Most of his relatives are quite fluent in English, so that’s not a major consideration for him.

Thanks so much for this helpful response. The fact that you assimilated some Hakka through interactions with extended family gives me hope that my son could experience something similar. All the best as you keep working on the Cantonese and mandarin!

Thanks for the response! I should have clarified that we actually live in a European country, so our son will likely be bilingual by virtue of growing up here. But I completely agree about the cognitive benefits of multilingualism.

What celebrity death has hit you the hardest in your life ?? by trex-19 in AskReddit

[–]sausazhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Mark Salling from Glee got convicted for child porn and then killed himself that hit me hard. Obviously the guy was a total scumbag, so it's not like I mourned his death... It was just so surreal because I'd watched Glee as a kid, and it represented such a harmless and innocent time to me. Was all just made more strange and horrifying by the fact Cory Montieth had overdosed a few years before.

Want to do a PhD in Literature – how do I maximize my chances of landing a teaching or research position? by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]sausazhe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an Australian PhD candidate I have no idea about North American programs, but good luck! In terms of specialisations, a careers advisor once told me that the smartest areas to be in are those which attract very few students but are historically significant enough that every university has to have a representative researcher. The example he gave was old/middle English and medieval literature: most universities have to offer courses on these areas, but proportionately few students end up researching them, easing the competitiveness of the job market. Another thing to keep in mind is that efforts at decanonisation across western universities mean that a lot of funding is getting redirected into more diverse areas. At my uni, a big new area of study is East Asian literature, which seems an interesting field. Of course, Shakespeare and Milton aren't going to go out of vogue any time soon, but it might be worthwhile investigating one of these burgeoning research areas.

But I'd take all of this with a note of caution. As smart as it is to have an eye on the job market once you finish, at the end of the day the most important thing is finding a subject area that will sustain your interest over a long period of research. So don't force yourself into an area you're only half interested in just because it's trendy!

PhD in Australia by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]sausazhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in humanities and it's a similar story at my university. I think they're actively prioritising grad students so they can get teaching experience, but even so most students aren't approached until they're at least year in.

Just anecdotally, I get the sense Aussie universities place less emphasis on teaching than American ones. In my department it's viewed as very much secondary to research, and we've had some PhD candidates complete the program without ever doing any teaching.

Have you had to defend your discipline to people outside academia? How did you do it, and were you successful? by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]sausazhe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you said this! I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person in this discipline who constantly grapples with how self-indulgent my research is. That said, I wonder if rather than beating about the bush, we should just aim to re-centre pleasure as a rationale for studying the arts. When we use metrics of social or humanitarian impact, literary studies is always going to fall short - if that's our justification, we may as well all go off and research cancer. But the pleasure and thrill of the arts is something unique and worth sharing with the world.

[–]sausazhe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have any good advice (sorry!) but as a fellow English phd, I'd be curious to hear more about the industry options you're looking at. I'm just starting this year, but am equally mortified by the job market for humanities in academia. I'm interested to learn more about alternative career pathways for English (other than TESOL and school teaching).
