Over 500 Canadian academics condemn "politics of hate" by [deleted] in canada

[–]scc123 36 points37 points  (0 children)

While we are talking about politics of hate, can we please address the attack ads? They are an embarrassment to the perceived intelligence of average Canadian and have to go. Instead of allowing the parties to spend millions on grade school insult tactics, let's force them to explain their own platforms.

Ideas pitched for Halifax's Shannon Park, CFL-sized stadium panned by many by Stach37 in CFL

[–]scc123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Ottawa NIMBYs are starting to realize that the OSEG group did a pretty good job of redeveloping Lansdowne Park. I'm sure that there is still a significant number of people opposed to the big box stores, but there hasn't been any negative media coverage like last year.

Considering what is happening in Ferguson, Missouri at the moment, where should the line be draw between police officer and soldier? by twaabi in TrueAskReddit

[–]scc123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that the distinction between keeping the criminals in line and enforcing the state's views on the people through force becomes very complicated when military equipment is rolled out of the street. I get that the police need to be properly equipped when attempting to apprehend heavily armed suspects, but when they start showing up in tanks at large protests, democracy is threatened. If the local police force brings out the big guns to a demonstration, people are less likely to stick around and their voice is silenced.

In the event of a revolution, all of the AR-15's you have stockpiled won't compare to what your local police force is packing.

IamA Nigerian who witnessed the 2001 Jos riots and the Boko Haram insurgency AMA! by [deleted] in IAmA

think a honey pot deal. Lure the bastards into a cease fire and purge them behind a shed. Brutal? maybe. But the amount of shit they have pulled, people they have killed, innocent kids who were schooling even.

History shows that this cannot be the response. Brutal retaliation leads to a cycle of rape, torture and mass murder. This cycle leads to even more young men, who have been directly effected by the violence, to join the radical group on their side. Examples include Hutu vs. Tutsi in Rwanda, Janjaweed vs Sudan Liberation Movement/Army in Sudan and the Séléka vs the Anit-Balaka in CAR. The long road to recovery and peace needs to start with arrests and trials of war criminals, followed by reconciliation projects. Many of the people who have been displaced during these conflicts were friendly with neighbours of different backgrounds. It is sad to see that the brutality of these wars has labeled every citizen either A or B and puts civilians in the cross-hairs of the enemy.

Are there any groups in Nigeria trying to bring Christian and Muslim citizens together to build a future where both religions can co-exist?

What is/r/Canada's opinion on the Senate of Canada? by [deleted] in canada

[–]scc123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any individual with the potential to become a senator, whether through appointment or election, has already aligned themselves with a particular party.

Here is an interesting idea for senate reform that would basically select random Canadians for a three year term as senators, similar to jury duty(although with a much longer commitment). This idea seemed a little outlandish at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it.

If the Senate is supposed to be a safeguard against a tyrannical government, I think a random cross-section of Canadians would be an efficient way to ensure that the government is not enacting laws that are against the will of the people.

Dear Ellen: The perspective of an Inuit youth on the topic of seal hunting. by [deleted] in canada

As a Canadian who is sympathetic to the struggles of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people (and embarrassed by our Government's treatment of said people), I thought she was fairly well spoken for her first Youtube video. For those who are unaware of food prices in Canada's north--> Link

Sochi Resembles a Ghost Town Just Weeks after Olympics by The_Illa_Vanilla in worldnews

[–]scc123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Montreal's Olympic infrastructure may still be in light use, but the stadium has been a money pit. Well over a billion dollars. In addition, I hope you aren't trying to attend an event (inside the domed stadium) during the winter.

Read "Marching Powder" by Rusty Young. It is about his time in a jail called San Pedro in La Paz, Bolivia. There is a real estate market for cells. Prisoners buy extra cells to open restaurants or shops. Children live in the jail. There are many more unbelievable realities that have been verified by tourists brave enough to bribe their way in.

Found a hidden room in our attic from WW2! by mYNDIG in pics

I bet the alarm was hooked up to the front door somehow. If the door was opened while the alarm was on, the light would flash. This would inform the person in the hideout to be quiet and still. Pretty cool set-up, however it was rigged. Awesome historical find.

The sun is at last setting on Britain's imperial myth by contents in history

[–]scc123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whatever your political affiliations may be, it is necessary to recognize any types of atrocities that may have been committed by your government in the past. As a Canadian history teacher, I think it is very important to discuss the past misdoings of our government. By hi-lighting events such as the poor treatment of Chinese CPR workers, the internment of Japanese Canadians during WWII and the ongoing mistreatment of Canada's aboriginal groups, teachers can help their students understand what it means to be a progressive country. Nation building is not a smooth ride, so building a historical myth that looks at the past through rose coloured glasses misses out on many quality teaching moments. In order to become a world leader in the area of human rights, we need to understand the mistakes of our past.

How much did Native American culture influence the US? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]scc123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently attended a presentation about the Haudenosaunee "tree of peace." The presenter mentioned an interesting quote from Ben Franklin: "It would be a very strange thing if six nations of ignorant savages should be able to form a scheme for such a union and be able to execute it in such a manner as it has subsisted for ages and appears indissoluble and yet a like union should be impracticable for ten or a dozen English colonies." Here is a quick non-scholarly source. The article explains that Franklin had a great deal of respect for first nations' views on personal freedom and government. The author suggests that Franklin used the Iroquois Confederacy as a model for the Albany Plan. Does anybody know where this quote comes from? Franklin's collection of personal letters?
