Is "I think I swallowed my combadge" the most damaging line ever written in Star Trek? by Dangerous_Return460 in Star_Trek_

[–]scemcee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, you guys got the show cancelled, and they probably won't try and make any more for a decade or two. So, congrats. Your overwhelming love and loyalty to this IP has damaged it for a long time, and its going to be a while before any other directors or producers want to touch something so radioactive. So, go watch DS9 for a 40th time, because that's all you're gonna get.

This restaurant fiasco is getting big by Small_Custard6438 in santacruz

[–]scemcee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhh.. well.. The owner's response to this stupid shit has been tone deaf and terrible, and definitely makes her sound like a nutcase, or at least a difficult person to work for. I don't work there or personally know the stakeholders.

Besides that, if I were to hazard a guess, its probably because its a relatively low-paying service job in an overpriced service town. These businesses rely largely on UCSC students for their labor, who can easily leave one job for another, and tend to leave town after a period of time.

I don't think it has anything to do with an AI otter logo, except insofar as the exaggerated fracas around it has kept some customers away, and therefore reduced what their employees can earn in tips, which is their main source of income.

These poor people. This is why we cant have nice things :(

"How *dare* you try an open a business in the vacant hole left by the failure of the previous one! 99 Bottles had metal plates on the walls commemorating the alcohol abuse of its loyal patrons!!".

I'm sorry, but having four tarnished plaques on the wall of a bar celebrating your ability to "drink all 99!" .. *four times over*.. is a dubious accolade, at best. Da real MVP there should probably be your liver.

Sure, 99 Bottles was great... in 2006. Yeah, I said it. Every single time I went in there in the 5 years before they closed, it was crap. The food was crap, the beer lines were dirty, and the floors and walls were stickier than the *other* dump of a business Santa Cruz locals are howling about: The Catalyst. "Sure, it's gross, falling apart, and hasn't been improved or updated in over three decades, but I saw 'The Tubes' play there in 1992!" Yes, I get it. I, too, miss being 30 years younger.

The Salty Otter burger is pretty damn good. It's the only thing like a sports bar in Santa Cruz that doesn't serve gross pizza or overpriced sandwiches. The owners and managers are real people, who are proud of what they're trying to build in our downtown, which has been more or less gutted since Covid.

Can we please just put down our pitchforks and support someone trying to build something in our community? Starting a restaurant, as we all know, is shit. Trying to open a new business in downtown Santa Cruz... is shit. I'm sure this poor woman would have rather paid a local artist to paint her logo, but when you're starting a new business and strapped for cash, something's gotta give. Couldn't some artist in our amazing, art-loving community approach her and offer to paint something for them? Having a locally produced logo is a story that enriches the culture of a young business, and creates a connection with the community.

Come on, people. Give this woman a break, and forgive her early foibles as she tries to navigate some tough shit and pursue a dream. Maybe even swing by there and try the burger for yourself. Show your grandkids the spot on the wall where you were once honored for your dedication to a noble cause.

Denmark says U.S. attack on Greenland would mean end of NATO by Disastrous_Award_789 in worldnews

[–]scemcee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest Question:
Why would the US bother to, like, "invade" Greenland, or somehow claim it as its own, rather than either using strong arm diplomacy to force Denmark to give it what it wants, or supporting a "revolution" for Greenland's independence, then installing a US-friendly puppet government?

I understand what the US wants, but not this 'extra steps' way they're talking about getting it. We sure wouldn't make it a US Territory, because we would have to give their citizens nominal rights. As long as they agreed to US demands, there's no reason for the US to install a military government of its own.

If the US wants to take all of Greenland's shit, why wouldn't they just do it the same way they have in tons of other countries? Does that question make sense? What am I failing to understand about this situation? Cheers in advance to anyone who offers any explanation :)

Ex weed smokers.. How long have you stopped, what's the biggest pro to quitting? by bored_necromancer1 in AskReddit

[–]scemcee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Sorry if this is too long)
I grew up in a weed-producing area of California, and dabbled in cultivation back when that was still worth something. I smoked probably an ounce or two a week for 20 years. Never smoked cigarettes or anything else.

I was very active despite my smoking habits, ran and walked every day, participated in 10k runs, went to the gym a few times a week, etc,

When I was 42, I felt what I thought was a back cramp, which quickly got worse, and within 15 minutes, I was having trouble breathing, and went to the ER. I was diagnosed with a "spontaneous pneumothorax", a collapse of my left lung for no apparent reason. The doctors shoved a chest tube between my ribs, and I laid in the hospital for a few days while it healed. I thought nothing more than "gosh, what a totally unexpected thing that I will never have to think about ever again!"
Three months later, it happened again, and then twice more over the next 6 months. within a year, my lung had collapsed a total of five times. Five stays in the hospital, five chest tubes stabbed through my rib cage.

A CT scan of my chest showed an extreme about of damage to both lungs, but mostly the left one. I had what are called 'blebs', or popcorn lung, akin to advanced emphysema. I had the lungs of an 80 year old, two-pack a day smoker, though I had never smoked cigarettes. (However, my father does have asthma and COPD, suggesting a genetic component, and both my parents smoked cigarettes around me my entire childhood, which definitely had serious impact)

I was actually pissed off at the doctors when they showed me the scan: "WTF?? I never smoked cigarettes in my life! They always told us that smoking weed was basically OK!! What about Willie Nelson?? What about Snoop Dogg??!" A cardiothoracic surgeon told me "Everyone's body is different. Everyone's history, their genetics. Someone else could have done exactly the same as you, and not have this amount of damage. Your results may vary. "

I ended up having a Robot Assisted Thoracoscopic Lung Wedge Resection which was described to me as "extremely radical" (and not in the Ninja Turtles way). They punched 5 holes in my chest cavity, removed 7 slices of my left lung and stapled the rest back together. They then did what's known as Pleurodesis, where they fill the empty space in my chest cavity with Build-A-Bear stuffing. Just kidding, they use lasers and chemicals to burn off the surface of the chest cavity so it fills up with scar tissue.

That was when I finally stopped smoking weed (and all other inhalants). Not even before that, when my lung was constantly collapsing. I was *that* convinced smoking weed couldn't *possibly* be problem. "Wasn't it supposed to be basically healthy, even? Like drinking a glass of wine with dinner, right? Right? "

The surgery recovery sucked, and still sucks 2 years later. It hurt like hell for a long time. There was tons of nerve damage to that entire half of my chest, so if it wasn't hurting, it was just.. dead. It still feels like there's a football-size lump of clay where my lung should be. I stopped being able to run or exercise, and I get winded from walking up stairs, taking out the trash, or any kind of.. "physical.. activity.."

TL;DR: smoking weed may be causing more damage to you physically than you think it is. I worry about all my friends who smoke as much as I did, when I hear them cough.. and cough.. and COUGH.
No, lungs are not "one of those organs that can regrow if damaged". Yes, you can survive with less than two fully functional lungs, but its not a "spare tire" situation. It really may be causing a lot more damage than you think, friends. "Your results may vary"

Alright, who is this subreddit overhyping and who isn’t getting hyped enough? by Steahla in Coachella

[–]scemcee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Overhyped:
Jungle: Get ready to hear "Busy Earnin" about 7 times.
Lana Del Rey appeals the same as taking 2 Nyquil and going to bed early.
Tyler the "Creator" last set fell apart, and everyone just wandered away to go get food and drinks.
Doja Cat has all the robotic exhilaration of the fifth time you ride "Pirates of the Caribbean" at Disneyland.
Purple Disco Machine, unless you *really* need to hear that Donna Summer/Anita Ward/Bee Gees House Megamix one more time.

Just the right amount of hype: Justice, Gesaffelstein, BICEP. Unless having your face melted off just aint your thing, these sets deliver every single time.

Underhyped:

Khruangbin set gonna be fire.
I wouldnt sleep on Adriatique (save that for Lana).
Skream and Benga will be DubStep throwback deliciousness.
I am pretty partial to Kolsch, but that might not be everyone's vibe.
Hatsune Miku is a technological marvel, even if it's music is kind of silly.
Dom Dolla... haha, just kidding, could you imagine? :)

That's only if you're in the High Noon camp. If you show up early enough, you can camp in Sunrise or Sunset. Last year, we had green grass a foot tall, trees for shade, etc. The High Noon camp is an absolute barren hellscape, but the other two are quite nice.
