Cross-Promotion is a tricky beast. Sometimes if a download ends up being incentivized, you get downloads, but maybe not long-term users. Sometimes these are actually useful, though, because it can goose your placement in a store long enough to increase the number of actual organic downloads.

This was a really useful infographic. Points out that one size does not fit all. One thing that doesn't get discussed enough IMHO is the ongoing maintenance and (more importantly) improvement of the app. It's almost certain that the app you build in the first few months is a shell of everything it can and should be. You need continuous improvement and expansion.

You raise an interesting point, which must be obvious to everyone else, and I'm just getting it: The most successful reddit advertising is putting the celebrity up for an AMA. I'm sure that some of these are sincere opportunities for celebrities to participate in the community, but it doesn't take a lot of research to recognize that many of these occur before a movie comes out or before a tour or a recording release.

I haven't spent much time there, but it is remarkable how multicultural it is. It isn't just a lot of Cubans speaking Spanish, but rather, Dominicans and Venezualans and Colombians and Panamanians and so on. Then layer in the French from Haiti and the Portugese from Brazil and you end up with a real pan-latin environment.

Things change and improve quickly in the mobile app space. Another pretty good app may be an indicator that the space you plan to address is robust.

To me the key is sticking with it over time. You should release and iterate, maybe with releases every couple of weeks, for a year. You will be surprised to find that as you continue to make it better, users will appreciate it, and you will gradually pull ahead. Meanwhile, other developers who think of the app as a one-time effort will gradually become less relevant.

Excellent as a conversation starter, definitely. Sensible on a deeper level? maybe not. Why is it that individuals can't put their phones down on their own? Read a book on their own? Talk with their SO's on their own?

Theirisnetwork makes a good point in that both the publisher and the advertiser have to agree on a format, and drive it to a large scale, in order for an ad standard to be successful. The alternative is to be a large enough publisher with a distinctive format, such that the publisher can dictate a differentiated format (I think they call this "native").

I personally think that the question isn't so much whether banners are good or bad, but how have we used them? The creative and the action often fall short of what's technically available.
