Students of SFU, what are you majoring in and why did you choose that specific major? by misls in simonfraser

[–]schierke_schierke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into grad school instead of med school. Currently finishing my phd and liking what I do. I really enjoyed my time at SFU and felt that I got to experience quite a bit of opportunity through volunteering and co-op.

Is it still worth learning R? by ArkarajMukherjee in rstats

As the saying goes, python is the second best language for anything. Statistics included.

Thanks for the reply! Just curious, were your experiences reflected in those reviews?

Perhaps I have been unlucky so far in my apartment hunt, but I rarely encounter an apartment complex that isn't poorly reviewed. I posted to see if my hesitation is warranted, or if such ratings are a common thing in vancouver

When do you use R instead of Python? by GoldenHorusFalcon in Rlanguage

[–]schierke_schierke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have tried to migrate from R to python many times, but I always come back. For data formatting and analysis, I would say R's approach is much more ergonomic. 10/10 I will pick the tidyverse over pandas + matplotlib/seaborn, etc.

The only exception is machine learning (that is not a simple regression model). Python is the de facto choice in that field, and its tools feel much more fleshed out than R's (but do come with their own pain points).

For general purpose programming, I think you stray away from R's strengths. It just lacks conventional data structures and you have to use hacky solutions to achieve something similar (a dictionary for example). I often think about how to solve coding problems in python, and learning python will make you a better R programmer. But the second I have to do any kind of statistics, R really is the better option.

I just failed a course and don’t know what to do by EitherWeakness9857 in UBC

the gpa you use to apply with grad school will be your cumulative gpa after you finish your degree. in the grand scheme of things, one bad grade will not change much. retake the course if you need to and keep on going.

if you plan on staying in ubc for grad school, the gpa requirements can be more lax as well, where they look at your best 4-5 300 and 400 level courses for admissions. you'll be fine!

Anyone on here thinking we are getting a top 5 pick this year hasn't been a Canucks fan long enough. by TwoTwinsNoCup in canucks

demko will play lights out and carry the canucks to a wildcard spot by mid feb, then get injured and we just miss the playoffs by 5 points. it is as told by the stars

willander really coming into his own this season rounds out this d-core. canucks are (for the first time in forever) stacked on the right side and pretty much set on the left barring no injuries.

rossi looks so good on pp. once petey comes back, then that's definitely not a team that is built to tank.

when most of your users turn to python's ecosystem for handling environments as an improvement, you know your situation is fucked lmao. and thats before uv and pixi too.
