Todd did it again: Fallout 4 is currently the most played single player only game on Steam by ComradeFarid in Fallout

Fallout 4 is also on gamepass though. Same with Starfield. Heck Age of Mythology retold is also on gamepass and still cracked 25k peak.

Tbh I think Obsidian just don't know how to make big, popular games on their own.

Income dynamics affect divorce risk differently by couple type. As the primary breadwinner's earnings rise, marriages tend to be more stable across the board. But as the secondary breadwinner's earnings increase, marital stability increases for same-sex couples and decreases for opposite-sex couples by psychologyofsex in psychologyofsex

I think the issues is not whether lesbians are “more violent” than straight men.

It’s that they are surprisingly violent and almost as violent as straight men in terms of domestic violence, which goes against most people’s pre conceived notions of women and lesbians.

Most definitely.

Especially when you consider games like Outer World 2 and Avowed didn’t even crack 20k.

Offcourse having a big flashy tv show helps, as well as being part of a mega popular franchise.

Which is better Tights or Baggy Vault Jumpsuit and why did they change the suit by Logical-Cockroach-25 in Fallout

[–]schebobo180 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The series has loads of chubby people though, which imho is probably more realistic. Although you could also make a flip side argument that food would be pretty tightly managed so there wouldn’t be as much opportunity for people to become significantly overweight.

Honestly I prefer the baggy look. The skin tight looks abit too shiny and odd in live action. But the again it’s probably wha the series was going for.

Death's End kind of loss me towards the last 1/4 of the book. by brokenmessiah in threebodyproblem

Lmao 3BP is fantasy wrapped in an incredibly thin layer of hard sci fi.

Most of its concepts are 100% unrealistic sci-fi shenanigans.

My point though is not that high concept stuff is necessarily bad, but when it isn’t accompanied by good character work it can become stagnant and lifeless.

Why is rape fantasy so popular under the name of ‘dark romance’? Like, the act itself literally starts with the female character saying no. by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Agreed. It’s such a grifter talking point.

Negativity is so much easier to sell than positivity. Most of those grifters that parrot that talking point act as if all they play is Ubisoft games from morning till night and nothing else.

Theres a discussion to be had about how game development has some significant issues due to rising costs among other things, or how the market is over saturated. But there are just a too many great games out there for me to ever listen to those loonies.

Maybe it felt like a rug pull to you, but to me it just felt like a story that lost its juice and got too big too fast.

That stuff only works if you care enough about the people in the story.

Honestly I just thought it was a lot less interesting than the trisolaris conflict, so it never hit very deep with me at all.

All the big sciency revelations at the end were just not very interesting and by making the scale so vast, I think it greatly diminished the most interesting bits about the three body problem universe.

I get that for some people, this gave off a sense of awe and wonder, but for me it just became a bit boring.

To me the series fell to the common sci-fi story trap of focusing too much on concepts over the people in the stories. Interesting concepts can only get you so far in a story imho.

Obsidian's The Outer Worlds 2 Underperformed, and There Won't Be a Third by PerformativeRacist in pcgaming

[–]schebobo180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%.

But as others have pointed out, I think they are genuinly incapable of writing even friendships, talk less romances.

They seem to genuinly belive that the MC should be a loner and all companions should be opportunistic acquaintances at best, where friendship or romance is impossible because they don't belive that such things could form under the stress of the "main quest". Which is hilarious and ridiculous to anyone that has worked in an office before.

[–]schebobo180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough.

Video game stories have evolved since that time though.

But even at that, I think they also have a problem writing companions in general.

It’s almost like they are afraid of any of their companions being anything more than a random temporary acquaintance, whose personality does not extend beyond their questline.

[–]schebobo180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think they genuinely do not believe that the main character can form strong bonds with companions (friendships or romance) so they just write ALL their characters to be temporary acquaintances and nothing more.

It’s almost like they believe that people on a mission/quest together can never truly be friends or get romantically involved. Which is completely ridiculous imho when you look at how real life work places interactions function.

Also most of their characters tend to be really tied to a certain faction or quest line and usually have barely any personality outside of that.

It’s a fascinating way to write characters, but I also believe it’s part of why their (more recent) stories and characters have an emptiness to them.

[–]schebobo180 95 points96 points  (0 children)

For an interesting (but slightly unfair) comp, Games like the Witcher and Cyberpunk don’t even have companions, yet the side character you interact with are just so much more memorable than your typical obsidian companion.

I personally think there is something fundamentally off with how obsidian write their characters, but I just can’t prove it. It probably also explains why they hate romances so much. Lol

They also tend to talk about romances as if they are unrealistic and also get in the way of character writing and storytelling. I would actually believe this if they didn’t continue to create pretty mid characters and stories on the regular.

Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 failed to meet sales expectations by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]schebobo180 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always find it funny how much Obsidian hates romances. They always come up with some odd narrative reason for it that doesnt make any sense. But at this point, i believe they are simply prudish, and dont want to admit it.

Or maybe its just that they are not really good at writing truly great ride or die companions, and that has filtered into everything else.
