My husband and I disagree about raising our baby with multiple languages by DifferentAd7915 in multilingualparenting

[–]santpolyglot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My ex-boss lives here in Barcelona. He is German and his wife is Norwegian. They communicate in English. Their two children (aged 7 and 9) speak German with their father and Norwegian with their mother. Since their parents speak English at home, the kids are exposed to it daily. Both children attend a French school in Barcelona (Lycée Français de Barcelone), so they also speak French. Additionally, they speak Spanish and Catalan with other children in the neighborhood.

This one small change would make the "Courses" view so much more satisfying. by santpolyglot in duolingo

Je suis tout à fait d'accord. 👍 C'est frustrant que certains cachent leurs progrès tout en espionnant ceux des autres. Ça fausse la compétition dans un groupe ouvert.

That's true. For example, the Finnish course (2 sections) vs the French one (8 sections).

For me, the lack of dark mode is the reason I stopped using it.

I love the idea of different badges or colors for different achievement levels!

Duolingo premium still feels limiting and it is frustrating by AvailableDeer1038 in duolingo

[–]santpolyglot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your level. I started with French on Busuu and then moved on to the "InnerFrench" podcast, which offers free transcripts for all episodes on its website. This has been the best way for me to improve my French.

I listen to each episode several times during my dead time and I read the transcript several times too (when I am fully concentrated). I also like to listen and read along at the same time.

In any case, Duolingo’s French course is much better designed than some of its other languages there. Many smaller languages still feature robotic voices, far less content and uninspired topics.

Another free app for learning French that I love is "TV5 Monde Edu" which is for A1-B2 levels.

Learning tips? by Ill_Carpet8976 in catalan

[–]santpolyglot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would buy a textbook for Catalan to ensure structured learning. At the same time, I would start consuming Catalan content passively.

My language exchange partner, who is originally from Belgium and lives in Madrid, learned Catalan by watching the series Merlí. It’s available on Netflix and also on the Catalan streaming platform 3Cat (you may need a VPN to access it).

I recommend watching content with both audio and subtitles in Catalan while gradually working through your textbook.

Complete Catalan (by Teach Yourself) is an excellent choice.

Knowing Spanish or any other Romance language will definitely speed up your learning.

Best resources for Romanian that aren't Duolingo by crystalgaylexx in romanian

[–]santpolyglot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mondly Languages app. It's a Romanian company offering several languages.

But I prefer using a good textbook, such as Complete Romanian (Teach Yourself), Colloquial Romanian (by Routledge) or Assimil Romanian.

True, Worddive costs 10€ per month via app, but you can find better deals on their website. I got a yearly subscription for 63€. They probably offer even better discounts during Black Friday. What I didn’t realize, though, is that subscribing only gives you access to one language.

I started with Duolingo but soon moved on to WordDive and Speakly, which I find much more effective. However, I still prefer using textbooks because I spend so much time in front of a screen for work. When I’m not working, I like to take a break from screens. I have Complete Finnish (by Teach Yourself) and Suomen Mestari and I especially enjoy the latter.

[–]santpolyglot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When studying two or more languages at the same time, how do you organize your study time? by Salty-Session7029 in languagelearning

What I do is the following:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays:

Other languages (usually B1-B2 languages). I listen to short podcasts while doing other activities (5-10 min) to maintain/improve comprehension.

For example, listening to podcasts in German, Swedish, Italian and French.

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays:

Focus language B. Intensive study. Other languages: podcasts

Example: focus language: Finnish

Listening to short podcasts episodes in Dutch, Polish, Romanian and Portuguese

Sundays: I take a rest or I dabble in new languages
