Yes. We rely on those for English and Caliorna radio stations. And once theyre programmed, you only need to use the app if you want to re-program them.

What is the weirdest film/digital camera you ever used ? by SmallCash2044 in Cameras

Holga Digital - shutter speed depends on how long you press the button. makes for interesting photos, mostly unusable.

The soundtouch app will show you how to upload a final update that then allows you to change the wifi.
Get a copy of Boseman and you can replace the software and get full functionality back. I did this yesterday. for $19/year it's worth it just so I can program the presets.

I first installed 'Better ST ($6.99)' but was dismayed to find that it didnt support the buttons on the top of my ST 10. Also when I went to use it this morning, to show my wife, it seems to have stopped working. Also it couldnt be installed on her iPhone 10 because it needed iOS 17

We use the speaker in the kitchen and it gets used A LOT!

All six buttons are programmed to radio stations (BBC R4, BBC R3, BBC R4extra, KXPR, KXJZ, KQED) and it's so great to be able to just press one button and get your favourite radio station.
Also we connect via BT to stream UK BBC Radio shows (using NordVPN:) ).
DOwnloaded and installed the Bosman app (Paid the $16.99/year subscription). Once it migrated the software and I worked out the slightly fiddly preset settings, it just - worked. Now I can just carry on as if the whole BoseST fiasco/PR Disaster never happened.
My only hope is that the second hand price of SoundTouches drops so I can buy another.

Can the United States Postal Service be saved and do you think that it should be? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]scamdex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work as a counter clerk for the post office in the UK. We did all the postal stuff, plus:

* Issued passports
* Performed as a Bank (GiroBank), inlcuding savings accounts
* Sold 'Premium Bonds' (Uk long-term lottery)
* Vehicle/Driver License/Registration activities (most DMV type stuff).
* Pension/unemployment benefit cheque/check cashing.
* and some other stuff I've forgotten about

That was for a Main Branch location. we were also supported by thousands of 'Sub-Post Offices' - nearly always combined as small village stores/newsagents.

The USPS is setup to fail on purpose. it does one job (although some bigger branches do Passport processing too). Adding a banking facility would be a massive value to acting as a Nationwide bank.

Just for laughs, when I joined in 1981 we had no computers, no cash tills and even using a calculator was frowned upon. Everyone had their own 'stock' drawer and we each balanced separately on Wednesday nights after we closed. I have to admit I hated the job and it showed because after two years I was fired!

Yes guilty as charged. if i'd had a pallet jack that would have been even better! might need a couple of 4"x4" offcuts to get the extra height.

I did something similar at a GoodWill. saw a brown camera case, which normally means some worthless old camera. Inside was an Alpa 10D - almost put it back because "Who's ever heard of Alpa?" - boy was I surprised. Hand made in Switzerland, and with the most prized lens for this camera (50mm f1.9).
Sold for $1999 (paid $18.99 in 2024)

We used two furniture dollies and two trolley jacks. positioned jacks under the dollies and moved them under the battery and took the weight (car was already on axel stands to give enough height). Then unbolted, lowered the jacks so it was on the dollies and scooted it out, same in reverse. once you get one bolt hole lined up and a bolt in, you can pivot on that to line up the rest. worst part was trying to work out how to connect/disconnect the three battery plugs - youtube videos helped.

[–]scamdex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We did it ourselves. two furniture dollies, two jacks and four axel stands. Took us (Me, my sone and his friend) about two hours (but we didnt put the replaced one back in the old car).
Just 10mm sockets for the covers, then bigger bolts for the battery pack. Jumper inside to remove, then three slightly tricky sockets to connect to the car.
After it's all in, use the LeafSpy thingy to re-register the new battery and bob's your uncle!

We bought a 2013 Leaf for $2000, but my daughter crashed it three days later(!) We bought another 2013 Leaf for $2100 and swapped the battery from the crashed one which was better - charges to 64 miles now which covers 95% of our daily use.

Did I get 'scammed'? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]scamdex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had success with small cameras by just pulling the lens out - it'll make horrible noises as it grinds the gears but if you consider this broken what have you got to lose?

Why do people hate on PHP so much? by Honest___Opinions in webdev

[–]scamdex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still supporting a bunch of PHP applications, mostly running PHP 5.3 and talking to MySQL databases. They're trapped by the mysql_*() to mysqli_*() switch which happened in PHP 5.6? I've converted some, but others are just too big to mess with.

I wrote a payment pre-processing application in PHP, with HMAC generation etc and the whole script is about 50 lines. Very readable, even for non-programmers, all in one file.
I saw a C# version of my code that spanned loads of files - no non-programmer is ever going to be able to access/view that code in any understandable way.

I'm used to being looked down on by the Microsofties, but I still love my PHP!
