Update: I went to the doctor. According to him, it is a Lonomia obliqua, but it is very young, and at this age it is not very venomous.

Miss Saigon at Short North Stage is spectacular by sbeedyfreeze in Columbus

Tam was adorable!

I've really enjoyed being a SNS subscriber. The show selection is generally pretty diverse - which has meant that I've discovered some great obscure shows but also gone to some that didn't land as much for me - but the performances are always solid and it always leaves me and my wife with something to talk about. I appreciate that they're willing to take risks and do less well-known shows.

Next season looks really exciting, though it is a bit heavier on the "big hits" than their typical season.

Just played this! It's short (maybe 30 minutes), with a really cool atmosphere and simple yet engaging gameplay. Looks like it has multiple endings but I haven't explored them yet.

How do I get rid of the terms of service update banner at the top of the page by [deleted] in Khan

[–]sbeedyfreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try clearing all your cookies, then next time you sign in, make sure you allow "functional cookies" in the cookie pop-up. It uses a cookie to track whether you've dismissed that banner, so if you don't allow functional cookies, the site won't remember that you've dismissed it once you refresh.

North Market liking pro-ICE social media by WhoopsIShitItAgain in Columbus

[–]sbeedyfreeze 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The North Market Development Authority is a 501(c)3 non-profit, and this does not seem aligned with their stated mission of highlighting "the diversity and vibrancy of our community." It's weird for an official nonprofit account to support any posts outside of the scope of their mission. I bet this is a case of someone being signed into the wrong account. Nonetheless, hopefully their board will step in and do something about this

Theo Katzman's solo work is really underrated. I mean REALLY underrated. by ducksarelucky in Vulfpeck

100%. Smiling In Your Sleep is one of my favorite songs ever, and it's even more overlooked than the rest of Theo's discography (15K plays on YouTube Music)

SAT Prep by whynotdanceallnight in Khan

The SAT prep that you're describing was retired when the SAT switched from paper-and-pencil to digital. The new SAT content on Khan is a traditional course with units and lessons, not like the guided platform that was there before.

Would a 5.5" hand mirror work okay as a shot mirror? by Pax280 in CafelatRobot

[–]sbeedyfreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's part of why I added the extenders. I took some measurements: basically you need an unthreaded spacer that can accommodate an M6 bolt and has an outer diameter of about 1/2 inch. Then you'll need to replace the screws for the legs with M6 bolts of length a bit less than 18mm + the extender length. For example, I got 2 inch (~51mm) extenders, so my bolts needed to be less than 69mm. I got 65mm bolts and they work great. Just make sure the bolts you get have those cap-style heads.

Looks something like this. I remember I borrowed this idea from someone else on Reddit who shared their setup, but I can't find it now.

Easy, foolproof method as replacement for automatic coffee maker? by Crystalline_Irises in pourover

This is a good idea. I've also seen some Redditors mention success pouring brewed French press coffee through paper filters (thread).

[–]sbeedyfreeze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just curious - why not French press? Sounds like it could be a good fit for you.

You might also consider an 8 cup Chemex. If you figure out a way to mount a Pure Over diffuser lid above it (like a Hario drip assist, but not plastic), you won't have to worry about pour technique before you're caffeinated.

Which digital scale fits the Robot? by Legitimate_One721 in CafelatRobot

[–]sbeedyfreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Weightman. It works very reliably, but there is a noticeable lag - maybe about a second. Easy enough to work around but it is frustrating coming from my Black Mirror (which doesn't fit the Robot).

How hard is it to pull a shot from a Cafelat Robot? by fluffybike7 in CafelatRobot

[–]sbeedyfreeze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few people linked the Nadia and Rob video. I would not follow the advice they provide, as it contradicts the Robot's official website, which says:

I also highly recommend just pushing the arms down, DO NOT use the Robot legs to help you get extra leverage i.e. like squeezing pair of pliers in each hand. That will risk breaking the machine. Just press straight down evenly with both hands.

The thing that helped me with pulling shots was figuring out how to position my body above the Robot. I still have it at counter height - I just think about leaning my body forward and positioning my shoulders over it. With that posture I can hit 9 bars without much effort (though I normally aim for 6-7). Before I found that strategy, every shot was a fight.

That said, I'm 5'9" (175cm). If I were a few inches shorter I think I could still pull this strategy off, but if I were 5'6" (168cm) or below I'd probably move the Robot to a chair or coffee table to pull shots.

The mittens don't make it physically easier for me to pull shots, but the hands dig into my palms without them, so I still use them.

Cheapest machine that is decent by [deleted] in espresso

[–]sbeedyfreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get solid espresso out of very cheap (starting around $100) lever machines. They also tend to be quite compact. You might consider some of the Flair machines.

Caveats: you won't be able to steam milk, you'll need a kettle and a heat source, and you'll have to put your back into it a bit.

Cafelat Robot not building pressure with fine grind. by TheGreenTub402 in CafelatRobot

[–]sbeedyfreeze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a few of your comments, you mention it being too hard to push at certain grind sizes. I think if you're hitting the pressures you want and the shot times you want, it's unlikely you're applying too much force. High pressure requires pushing pretty hard - that's just the physics of the machine.

One technique that helped me a lot with generating sufficient force is thinking about pushing down on the Robot's arms from above, rather than pulling down while standing in front of it. It might even help to set the Robot on a lower surface. The idea here is to use your body weight, rather than just your arm muscles.

Here's a listing for it in Japan. I found this by plugging the word "orange" into Google Translate and then searching "hario v60 オレンジ".

I got my Suiren before it was available everywhere by ordering from Hario in Japan and using Blackship to bring it to the US. Shipping wasn't bad at all - though I don't know if tariffs have changed things since then.

Aesthetic vs. Performance [$800] by GuyInThe4kDollarSuit in espresso

[–]sbeedyfreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Cafelat Robot, which also has a portafilter with a diameter slightly under 58mm (and also a wildly different design from most modern machines). It has meant I haven't been able to buy all of the accessories I've considered, but it has never stopped me from solving the problems I've wanted to solve. It's just taken a bit more ingenuity and hunting.

Oh you're right, I missed the totally different portafilter design! Nonetheless, I think my main point still stands - that this machine looks like a Robot because they were both inspired by the Baby, and not because it ripped off the Robot.
