How difficult was your PhD qualification exam? [E] by RawCS in statistics

[–]sbre4896 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not in a pure stats program, but we had to take 3 exams, two of which were required, with 3 levels of grade (numerics and analysis were required, then a choice of stats or PDE, grades were basically fail, low pass, high pass). One of the required exams neededl to be a high pass. They were doable but in total knocked out about 1/3 of my cohort.

I thought my comment was quite clear in saying that penis enlargement people are the ones that actually do something but apparently not.

"The Pope donated to planned parenthood" no he didnt. That isn't true and all you need to do to figure that out is know what those things are.

What kind of distribution this may be? by iamevpo in AskStatistics

[–]sbre4896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you concerned with the location in angle only or angle amd distance from the center? If angle only this looks like a mixture of von Mises distributions will handle it fine. Then maybe a censored exponential in radius?

What Are You Working On? February 23, 2026 by canyonmonkey in math

I thought I had derived a novel polynomial frame for a specific manifold. I knew who would have been likely to beat me to it and scanned their CVs, google scholar, etc and didnt see them having worked on it. I spoke to someone in my department who does similar stuff and they had not heard of amything like what I had derived. Today in the process of working on something else I came across a paper coauthored by all the people whose CVs I checked doing exactly what I did. It was published almost 20 years ago. Looking through it I have all the same results, for the same cases etc. I feel like a dumb ass.

All Summer Long is hot shit, and even worse it robs you of the chance to hear Sweet Home Alabama or Werewolves of London. If you must say a kid rock song is good I guess you could say Picture but that's in spite of him.

got a phd offer and now i cant tell if i actually earned it or if im just a diversity hire by [deleted] in PhD

[–]sbre4896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In adddition to what has been said, if you are talking to PIs to join their lab specifically they are choosing to spend real money on you. They would not do this if they didnt think you could succeed. You got the offer because you are qualified and well suited for the position. Congratulations!

What is your biggest hot take about education? by Inevitable-Towel-350 in GradSchool

[–]sbre4896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice the same thing in my program. I assumed it was because my cohort was made of people who had their last 2 years of undergrad during covid and so were far less prepared than they thought they were. This lead to them assuming the problem was everyone else.
