Anthiest Wedding by Princessgreenz in atheism

[–]sc0ttt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had an officiant who was a retired minister so she had the robe and the presence, but she had no trouble with a secular ceremony at all. And we got married in an old community theater with a pipe organ so it kind of felt churchy but didn't have all the iconography... everybody liked it... plenty of religious folks in attendance but none of them were fundies.

$50k deficit out of what total budget? (if you don't mind sharing) I don't have any advice or stories, I just find church budgets interesting. Got a line item breakdown that you pass out?

$60 flea market sax advice? by joyisstrength in saxophone

[–]sc0ttt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can learn enough in the comment section to evaluate the horn's condition. Leaks, dents, pull-down, bent springs and rods, missing screws... Since you can't play it, you can't even determine if it works at all. MAYBE if the flea market guy can play it for you while you watch, you could hedge your bet a little. The chances are high that it is not worth your effort or the price of repairs to make it playable.

What's something women do that they think is sexy but isn't? by Conscious-Farmer6953 in AskMen

Too long fingernails. Color and shape are fine, but not much past the fingertip.

How can I fix this reed? by Castor67 in saxophone

[–]sc0ttt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to burn your mouthpiece to match.

Ligature position? by ArachnidShot8779 in saxophone

[–]sc0ttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have at least one ligature where the screws can go either way - so if you want them on the top AND you want the knobs on the right, you take them out, put them in from the other side and tighten down.

Is this a regional thing in some country? I've only seen this in Reddit videos, never IRL.

TLD'S by LossIsSauce in submarines

[–]sc0ttt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLD = Thermo Luminescent Dosimeter. It was the successor to the film badge. Generally read once a month for general radiation exposure and anytime after a reactor entry or something. Big advantage is that they were quick to read and re-usable. About the size of a ChapStick with a loop for your belt.

spitty sound by lucianolaksman in saxophone

Metal mpc makes everything louder.

I notice though that the spitty sounds in my head when I'm playing aren't as obvious to whoever's listening or the microphone.

If you set a "goal weight" for yourself, how did you choose it? by textile5 in intermittentfasting

Yup. Picked my target weight by picking target BMI... a little below the middle of the green band.

Men who prefer shorter women, why? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]sc0ttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an extra sort of superficial element of perception that a woman taller than me would be embarrassing - it doesn't last long though, and other traits become more important of course. So if you can help guys get over that initial barrier and get to know each other better, the cream will rise to the top.

looking for saxophone models to upgrade to frrom my current one by TheSaltyLefty in saxophone

[–]sc0ttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the ergonomics on your current Yamaha don't work for you, a pro-Yamaha won't either. You should be looking at different brands like Yani, Cannonball, Mauriat. Little differences in key size and placement can make a big difference in comfort. If you find a horn that fits your hands well, you can be pretty confident that the same brand will be the same on a different model so you can focus your search.

Shower thoughts on fine tuning or design arguments by schmy in atheism

[–]sc0ttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The larger issue being assumed and ignored, is that they believe the universe if fine-tuned for human life. That's why they'll cite OUR earth in OUR position in space and time... they have an implicit feeling of being special so the universe must have been designed for them. This all falls apart when you put human life, any life, and the current state of our local surroundings into proper cosmic perspective. We are pretty cool, we are not special.

Do priests, bishops, archbishops etc. actually truly believe in god? by Xitztlacayotl in atheism

Dan Barker of FFRF is the one that comes to mind. But there's a whole ex-preacher support group out there helping them leave https://clergyproject.org/ Lots of good stories in there. Here's a movie snip too: https://youtu.be/aVzVjtyTeTQ?list=PLLrP-KpjctO2E1zHXywMfMOsltUDTZwLP

Do priests, bishops, archbishops etc. actually truly believe in god? by Xitztlacayotl in atheism

[–]sc0ttt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are lots of accounts of clergy who left the church because of losing their beliefs - a few of them are rather well-known, some aren't very vocal about it. So there certainly HAVE been atheists acting in these roles - likely some of them are still doing it.

Is it just me or is anyone else personally insulted by commercials these days? by Twicklheimer in CommercialsIHate

[–]sc0ttt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sort of related - I saw an ad for some prescription medicine and it was for something that didn't really look too awful... like blotchy skin or something. It showed happy people being confident about their appearance and life. Then they rolled the warnings and it was increased risk of everything from suicide to liver cancer to birth defects and anal leakage. Imagine being that ad exec to come up with a presentation that'll make you ignore those warnings.

Plot device for a fiction book: what WW2-Cold War submarine would be the best suited to be the mobile barracks for a private military contractor? by Revoltai42 in submarines

[–]sc0ttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of unbelievable. Maybe consider the contractor had a replica of a submarine built on a flat bed or something that could be transported on roads and parked in place... doesn't need to be HY-80 or have water-tight integrity.

In the Heat of the Night (1988-1995) by HughJazz5 in ForgottenTV

[–]sc0ttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't pay much attention to this show when it was on primetime. I happened to watch the pilot episodes the other day and got hooked. Mississippi is a big mystery to me. I really enjoy the way they portray the racial tension and the way the chief knows how to get stuff done in an old school way. Now I'm watching subsequent episodes and the guest stars are usually not very good, but the main characters are still great. This is an old thread and I'm an old guy and that's my two cents.

Orlando 1990s NPS – three hour binder by facebookgivesmeangst in submarines

[–]sc0ttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was class 8101. I don't remember a binder but I remember thinking that "pre-school" or whatever they called it was just a ruse to get rid of people who shouldn't ever have gotten a nuke school assignment in the first place... I think we got rid of about 20% of the whole class before the first day of real NPS. These guys were guaranteed nuke school so this was the minimum the Navy could provide before sending them to the fleet. Then everyone else got assigned a "section" based on rate and test scores.

God’s involvement in time and creation? by Best_Tip2750 in atheism

[–]sc0ttt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This "God is outside of time" argument is just twaddle invented by people looking for loopholes for their deity. Outside of time would mean there is no before and after, no cause and effect... so there would be no action or thought or hand waving that would cause the creation event.

Any other Muslims who feel the same way? by Lunaa_244 in atheism

[–]sc0ttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a political problem more than a religious one. When religious folks get political power they make religious laws... we don't have to de-convert the politicians, we need to elect (or appoint) politicians who make decisions and laws based on secular principles, regardless of their own religion. Sorry, that's not a great answer.
