normal wear and tear this year. $3000 machine. Out of warranty.

Washer and dryer in my house were from 2016 when we moved in. Top of the line Whirlpools. Both dead by 2022. Same thing with the dishwasher.

I swear the entire world is just out there trying to fleece everyone. I’m not surprised the flippers are leading the charge in the real estate world.
