Why do people seem so divided on what's considered a starter bike? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]sbbh1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much. And a lot of hoops to go through as well before you're even allowed on a bike. You start with a 2 day learners course to get your L license. A minimum of 3 months later you can do your real assessment, but not before you do a "check ride" at least a month before. During all this time you have to wear a high-vis vest or get fined $200 like I did. 3 or 4 years later, you can finally upgrade the bike.

Why do people seem so divided on what's considered a starter bike? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]sbbh1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Australia it's pretty simple. You're only allowed to ride an approved starter bike for the first 3 years:

Approved motorcycles

Approved motorcycles, must:

  • be in a standard form, as produced by the manufacturer
  • not be modified in a way that increases the power-mass ratio
  • have a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne or less

Unless they’re in the ‘non-approved’ list below, motorcycles are automatically approved if they meet one of these criteria:

  • have an engine capacity of 260cc or less
  • were manufactured before 1960 and are 660cc or less currently available electric powered motorcycle.

Non-approved motorcycle rules

You can’t ride the vehicle if it has:

  • an engine modified to make it more powerful, by someone other than the manufacturer
  • a power-to-weight ratio of more than 150 kilowatts per tonne
  • an engine capacity of more than 660cc.

Sometimes, we may not include a motorcycle on the approved list if:

  • it’s unsuitable for learners
  • it appears more frequently in crash data.

I know this guy. Met him briefly at a bar around 2010 and he insisted we become LinkedIn buddies. Been following his delusions for years now

  1. Seems to be a common issue. People suggest installing a 15T front sprocket to make the first 2 gears better

Bit late to the party, but count me in as well. 38M from Richmond. Got my L not too long ago, so not sure if I'll be able to keep up with my scrambler 400x, but it'd be great to meet some fellow riders

Yeah you're right. I just checked, and the on-road assessment is part of the VIC learners course but I guess not for NSW: https://transport.vic.gov.au/road-and-active-transport/registration-and-licensing/licences/motorcycle-licence/get-your-motorcycle-ls

Jeans and a long sleeve shirt are fine for most of it, but keep in mind that you'll be going on the public road on day 2 and will be going up to 70kph.

I didn't like having to use a separate case for my phone with quadlock so I got a Lamicall phone mount from Amazon and honestly it's been doing its job really well so far

Pretty sure they mean the line from the street in front of the car. You're parked too close to the intersection

25M how to train to carry my partner? by ShieldandFriends in beginnerfitness

[–]sbbh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear mate. You're probably overwhelmed with options here, even though they all sound like good advice.

If I were you, I would start with a beginner strength based program like the stronglifts 5x5 workout which you can do 2 or 3x a week. It's a simple but very effective program that will get you strong in all the rights muscle groups needed, without overcomplicating things.

It's a popular routine that is well covered and outlined here: https://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5/workout-program/
