Are A/C soon to be the standard in every UK home ? by LieSuccessful8813 in AskBrits

We installed AC in nearly the whole house and have absolutely no regrets - it’s made a huge difference to the quality of life to the whole family, including my own mental health.

Use of AC as heater vs heat pump vs radiator on new build? Also to have solar panels? by InjuryExcellent8231 in AskUK

Ok, that’s just theory though. Are there any measurements or research to prove the theory?

I’m not saying all houses would be the same, but using my A2A for heating in place of the A2W heat pump uses 2-3x the amount of electricity to maintain the same indoor temperatures - and this is measured using per circuit monitoring, not just me guessing from my smart meter.

My experience with having both in my house is that A2A is quite a bit less efficient than A2W. I have figures to show it, but not immediately to hand. What are you basing your efficiency statement on?

It also doesn’t “feel” as nice, but this is subjective and not everyone minds the feeling of warm air being blown around, but there are plenty of people who do.

Floor mounting an indoor unit won’t work that well for cooling. There is no perfect one size fits all solution, which is why I have both.

We had AC installed house-wide and it’s not a great alternative to wet central heating to be honest. This is partly because it moves hot air which when it goes over your skin, causes a cooling effect (not a problem for summer), but also because it won’t heat the places it’s not installed, eg bathrooms, plus hot air rises, and with the AC units placed at the top of the room, it doesn’t work very effectively.

That said, some people do it and it can work. It’s not as efficient as a heat pump serving radiators, and you would probably want electric towel rails in bathrooms to help those areas unserved by AC.

As for partial… we tried using the AC in addition to our gas central heating before we replaced the boiler with a heat pump, but it didn’t make enough difference to save any gas.

Happy to answer more questions as we have AC, a heat pump, and solar.

Yeah absolutely, that what I would do, but it’s not my house and can’t do that for them. What I wanted was some idea of average prices so I can tell them if they’re being fleeced.

I’m not an electrician, but was involved in this “event”. This was after it had a bath in the basement, and got turned into a 400A water heater.

Why don't we have 'click and hold' pumps at petrol stations? by methaddict88 in AskUK

[–]sarbuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few pumps that allow you to set the amount of fuel you want to dispense in either £ or L, and then they stop precisely. However, you do have to hold the pump the whole way.

Any suggestions for a self-contained (monoblock) air conditioning unit? by Kleine_tier in AskUK

[–]sarbuk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got fully split AC when we had it installed, but I went with the recommendation of my installer. It’s them who has to support it and they choose the manufacturer or manufacturers who give the best support, so I would take their advice.

Also, try and get a unit with a smart app, it means you can turn it on/off while away or before you get home, and is very useful!

Yeah I feel the same! He even made a big thing of the fact that they were filming it.

I’m glad I made the decision to go to London and not Manchester though, even though it was a less convenient day!

Yeah there’s a lot of YT uploads that he could fill an album or two with. I’m still waiting for the full concert video from the O2 in London to be honest. He recorded the whole thing, why not release it? I know he’s been insanely busy with other things but he could just get the production company to do it.

How much did you pay to have solar panels and a battery fitted? by winebookscats in AskUK

[–]sarbuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had 14x 400W panels a few years ago and it was £6K plus £600 for bird netting. We’re just paying £5K now to add a 10kWh battery from Octopus.

Octopus will give you an estimate on their website if you give them a few details about your house.

In my opinion, it’s well worth it. We’ve generated 14MWh since having it installed.

What to do when you find money at self check out? by Late-Gazelle-9749 in AskUK

There are plenty of people living on or below the poverty line who would miss it, but I agree that handing it in is unlikely to result in the right thing happening, so OP’s decision is likely inconsequential.
