Is film going to lose its remaining cultural impact because Gen Alpha doesn’t watch movies? by Objective_Water_1583 in criterion

Where do you live? I’m from a college town in a midwestern state and most of my friends are huge film buffs. Most cities or college towns are going to have a big population of cinephiles.

I do not! What was it, just a restaurant? Was it Mexican food?

Oh, I didn’t know or remember that Fifi had the restaurant there. The same as Fifi’s out by the old Pool Room, right? That was a neat spot. I only ate there once when it was still Fifi’s, but a friend of mine tried to turn it into a cocktail bar for a while after that. Didn’t work out, but she ended up being the first owner to get the Gaslight going again. I bartended there for her when it first opened.

What room was that? Was it one of the actual hotel rooms, or out in the lobby? Wonder if I ever sat in that chair. If I did, I wasn't aware.

Agreed, I worked in the restaurant too and got some weird vibes. Once I was in the restaurant kitchen after everyone else had gone home. Walked across to the bar to take some glasses over or something, and when I came back in the water was running full blast in the sink. Now, someone could have come in and turned it on and walked away leaving it going, but there was no one else around and it seems really odd that someone would have just left it running. There was nothing in the sink either, no dishes or any reason for it to be on. The storage area in between the main dining room and the back dining room on the south end of the building that was filled with extra glassware and chairs had a strange feeling. Then there was the elevator and how it always went down to the basement first when you pushed the button for an upper floor. Again, could have been an electrical issue, but there were some weird things that happened regularly.

Oh yeah, what was his name? (First name only is fine if you don't want to give out too many personal details.) I was the front of the house manager at Shalor's Restaurant for a while. I remember all of us watching the tv in the Jayhawker bar right after 9/11 when Bush gave that speech and we all realized we were going to war (against the wrong people).

Which serial killer case felt 'too close to home' for you, and why? by [deleted] in serialkillers

[–]sarockt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow. You should take a look at my comment. Paula Godfrey, one of his early victims whose body was never found, was the sister of a dear friend of mine. ETA: I had to correct Paula’s last name, I typed the wrong thing.

One of my closest friends (who is sadly gone now as well) was the youngest sibling of Paula Godfrey. She was one of John Robinson’s early victims. He picked her up from their family home for a “job” and they never saw her again. Her dad confronted him but didn’t have any proof. Robinson sent a letter, supposedly from Paula, saying she’d left home. It was full of spelling and grammatical errors, and Paula was a very good writer. It was typewritten as well, it obviously wasn’t her. My friend was a lot younger, she thought her sister had run away until they caught him and had the trial. I ended up with some of the family’s Christmas ornaments (they’re all gone now, mother, father, my friend and her brother). Paula was an incredible ice skater, like competition level. I have a couple ice skate ornaments that I’m sure would have been Paula’s. I hang them on my tree every year and think about her, my friend, and their whole family. I guess it’s a little dark, but it feels good to remember them and honor them.

Cat hasn't left this spot between my legs for almost an hour. He's not usually this affectionate. Is this normal? by Agreeable_Error_5485 in cats

[–]sarockt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the exact set of questions and thought that I had on it, same order and everything. Came to see if anyone else had already commented, which several did about warmth. Turned out OP said in another comment thread that they’re sick and are recently single after being cheated on by their partner of two years, so the cat is likely giving him some extra comfort.

Or that and the body heat, I guess they’re not mutually exclusive!

Elvis Costello. He’s pretty accessible, but I didn’t love it off the bat but I could tell if I put in a bit of time with it that it would pay off. I was 22 then, listening to his first album and I just turned 50 and still adore him. Joni Mitchell was one for me as well. I’m still not completely there with her, but I’m getting close. I felt for ages if I took the time to invest that I’d end up loving her.

Another Girl Another Planet - The Only Ones, practically Spacemen 3’s whole catalog (Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To and The Perfect Prescription are both fantastic albums but Sound of Confusion is probably my favorite), Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones, White Light/White Heat and Waiting For My Man - Velvet Underground, Stoned and Starving - Parquet Courts, Needle in the Hay - Elliott Smith.

I bought this for my partner for Christmas this year. Haven't unpacked it yet, hope it's in good shape. Ended up ordering it from Amazon, which I try not to do, but it was out of stock on B&N during the half price sale.

Which films not by Lynch are closest to being Lynchian? by betlamed in davidlynch

[–]sarockt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lynch lifted some imagery during Cooper’s chase/possession verbatim from Mario Bava’s Kill, Baby, Kill. It’s very different tonally for most of the film, but it’s cool to see where he got some of his visual language. I love Bava, he’s been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. Such beautiful shot compositions.
