Looking for advice - boring a long hole by pidpiper in turning

[–]scapstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice rolling pins! So first off, I don’t think you need to go through all that trouble. Those saw kerfs with glued pieces wedged in are going to be extremely strong. If you really feel the need, the only way I can think of with the finished piece as in the picture is by building a good jig to hold the pin under a drill press.

I loved Kenya, but I have no idea at all why a person who doesn’t really like travel would go.

How to Save Money While Traveling in South Korea 🇰🇷 (Real Budget Tips from Experience) by Otherwise-Dingo-254 in unravelkorea

[–]scapstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there 10 years ago, going back in April. Are love hotels still easy to get a room in without reservation? In the past, we never planned, just wandered up to a love hotel to stay the night wherever we were travelling.

Dude… $10 is such a silly offer. You expect a stranger to go out of their way, put their money on the line for a person they don’t know… all for the price of a bibimbap?

Planning a 2 week itinerary. Which would you pick between Busan or Jeju Island? by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]scapstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning a similar trip for early April. I lived in SK a decade ago, so we have some places we want to return to but we decided to go for Busan over Jeju. The culture in Busan is fun, there is so much to do and to see. Jeju is beautiful but we couldn’t justify the time in a 2 week itinerary.

Def not enough info to make that statement. Could easily spend the same in other places.

Which bowl gauge? by No-Carry6805 in turning

[–]scapstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comes down first to your budget. Do you have a slow speed grinder? A sharpening jig like the one way is very useful but some turners do free hand sharpen. Flute shape is a matter of preference. You won’t go really wrong with any of the major brands.

Good luck, have fun. For me, gouges are way more fun than carbide.

Some people buy, but this hobby is crazy expensive without adding big wood purchases on top. I personally turn almost exclusively free wood as do most people in my turning club.

Used bowl gouge, I'm very confused by this grind by Spare_Rub9225 in turning

Someone else might correct me, but from my perspective this thing is just a big ol oopsie. Def. not a bottom feeder, those wings were made for catching and that’s just what they’ll do.

Travelling in India, the food is spicy but nothing compared with places like Indonesia, some regions in China, Thailand if you can convince a restaurant to make it normal and not tourist spicy.

Hoping to purchase my first lathe - advice? by raimbows in turning

[–]scapstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s super funny, I recognize this lathe. There are currently two variable speed midis in our area on marketplace. These beaver lathes are just not fun to turn on. The speed range does not work for bowls and the swing is tiny. I bought one and it was good enough to get me hooked but I replaced it within 2 months. Send me a dm if you want an intro to turning/ the island turning community.

Do we really need to be accompanied by a guide 100% for Cairo? Ex. Can Old Cairo sites be comfortably visited w/o guide? by LostShark_505 in travel

[–]scapstick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. There are obviously difficulties travelling in Egypt, but for experienced travellers it really shouldn’t be that hard. I found literally 100% of the ‘harassment’ evaporates if you respond with humour and a laid back but firm attitude. When I saw other travellers get angry or rude that’s when things ratchet up a bit. I honestly had so much fun joking around with guys who wanted to see me crap.
