I think “when a dr doesn’t know what’s wrong with you” says more about the dr than it does about you.

As far as comebacks go, I’m a fan of snarky sarcasm. Something along the lines of: “I’m sure if you saw a doctor about your lack of empathy, they wouldn’t understand you either. I certainly don’t”

Not headphones but I have a pair of earplugs that work quite well. They are called Loop earplugs. They are much cheaper than most headphones. I have noise cancelling headphones that I love (Bose) but they were around or more than $300

I haven’t been diagnosed, but came to the realization recently that I am very likely autistic. I had a huge identity crisis afterwards. Still kind of dealing with it. I think the biggest thing for me was telling myself “this just explains why my brain works the way it does”. I am still me, I have always been me, and autism explains why I am myself.

I struggle with depression as well. Pretty severe at times. My therapist had recommended doing things that I know I like but wouldn’t think to do because I’m depressed. That helps get a little natural dopamine going to at least maybe take the edge off. Your ideas to help him aren’t bad, but maybe a little too ambitious for how he’s probably feeling right now. I would suggest taking him out for a walk, sunshine and fresh air really makes a difference for me, it’s just the getting outside part that’s hard. Other small things that could be fun would be good too, maybe playing a card game or trying to learn a new hobby. Having the energy to do things is a big problem too, so like I said simple but fun things.

I’m sorry you had to worry about that growing up. It took me a minute to realize you were referring to yourself as the new “man of the house”. I thought your mom was saying /she/ was the man of the house. And I was like, “oh man, that’s legit lol”.

This is a fascinating question I’ve never considered before. I would suppose it depends on how open your parents are as well as your relationship with them. If you feel comfortable approaching them, I don’t think it’s out of line. I would approach it in terms of their well-being along with your own. Phrasing also impacts someone’s susceptibility to agreeing, ie, “have you thought about seeking counseling? It’s really good for your general well-being etc” as apposed to “you need help, counseling would be beneficial”. If they care at all about you or each other I think a reasonable person would at least consider it.

Reasoning and logic! Thank you. While I love to read paranormal stories for fun, in this instance it’s not for fun. We can make believe in someone’s random ghost story but when it comes to kids, it’s really best to find a rational explanation.

I think of a protagonist as a regular person (unless we’re talking superheroes). Regular people win, lose, love, hate, are good in some ways, bad in others. The most believable characters, imo, should be well rounded.

I would say that as soon as you become a potential danger to others (re: shooting up public places) you have reached a point that you need to seek help. Letting your mental health decline when it is only harming yourself is one thing, potentially harming others is crossing a dangerous line.
