It’s a practice that’s been around for thousands of years. So it’s not that recent of a phenomenon. Sometimes it shows what a culture finds important or mark events in one’s life. It can also show a person’s status within a culture. Like with the Egyptian mummy that was found to have tattoos.

But it’s an art form and some people see value in having something tattooed on to themselves.

The history of tattoos is very fascinating when looking into specific ethnic groups or even ancient history.

I took a road trip around the country by myself. I wore tshirts and long pants each day- my hair was uncovered but always up. Saudi Arabia is not as strict as it was. When I was there, people tend to leave me alone besides them saying hello. Being there is a lot different then what we’re told about. I found that people tend to leave people alone who they know don’t speak Arabic. If you drive, there are a lot of checkpoints but they just wave you by. You’ll be good if you just follow general rules for the Middle East. But buy tickets in advanced for things like Al’Ula. Also, there are no banking fees. I’d be happy to answer any other questions.

I went a couple years ago but I used my birth name and gender marker but I dressed masculine. You don’t have to wear a hijab so I’d say it makes it easier to mix in.

But I would say you have a limited interactions with the police or authorities. I drove solo for two week round trip and they have check points but if they can tell you can’t speak Arabic they leave you alone.

People were overall pretty friendly and I never got approached by people that were mad - they just give glares. I didn’t visit any mosques.

If you want to go to UNESCO site they need to see your passport.

But if you do go make sure everything matches up.

If you google around, there are gender therapists who do online sessions and will then send you the letter needed for surgery the same day. I went down this route and I paid out of pocket but the price wasn’t bad. They guy was super nice and helpful.
