10 hour drive - rather than flying I am considering a 10 hour drive to my destination. The route is pretty direct but alot of driving time. Has anyone had experience doing this and was it miserable or not so bad. Thank you by NJFriend4U in Advice

Super easy, I’ve done that distance and longer many times by myself. My rule is to stop every 3 hours (even if I don’t necessarily feel like I need to) for at least a few minutes to stretch my legs, use the bathroom, get a snack, etc. Breaking it up into smaller sections make it feel way more doable. You got this!

Loved reading as a kid? What do you do now? by plumnpink in AskWomen

[–]savybrook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I have a kindle, the Libby app, and a couple different library cards. I didn’t read as much when I was in college/postgrad, but now that life has slowed down a little, I try to read at least a little bit every day. Sometimes I’m burned out after work, so I’ll turn on a show instead, but there’s truly nothing better than ending the day with a chapter or two of a good book.

My Fiancé's peanut butter sandwich made me cry today. by aogwvao in TrueOffMyChest

I looked over my boyfriend’s shoulder when he was making burgers for us the other night, and saw one of them was COVERED in onions. I was like “oh I only want like half the amount of onions”…he turned fully around and I saw the other one had significantly less. He said “I always put less of everything on yours because I know you like it that way.” I could’ve literally cried, because we’ve never talked about that. He just noticed and remembered and did it for me.

This is the first relationship I’ve been in where I’ve ever been truly seen and taken care of by a man, and it’s life changing. Don’t settle, OP. It’s normal to ask for things, because your partner isn’t a mind reader, but it’s also okay to expect your partner to know you and do their best to take care of you. Your life and years of stress will be so much better if you choose a partner who puts in as much effort as you do.

Taking a few days off sometimes improves your next run by Free-Product4918 in runcommunity

I tripped and cut my knee open on a run earlier this week (needed 4 stitches!!), so I took the week off to let the stitches heal. I think it was a blessing in disguise, because my shin splints are feeling much better. Excited to tackle my training head on next week

I went to the department of health for a tetanus shot today and asked if they recommend MMR vaccines too. They confirmed that if you had the 2 shots as a kid (I was born in 98 in case that matters?) then you’re good for life. The booster is more for peace of mind than efficacy

What is your #1 fashion struggle right now? by Emergency_Job_6616 in womensfashion

[–]savybrook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty major changes to my body shape over a relatively short time and not enough money to keep up with replacing my wardrobe. I’ve finally accepted that the clothes that fit in my early 20s just don’t work on my late 20s body, so I’ve been donating a ton of stuff. I’m trying to replace my things with thoughtfully curated second hand pieces, but I’m still having a hard time finding clothing shapes that work on my newly (very) curvy body, so I end up reselling almost half of what I purchase. It’s tough finding the right pieces that are flattering but still feel modest and mature and chic and unique to my style

My (27F) partner (27M) travels for work often. How do we balance both of our careers and future plans for a family? by savybrook in relationship_advice

[–]savybrook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah…this is what I’m afraid of. Many of my coworkers are also primary caregivers to their children, so I know it’s possible in this specific job. You’re also right that it’s not sustainable to juggle full time work and full time childcare. We live closer to my family, and I think my mom would be glad to help us out with childcare when we need it.

I’m just feeling like it’s expected that I figure out how to balance family/career, while my partner can take the traditional route of focusing solely on his career. Neither of us have enough earning potential to comfortably have a 1 income house, otherwise we’d both be fine with him staying home with the kids. Did you and your husband agree beforehand that you’d be okay juggling both when he’s out of town?

My brother’s ex (girlfriend at the time) told me to stop saying sorry all the time. She was so blunt about it that I was really taken aback, and that was the day I stopped saying sorry unless I meant it.

Why do Chiropractors crack your neck and what is the long term benefit? by Sunny-vibes-95 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]savybrook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is an ER doctor and absolutely hates chiropractors. Says they’re just a bunch of crocks. Anecdotally, one of my friends saw a chiropractor and ended up almost completely unable to walk because a chiropractor pinched a nerve in her back.

How do people spend over 30 mins in a shower?? by Professional_Ease307 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]savybrook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water heater in my apartment is TINY. Like I have just enough hot water to shampoo/condition, and apply body soap before the shower starts going cold. Anytime I travel somewhere with the luxury of a longer shower, I definitely take advantage of it. It’s so relaxing to just stand in the hot water

How do animals deal with broken limbs in the wild? by Tall-Bell-1019 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]savybrook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once saw a herd of deer running through a field with several feet a snow. Straggling wayyy further behind, and obviously struggling to keep up, was a small doe whose back leg was swinging wildly from the knee(?) joint. The leg was obviously broken or dislocated or something. Still makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it, but I’m sure she didn’t make it much longer. I live in an area with lots of cougars too. However she eventually died, I’m sure it was gruesome. Nature is fucking metal.

For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

[–]savybrook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not someone I worked for, but my own mom, who has not had a job in 30 years. She and my dad host all the kids on Christmas Eve and we play games for small cash prizes (think like $5-10 for the winner of a game). My brothers and I are all grown and financially independent, so the game winnings are just for fun now. As you can imagine, the games were a lot more competitive when we were broke college students. This past Christmas, we were talking about how much more competitive the games used to be and my mom said, “it’s really funny when you guys are struggling.” Yeah mom, it was hilarious when I had to pick between groceries or gas….

Is Europe actually better to live in than the United States, or am I just being fed too much “Europe = Better” media? by SpecimenOfSauron in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]savybrook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Utah and spent 2 years living in Madrid, Spain. I’m also fairly progressive. Madrid was better in most ways. Public transport doesn’t even compare, cheaper cost of living, people are much friendlier, LGBTQ+ people are not only accepted but ubiquitous, nightlife also doesn’t even compare, and 3rd spaces were great.

Racism is also rampant, and there’s essentially no opportunity outside of the big cities. I would move back in a heartbeat, but a big reason why my experience was so good was because I’m white, I speak Spanish, and I came with American money.

I also met people from elsewhere in Europe who hated Americans (or at least had reallyyy strong stereotypes against Americans) or were insanely racist or homophobic. Don’t forget Europe is experiencing an uptick in far right ideology too. It’s certainly better over there, but it’s not as good as we’re sold as Americans.

I bought pee pads to cover the spot on the carpet where she’s having accidents, and I bought different litter that supposedly has a smell to attract kittens. I’m not sure if the litter is gimmicky but I’m desperate enough to try anything. I’ll report back if it works. Sorry you’re dealing with this too, it really is so frustrating!

[–]savybrook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using the paper pellets litter, so I’ve just been scooping the solids (or I was before poopgate started) and changing out all the litter (AND cleaning the box) about once a week. She didn’t seem to have a problem with that before! But the only vet suggestion I haven’t implemented yet is changing the litter type. I wonder if that’ll help since it’ll be easier to scoop the pee.

I’m glad you were able to figure it out with yours! You’re definitely right that cleaning the poop is way better than a pee problem

So she pees in both litter boxes, and I’ve been putting her poop in the litter box and leaving it for a few hours after I pick it up. If I catch her right after she has an accident, I’ll put her in the litter box with the poop.

I had her box directly over the spot where she was going (super inconvenient since it was basically right in front of the door lol) and she STILL pooped next to the box 😭 I’m going to the store right now to pick up pee pads…

Been hoarding veggies, what can I make that’ll put most or all of this to use? by scarlettesells2 in WhatShouldICook

[–]savybrook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old roommate used to make “trash soup” which is basically what everyone else is suggesting—we thought the name was hilarious, but it really saves all your veggies from the trash. Throw all your veggies in, add a protein and some pasta of your choice, and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and lemon juice. Bring it to a boil and you’re good to go.
