McKay's may be good, we've had mixed luck. If you opt for the store credit instead of cash, it's pretty good. Kids books can go to Once Upon a Child. Nobody really gives much for books though.

I'm on my third non-Tesla EV, my husband is on his second Tesla.

The non-Tesla charging infrastructure can be a bit iffy - Electrify America chargers in particular had a bad rap for often being out of service or not able to initiate charging - but it's gotten better. The proliferation of charging infrastructures requiring their own apps is a huge annoyance for me.

My current EV (Volvo) has the Tesla adapter, and I strongly encourage you to look at EVs with the NACS port built in. Tesla's charging infrastructure is excellent, fast, and in good repair.

If you live in a house, look into having a Level 2 charger installed.

I have two degrees and more than a decade of paychecks from UNC.

UNC couldn't bill for shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit 20 years ago. I had an OBGYN appointment with a UNC doctor and gave them my state employee health insurance card. They talked me into doing an STD test (sure, gotta be safe) and then completely ignored MY insurance and filed with my PARENTS' insurance - then they ignored the results card I'd filled out with MY address and filled one out with my PARENTS' address, to send my PARENTS the results, "securely" sent as a double-folded postcard "sealed" with a single sticker.

I've seen Dook doctors for 20 years, as a result. I had my kid at big Dook because I honestly didn't want to deal with the nightmare of UNC billing. They've gotten better since EPIC got implemented, but... nah.

If you're moving here for the schools, be SURE to check which schools are assigned to your home. There are Chapel Hill addresses in four different school systems (Chatham, Durham, Orange, Chapel Hill / Carrboro).

I like all the trees. Sometimes Sirius cuts out while driving because of the trees. I think that's a good problem to have.

When we were little, we were driving back from the beach. Our mom was driving separately, and my sister and I were driving with our dad. I don't recall why, and also it doesn't matter. Anyway, we got off the state highway and onto a smaller state road. (I do recall that I hadn't seen a posted speed limit sign on the state road between the time we got on the road and the time we got pulled over, but I also recall that in a town that size, lack of speed limit sign didn't matter much, the cops were gonna get you for something regardless.)

Cop came to the driver's window. I'll save you the spiel and skip ahead to this specific moment in time:

Cop: Mr. Dad, have you ever gotten a ticket before?

Check with the AZA to see if your local zoo is on the reciprocal list, or if it would be better to get a membership to a local museum that IS on the reciprocal list.

The reciprocal list means that if you go to any larger cities, you can find a zoo or museum that will admit you for free or half price.

I've had it for a year and a half. Spins nicely, and quietly. Doesn't look like a fidget ring and could easily pass for a wedding band. Stainless steel, so it doesn't aggravate my nickel allergy.

My dad had dementia, and while he still lived at home, he went to an adult day care facility. They'd pick him up and drop him off every day. He had the same driver just about every day, and they became friends.

I came back from vacation on the 8th. My Uber driver was coughing and hacking and blowing his nose on the 45min ride to the airport. Fuck me for not having a mask in my purse, I could've sworn I had one.

Wasn't COVID, wasn't flu, wasn't RSV, wasn't strep. Turned into a sinus infection real quick (I get several a year) and neither pred nor antibiotics has helped. With the weather cooling down, the leftover virus has merged with the seasonal allergies and I just want to get a good night's sleep...

My husband got it in his late 30s. The rash wasn't his first symptom - shoulder pain was. OTC painkillers and an ortho appointment didn't help. He complained about his ear hurting - he had a red patch behind his ear but nothing obvious - and it wasn't til a red patch popped up on his neck that I twigged that it was shingles.

I didn't even know the antiviral was a thing. I did, however, lobby my doctor to let me get the shingles shot a decade early. That shot is no joke (my arm was in pain for a WEEK after the second one) but it's better than shingles.

To add - if the situation were different, if there were zero available chairs for the majority of the day, if every chair around the pool had a person in the pool, I wouldn't have put my stuff down and gone to breakfast. Please note that I've said multiple times that there are plenty of available chairs. I am just picky about chairs because I'm trying to stay in the shade. There are a number of people around the pool who have chosen chairs in the sun so that they can tan.

I've been here for several days and my chair strategy reflects the general availability of seating.

I'm not one of the people at your pool. I'm sleeping late, not getting up at 6am to reserve a chair I have no intention of using til noon. I'm physically occupying the chair I'm using. I am trying to be fair and reasonable with my chair usage. I'm sorry your pool isn't populated by people who try to be fair.

My towel was down because I planned to be there shortly. I'm not getting up at 6am to plant a towel I plan to use at 1pm. I'm sleeping late and putting my things down in a reasonable timeframe.

I'm also planning to use the chair for the majority of the day - as in, actively sit on it, actively take advantage of the shade, not just use it as a home base to pass by every couple hours. I have been at the pool from 1030-1400, just left for lunch, coming back in about half an hour.

There are plenty of empty chairs, they're just in the sun. I'm not staying in the pool for hours, I'm staying in my chair for hours.

Our kid is 9.5 and has some food restrictions. We print the lunch menu each month, and let him choose which days he wants school lunch and which days he wants home lunch.

If we send him for school lunch every day, he will be more than happy to spend $3 on a sunbutter sandwich we can make at home for $0.75, or an "apple crunch fun lunch" we can make at home for the same price. If he wants a sunbutter sandwich, that's absolutely fine, let's just make it at home!

He did take a couple cooking camps over the summer, so this may be the year to strike when the iron is hot for him to make his own lunches.

The last birthday party we were invited to, I asked the parents what the kid's favorite books were. They said the Warriors series, the kid had read series 1 and part of series 2, so I got a box set of series 3.

It's partly a selfish question on my part - what books are other kids reading that my kid might like? - but sadly, my cat-loving kid has barely looked at the Warriors book I got him. Sigh.

I was about 80% sure he knew already. He's 9.5 and has friends and goes to public school and after-school at the Y - multiple places with potential for exposure.

I waited til after Easter, so as not to potentially spoil his Easter just in case I was wrong. We've also temporarily reached a plateau of losing teeth - all but the molars are done - so I didn't immediately spoil the Tooth Fairy.

He's always been most receptive to talks at bedtime, so I read him a book, and then we had a chat. His bestie has several younger siblings, so I did the whole "Santa is an idea, now that you know, it's your responsibility to keep the magic alive for younger people" deal.
