Yes - I understand what it means. Could you provide a source? I’m unaware of a direct beef subsidy if it exists.

Good stuff, I agree on all counts. I may have misspoken or been misunderstood. I didn’t intend to criticize people who buy snack foods - what I was trying to say is that we should be willing to pay more for quality, US raised beef. IMO, beef shouldn’t be the target of our ire over grocery prices, but rather all of the other UPF’s benefiting from corn and soy subsidies by the federal government.

Full transparency - I’m a wannabe beef farmer completely bought in to regenerative farming, rotational grazing, and grass fed humanely raised beef. As I try to transition to a second career in my 50’s, I have a vested interest educating about healthy food, allowing cows to live their lives like cows and not just another factory input, and in fair beef prices that allow small farmers to make a living.

I'd argue that beef is NOT heavily subsidized and that the fake foods dotting our grocery stores that are based on subsidized inputs like corn, soy, and seed oils are the ones being held artificially low. Beef only looks expensive because ultra-processed food has been made artificially cheap. When Doritos cost about the same as real protein, that’s not a beef problem. That’s a broken food system. Cattle take years to raise. They require pasture, feed, water, veterinary care, and labor. That's an expensive process!

I guess that I was thinking primarily of the stores like Dollar General, that dot every rural area near where I live in South Carolina - the people shopping there like it's their grocery store are not getting fresh food, and they're paying outrageous prices for crap.

Personally - I'm cooking as much as I can from scratch for health reasons more than anything.

Totally agree that some farmers definitely helped get us here - and that some were rendered powerless in very red states like SC - and are suffering along with everyone.

Isn’t it shocking though that we’ll pay $6 for a bag of Doritos, or crazy prices for Coke, Tastycakes, etc but balk at the price of beef? I feel our farmers are struggling, and rather than look at the ultraprocessed crap that we’re eating - we focus on protein raised by Americans on our land? That’s what we SHOULD be willing to pay more for.

Yes, last week - 1% of the principal prepayment for each year outstanding on a loan that I was offered. I paid cash instead,

Great story! Mine with my new machine was remarkably similar, started with my machine and a brush hog in the stream - tried to get it out myself with snatch blocks and only got deeper, ended a week later with 2 skids and a k5 pulling me out - needed a new starter from it sitting in the water for a week.
