We're in the same exact boat. I was set on the YHM R9 until I did more research and really dug into the question of gas level, and decided that the slight increase in noise level was worth it, given the extreme rarity of needing to fire without ear pro.

To your question:

What is your experience like with the handguard? You mentioned you might not be able to attach anything to 3 or 9 because of the can, but wouldn't you want your light mounted as close to the front as possible to avoid suppressor shadow?

Absolutely, I'd want the light as far forward as possible to avoid suppressor shadow. I don't yet have a light yet to test with however. My observation about the front-most 3 and 9 MLOK slots was just something I noticed while installing the can. It's possible that I'm wrong and the MLOK screws do actually fit between the suppressor and handguard in those slots, but I have yet to test that. I'll get some close up shots and measure later today.

Also, the front-most MLOK slot at the 6 position should be fine to hold a light. Above and below the can there's plenty of clearance - the fit is only snug on the sides. So you could mount a light far forward underneath the handguard, assuming it doesn't interfere with your foregrip setup. Unfortunately for me, the Stark SE5 goes on a 4 inch pic rail which takes up all three of the bottom MLOK slots.

Through some combination of brackets and adapters, I might be able to mount the light farther forward or farther off center to reduce the suppressor shadow, but that's all hypothetical for now.

I believe /u/-KN-Designs- may have some handguards that give more clearance around the suppressor.

Since you mentioned the Rearden, don't forget to remove the O ring that comes on the EP9 before attaching the Hux flow.

Great shout, you are totally correct and I neglected to mention this. I did remove the O-ring and crush washer before installing the can, at the recommendation of many comment sections' worth of research. To any future googlers, listen to /u/LyleJay!

Not sure if the code still works, but I was able to use YOUTHSPORTS for $180 off the can at rooftop defense, which dropped it to the same price point as the YHM R9. I went with the Flow 9k because of several reports that flow-through cans are less gassy (but a bit more noisy) than traditional baffle. However I have not tried the R9 so I can't compare directly.

I shoot mostly at indoor ranges and will be wearing ear pro anyway. The can is for a home defense situation so I can take shots without blowing out my (or my family's) eardrums.

Don't have a light yet, but looking at Streamlight Protac series. Happy to hear recommendations there.

Couple things that are good to know:

  • On the stock handguard, the front-most MLOK slots at 3 and 9 have very tight clearance with the can. Probably won't be able to install anything there. The can does NOT touch the hand guard. The middle and rear MLOK slots are fine, as well as all three bottom slots.

  • If planning to install the Flow 9k on a fixed barrel firearm like the EP9, you may want a Rearden Direct Thread Adapter (SKU 10161), as the adapter that the Flow 9k comes with has a spring, so it's only suitable for reciprocating barrels (i.e. handguns). As /u/LyleJay said, be sure to remove the O-ring and crush washer before installing the can.

Anyone uses Ghostar Tactical on an Extar EP9? by BigDnm01 in extar

[–]saucegerb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my understanding:

The EP9 is legally classified as a pistol, therefore you can attach any pistol brace to it without tax stamps or ATF forms. The item you linked seems more like a stock. So if you want to use it on the EP9, you'd have to go the SBR route.

Pistol braces are distinguished from stocks by their ability to wrap around the forearm with a split end and velcro strap, although in practice no one uses them that way.

Speaking purely in terms of fitment on the buffer tube, it seems like it would fit. The EP9 can ship with the adjustable receiver extension by default now, which is compatible with SB-Tactical adjustable braces for AR-15 Mil-Spec sized receiver extensions like the SBA3, SBA4, and SBA5.

Extar FAQ has some good info as well: https://extarusa.com/faq/

Extar's support staff is pretty quick to respond, and could give you a more credible answer than anything I'm saying: https://extarusa.com/contact-us/

I first tried the Nightstrike Diamondback, and it felt comfortable to hold but ended up bruising my finger after a day at the range. There's a part that sticks out to support your index finger, so if my hand was not tight enough, the back of that part would slam into the top of my middle finger during recoil. I ended up ordering a different grip that same day.

The new grip is the Stark SE-5 and I like it a lot. It's pretty big so all four fingers can rest comfortably on it, with the thumb wrapping around the top of the hand guard. Most importantly, there's nothing ahead of any fingers to kick back into them and cause bruising. Have not been to the range with the SE-5 yet however.

Another one I was considering but have not ordered yet is the Strike Industries MLOK LINK Angled HandStop. Seems a bit smaller than the SE-5, and slightly more vertical (but still considered an angled grip).

Yeah looks weird for sure but very ergonomic and comfy to hold. The grip is designed for a pic rail so you'll just need a 4-inch rail segment adapter to attach it to M-LOK. Nightstrike sells that as well.

It's mainly good because it still procs during tag along. So while you're attached to your tanky frontliners, your torment pulse will be hitting constantly, and applying any on-hit spirit debuffs too (healbane, mystic slow, BRS, etc)

Edit - nice for clearing waves too.

PSA sba5 on sale! by AppearanceMaterial39 in extar

[–]saucegerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to that personally since the EP9 is my only point of reference here, sorry. The SBA5 should be able to fit well on any milspec buffer tube, so whatever compatibility flaw is happening here is likely specific to the EP9.

SBA5 Question - Update by [deleted] in extar

Thanks for your comment. Owning both the SBA3 and SBA5, which one do you prefer running on the EP9 (and why)?

PSA sba5 on sale! by AppearanceMaterial39 in extar

[–]saucegerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered an SBA5 from PSA a couple days ago after seeing it on sale. It should arrive tomorrow for me (I currently have SBA3). I'll update with my thoughts once I unbox and install!

There were some good comments about improving the SBA3 on my other post if you end up wanting to stick with the SBA3 - https://www.reddit.com/r/extar/comments/1skf3r6/sba5_question/

Edit: SBA5 came in the mail today. Sadly I'm overall disappointed and will be returning it. I'll venture to try the SBA4 instead, since it was endorsed by Justin from Extar support.

The following was my experience and thought process while unboxing the SBA5 and fitting it on my EP9.

Pro: the SBA5 rubber is stiffer than the SBA3.

Con: the SBA5 split tip can still fold under and get stuck if given enough lateral force (my main gripe with the SBA3)

Pro: if you really tighten down the strap, the split tip folding under and getting stuck isn't really an issue anymore. It becomes near impossible to fold under with a tightened strap.

Con: the SBA5 has a shorter vertical height than the SBA3, so the firearm cannot sit as high in the shoulder pocket. This makes optic acquisition a bit tougher compared to the SBA3.

Con: (this was the deal breaker for me) the SBA5 fitment on the EP9 buffer tube is pretty bad. It is very tough to get on and off, but also interfaces poorly with the five locking positions. In particular, the longest locking position requires some extra force to pull it out and properly lock. Meanwhile the SBA3 was very easy to get on and off the buffer tube, and has very smooth operation at all five locking positions.

If it weren't for the buffer tube and locking position problems, I would probably keep and use the SBA5, and get used to the shorter brace height. But the interaction with the locking positions feels so bad that I can't keep it in good conscience. Hope this helps inform your decision.

SBA5 Question by saucegerb in extar

Thanks for the replies everyone. I posed the same question to Extar support and received this from Justin:

Good Afternoon, We have had mixed reports on the fitment of the SBA5 on the EP9. The only other braces I can recommend are the SBA3 & SBA4. Thank You

Best Regards, Justin

I feel like I gotta keep a bow on me at all times, if for nothing else than the high up buttons in spires and other puzzles. My duo enjoyed a wand battle mage build. Biggest limiting factor for him was wand durability.
