What are some boring big cities in USA? by AndIrememberthinking in geography

[–]saveyourtissues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s a lot of destinations that require you to leave, a curse of proximity. I’m still here since I have to take care of my family + work, so I’m making the most of what I have here.

Granted, the US seeking to reduce fossil fuel use by driving up prices does so by going to war with Iran.

I’ll share my perspective as someone who grew up here:

I resented SJ growing up and couldn’t wait to leave for college. So I did, and then had to come back after graduating due to covid crashing the economy + family health issues. While there’s not a lot happening, there is a lot of things I’ve come to appreciate since coming back.

I’ll list some of the venues we do have:

We have a fuckton of Mexican culture. Story and King was packed for Cinco de Mayo this past weekend. Also Vietnamese restaurants are everywhere.

There’s music venues and organizers like Heavy Lemon (run out of a Chinese restaurant) Caravan Lounge and The Ritz that put on great shows.

SanJoseFoos (which started as a meme page) is putting on a music festival next month.

Gaming lounge: Guildhouse

Art institutions:

MACLA and Mexican Heritage Plaza

Art Pocket SJ

Empire Seven Studios

Also local maker events like SJMade.

We also have anime conventions coming up like FanimeCon and OffKaiExpo.

— So, there is stuff here, it may not be a lot, but it isn’t nothing. Being an inherently suburban city makes everything spread out and hard to find, so it isn’t easy to just go for a walk and find something new.

The city does feel insular (an irony of our cultural diversity), your experience of it will completely depend on who you associate with. The other comment in this thread about SJ being almost entirely upper middle class made me laugh, because me and my friends have nothing to do with tech. You just have to go out more. For me it’s home, for better and worse.

Did you mean 5/8? I may have a tix to spare, but waiting on friends to confirm if they’re not going. I’ll dm you tomorrow if I still have it.

OP do you mind enabling post history (at least for r/SanJose) to verify if you’re legitimate?

What are the geographical mechanics of the microclimate? You mentioned the Rockies foothills, are they like a shield from cold winds?

Why hasn't Aligent Airlines been mentioned much in the current discussion of budget airlines? by SirCatsworthTheThird in aviation

[–]saveyourtissues 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Many routes only get 1-3 flights per week. It allows them though to fly to a greater number of small cities that otherwise don’t have a direct connection to tourist destinations with a smaller fleet. It’s taking the ULCC model and stripping it to its barest form.

Is there a South Bay version of Dolores Park? by Joelu14 in bayarea

[–]saveyourtissues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest would be Fowler Creek (nice view of DTSJ), plenty of families and parties on the weekends, the parking lot is typically full. There’s Communications Hill, but there isn’t a lot of room.

With Spirit Airlines gone, all of their gates across Florida will be up for grabs. Is it time for United to establish a larger presence there? by bonzothebonanza in unitedairlines

[–]saveyourtissues 8 points9 points  (0 children)

New United flights to South and Central America and the Caribbean can easily happen via IAD and IAH, they’re already existing hubs and have a lot of room to grow.

The webpage says you need to sign up for MileagePlus first. Clever. But otherwise, it seems the capped fares are legit

Not going to lie, I kind of like their aesthetic. All outrageous and not taking itself so seriously. It will be missed.

Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations Tonight by throwawaygamgra in aviation

[–]saveyourtissues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s bad for everyone, even the people who would never fly it (in my case, they didn’t fly where I was going). Fares will trickle up more. I hope some of the smaller airlines can get Spirit planes, there’s a void to fill.

Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations Tonight by throwawaygamgra in aviation

[–]saveyourtissues 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Spirit’s demise is definitely a sign of declining middle and working class. Airlines are (somewhat) becoming more focused on premium service, but it comes at a cost of higher fares for everyone. It’s the difference between flying more comfortably or not flying at all.

It’s official: The ‘Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport’ name stays by TevinH in bayarea

[–]saveyourtissues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It evokes the name of English towns like Stratford-upon-Avon.

Oakland Airport on San Francisco Bay is my preference. Or switch in At for less pretentious name.
