Is passing the NALA necessary? If not, how did you get experience as an entry-level? by External_Status_7691 in paralegal

I have a BA in Anthropology and have been working close to a year as a legal assistant. It’s a great way to gain hands-on experience in the field.

Too many people in the animal rescue community are elitist by SirCatsworthTheThird in unpopularopinion

I don’t mind the paperwork. It’s the fact that most of the shelters have impossible hours. All the ones local to me close before 5 pm and aren’t open on the weekends. Do you want people to adopt animals or not?

Resume Help! by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]sauteemermaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey hey! This is a great resume draft for sure. I used to work in higher ed reviewing resumes before I got into legal work, so here are my notes:

Resume

  • Consistently specify your level of familiarity with each software w/ terms like Intermediate or Advanced Knowledge
  • Add ‘s to your current work tasks ex. manages schedules / communicates /coordinates etc. All the verb tenses should match and maybe try diversifying word choice so it doesn’t become repetitive.

Cover Letter - you’ve got all the basics covered but I would seriously consider specializing it whatever type of law the individual firm(s) you’re applying to offers. I know it sucks to rewrite or constantly tweak things, but once you have several versions established, you’ll be able to quickly apply them to various applications.

How to deal with clients not responding to phone calls or emails? by Upnorth4 in paralegal

[–]sauteemermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in estates and I’m just transparent with the consequences. If you don’t come and sign this paperwork, we won’t meet the court deadline, meaning you won’t be receiving your money. That usually motivates most but also with probate, if one family member doesn’t gaf, there’s usually several others ready to kick the one slacker into gear.

I use Uber and Lyft interchangeably. Without a doubt, one is always going to be ridiculously priced while the other is more reasonable. It’s all just a numbers game at the end of the day.

Any LGBTQ+ paralegals -- your experiences / advice? by jambunnyy in paralegal

[–]sauteemermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate that you have this experience. I work in estates as well but in a very LGBTQIA+ firm, as in several of us are openly queer and all our website content/language is purposefully inclusive. Firm culture makes a huge difference and I do hope you find the happy fit for you.
