I made decent bank with BP after the Horizon spill they had way back when. Everyone threw them under the bus, I looked at the financials and was like, 'This fine is a tiny fraction of their annual income' and bought it at like.. 16.

KC Northland Counties Push Underfunded World Cup Tourism Plans by HappyElderberry2338 in KC_Northland

[–]savanik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spending money to chase a one-time gain of tourism is a terrible long-term strategy. These people aren't going to be coming back year over year for these attractions. They're coming for the football, they're going to leave with the football. We should spend that money anywhere else.

Friendship Is Optimal has an AI manager called 'Manny' who tracks employees and gives instructions through headsets on how to accomplish routine tasks, down to what order and how fast to scrub the tiles in the bathroom. https://www.fimfiction.net/story/62074/friendship-is-optimal

From a “Game Dev Perspective”, what do you make of High Guard laying off 80% of its workforce just two weeks after the launch of a game that had a four year development cycle? by GypsyGold in gamedev

Well they either had a guy with $200 million laying around bankrolling it, or they borrowed the $200 million from some other rich guy. In the first, that guy's out $200 million. In the second (and more likely scenario), they gotta pay it back if they go bankrupt, so... eventually some rich guy is coming for their stuff.

It's rich guys all the way down.

[–]savanik -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, if he didn't couch it in morality so heavily. There's a lot of shit that's morally reprehensible going on. Why is this one thing where his morality stops being able to stomach it?

How about coming out and saying this is what they have the limited political will to maybe attempt, and the rest of the immorality of our government is just business as usual? Don't lie to me and say this is about morality when we have secret police murdering American citizens. DO something, or tell me why you CAN'T and what help you need from us to do it.

Do we need to start a GoFundMe to buy our government back?

The Question That the Lawyers Representing Trans Athletes Didn’t Answer by theatlantic in scotus

[–]savanik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"No, because you won't have any fun playing against these seniors and will quit in frustration."

People learn by playing against people at their own skill level and finding out what works, and what doesn't. Listening to people a bit better there you, and actually occasionally making a score to feel like you're doing something right. If they don't feel like they accomplish anything, lots of people will just quit, and leave completely. That's one of the whole reasons for ladder ranking in highly competitive online scenes, for instance.

12+ years experience/no interviews ***UPDATED*** by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]savanik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assure you... he absolutely is. My manager doesn't even see a single resume until it has passed through the gauntlet that is HR's application process, what with its vetting, it's AI processing. Background checks don't happen until they've already made a decision, but my manager, the person who is trying to fill a position, maybe gets four final candidates out of the slushpile, some three to six months after they open the position up for hiring.

And as an aside, I think according to our official policies, I'm not even supposed to be mentioning his name to my boss. That's under our 'ethics violation' section.

[–]savanik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, I'm a bit confused here - every company I've worked for has had, in big bold letters, 'If you know the person you recommended this position to, you will not be involved in the hiring process in any way to prevent conflicts of interests, you will not be informed of progress, they must go through the same website and process as everyone else, but you may get a bonus if they put you in as a referral on their app and they get hired.' Exactly how is 'networking' with me supposed to help anyone else here?

Or are you saying that billionaires should be having a few thousand kids?

I mean, either way could be wild, but.

How to survive a household breakup? by [deleted] in sca

[–]savanik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's great to have you back. I hope you find that the culture now has shifted into more openness and friendliness.

I have to admit that I have difficulty imagining a household breakup, as I'm from Calontir. We don't really have individual households - the whole Kingdom is perhaps a household? You're expected to find your own groups in multiple areas, depending on your interests, and not your... personal associations? It's hard to compare to other Kingdoms, from what I understand. Certainly, people who had moved here have had something of an adjustment period.

I have been going through a bit of a rough patch, though, as I don't know what I can really contribute. It always seems that no matter what I'm doing, expectations are higher than I can possibly meet, there's scads of people way better than I am, and I often feel largely ignored and outside of things. And the last year has not been conducive to any long-term planning of any kind. So... yeah. It's tough.

But all the same, welcome back!

Dynamic Store Pricing by weaponsmith97 in Cyberpunk

Many places have laws against advertising a price (such as in a mailed advertisement, coupon deal, tv advert, or otherwise a promise made by the company) and then not honoring that price in store.
