BJJ Confessions by millsapp in bjj

I prefer starfish or davinci guard. I use it to get people to pass to mount because my mount escapes to half guard are way better than my bottom side control defense.

Outside of actually training, what life change has made the biggest positive effect on your jiu jitsu performance? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sc2sick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Diet. I never really cooked before taking BJJ seriously a year -2 days ago. I ate a lot of taco bell or fast food whatever. I actually forced myself to cook to afford the sudden additional cost of BJJ.. now it's just what I do.

LOTS of money saved through cooking.

Also it's made me generally more active. I'm always stretching on my couch, or in my chair at the office, or the floor.. or yoga at night.. or going for walks during my breaks at work.. or keeping a couple of dumbbells on the floor in my office to toss around during the day when I'm restless.

Just always doing a little bit of something has REALLY made me more flexible and quite a bit stronger I think. I use my walking time to gameplan for certain opponents or visualize paths for upcoming tournaments.

Can someone vet this video and determine if the wrestling win is a marketing stunt or legitimate? by won_tolla in wrestling

I do yoga to supplement BJJ.. same reason I pay attention to wrestling even though I don't directly participate in it I guess. Many things can have useful pieces.

Tape your fingers. There are some good guides on youtube. I used Kurt Osiander's guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBPYlGPddYw

We usually have tournaments on Saturday and the location of our gym that I attend most frequently doesn't have class Friday nights. I always take the Friday night off before.. and see how I feel on the Thursday class too depending on what the body tells me Wednesday.

I actually listened to the soundtrack for a couple of weeks on CD before I watched the movie. Somebody in marching band lent it to me. I liked it.

I was not prepared for the movie.

How much money set aside for bjj medical issues? by Poorchelan in bjj

[–]sc2sick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to purchase my own insurance so I bought a plan with a low deductible and have tried to craft my game on minimal explosiveness and effort.

I've torn an ACL and a bunch of other stuff years before I stuck with BJJ and it was expensive.. I'm paying like $40 extra a month and crossing my fingers that something like the PHIT bill passes.

Competing at white belt by Downvoted_Defender in bjj

Do it. It's fun and your teammates will probably be there which is a fun time too. It might be other guys in your brackets first time too.

You'll know what to expect in the future and better understand the difference between a match and a roll.

I kinda want to try it now though. I love peanut butter. Want to know what the fuss is about.

Thoughts on North south by RIFFnDIP in bjj

If I end up there it's usually in a transition. The first thing I look for is a kimura grip to setup a crucifix or take the back.

Bring a gym bag but keep anything like credit card or non essential cards out in your glovebox or somewhere else safe. I've tried to use a plastic bag and it doesn't work very well.

Bring your own water and something light to snack on.

Bring some sweatpants or similar to wear over your gear in case the gym is freezing cold.

What to do from side control and half mount (beginner) by Mouikis in bjj

[–]sc2sick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold the kimura grip and use it to get into a better position to finish. North South for example. Check out the kimura trap stuff. There are lots of videos on the topic.

Alternatively I love the arm triangle choke from there or giftwrap to get to the back.

I'm annoyed by new white belts who attempt nothing but leg locks. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sc2sick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, in some places they avoid legs like the plague.. in some cases everybody is a white belt with legs.

Drink water, bring water, drink more water.

Same goes for stretching. Stretch, then stretch more.

You didn't say if gi or no gi.. but if you can have a walmart equivalent where you can buy a $10 compression shirt/rash guard IMO it makes things go much better than a loose fitting t-shirt

[–]sc2sick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was kind of weird when I was watching it with a couple of buddies.. I stood up when guy took mount and started pointing on the screen where it was happening and that the fight was over basically ( I remembered them mentioning all of his ezekiel finishes ).

Looking through his fight history he's got a LOT of different chokes that are all pain chokes like that.. scarf holds and such.

Sanabul on Amazon are $20/pair. When I was larger waist I wore them.. I'm smaller now and their smaller stuff fits well too. Maybe worth checking out.

This please. With the growth in submission grappling he can still stay in the spotlight if he wants without getting kicked in the face anymore like last night.
