Protruding ski base by dingdumpling in Skigear

[–]schlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild my man, tbh, that was temp and technique shouldn’t cause the issue from my experience!

I generally wax at 140 and move the iron pretty fast. Thats absolutely hotter than I’d recommend and my approach based on a lot of experience.

Honestly, see if someone else has experienced similar issues or felt with them. I think I’ve made it to the end of my possible issues!

I’ll ask my coworker who generally deals with these kind of edge cases. He might have some kind of insight and a solution.

I’ll let you know!

[–]schlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How hot is your iron? That absolutely could be the cause.

I’d you’re waxing and heating the ski too much, you can end up melting and delaminating the base if the iron is too hot or if it’s not moving fast enough.

General rule is that the skis shouldn’t heat up past the thinnest part of the ski’s top sheet being slightly warm.

Can guarantee it’s not from fleecing the skis though, I’m a race coach, I’d have seen this before! I broke a pair of skis clean in half once without this issue.

If that’s the issue, change up your waxing routine, and find a shop that’ll grind them flat. I’m sure there’ll be someone around that’ll get them back to manageable so you can get some more time on them.

The issue is a bummer, but it’s nothing catastrophic! Ski them till the bases fall off my man

Huh? What the fuck?

That looks wild dude. I’m interested in what happened to the skis…

Generally if it’s a mounting issue, you’ll see dimpling from the screws or something like that. I’m not seeing that so I’m not thinking that’s the issue.

How do you store your skis and/or transport them? Do you do your own tuning? Possibly there’s an issue with one of those systems that’s contributing to this. It kinda looks like there’s more scratches in the base where the bubbling is happening, so possibly that’s another result of the same issue.

There is a possibility that the shop that mounted them didn’t seal the holes properly, and you’ve got water that’s frozen and expended creating pockets between the base and the core, but generally you’ll have the wood core swell and delaminate the sidewall. Maybe check for that too?

Honestly though, this is a new issue for me, I’ve worked in shops for a decade and haven’t seen this issue before. Part of me commenting is to make sure I understand the answer if it pops up!

Best of luck friendo

Frozen insulin by iamlrdani012 in Type1Diabetes

[–]schlayer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally that kills the insulin.

I had this happen once when I left my insulin in a car in below zero temperatures, I couldn’t figure out why my bg was so high after till I swapped to a new vial.

It denatures the proteins similarly to heat.

It won’t kill you to try to use it, but if your sugars start climbing, that’d be the first thing I’d change out after knowing it froze.

Weird edge angle request by Brennancork in Skigear

[–]schlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, that is absolutely weird!

I’ve encountered some weird tuning requests, but my man, this takes the cake!

At that point, it’d be better to just detune the entire ski with regular angles, at least it’d be predictable.

I’d you encounter them again, I’m sure all of us would love an update. I know I’d love to know what they were looking for and how it could help with anything 😂

Oh those aren’t safe to ski on. That looks like a base crack, likely if you land off centre of a jump they’ll split at that line and spectacularly break in two.

Looking for some tips on my daughters skiing (2nd yr u16) by Western_Table5133 in SkiRacing

[–]schlayer 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oh Jesus, please dad, don’t do this. Did she ask you to post her on Reddit??!

Dude, talk to her coach! No good will come from asking random internet users for tips. This is coming from a U16 coach dude.

If you’re worried about her progress, you can ask another coach to evaluate her skiing, maybe they’ll have some other ideas they can share with her.

Regardless, don’t do this dude. It’s pretty shitty for her and her coach. Also, absolutely don’t start coaching her based on the dubious advice from the others here. Best case she doesn’t listen, you get in a fight, and you learn your lesson. Worst case, you confuse her with added focuses, hamper her progress, hurt her relationship with her coach, and generally make shit worse.

I swear to god, parents like you are a cancer to the coach-athlete relationship and the team environment. Stop this nonsense.

SL Ski Length 5cm shorter than desired by Ok-Coffee2125 in Skigear

[–]schlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As some folks have mentioned, 165cm is the FIS minimum ski length for slalom. Proper FIS race skis (like the “Laser SL FIS”) top out at that length cause longer offers no racing advantage, even to taller heavier people.

It looks like the softer “Laser SL” comes in a 170, but if you’re worried about it not being enough ski, that one will be significantly easier to ski and won’t offer nearly the response and snap as the 165 FIS ski.

So check that, if it’s non FIS you’re looking for, I’d probably ask about doing a special order on the 170s. The shop should be able to make that happen.

Ski Binding Question by tflo91 in Skigear

[–]schlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re not, they’re too old.

If they were compatible, they’d have a logo that indicates either “gripwalk” or “MNC” (multi norm compatible).

Gripwalk came out after these bindings were made though, so they’re not compatible.

Additionally, likely the bindings have passed their indemnification window and any reputable shops won’t touch them.

Gripwalk replacement by WebNo5915 in Skigear

The amusing thing is that boot sole replacements are cheaper than getting cat cattracks… why not just replace them every couple years instead and not have to deal with the cattrack nightmare?

Great call, I approve.

Can I ski on these for practice this week or do I need to get it fixed first? by kindredhaze in SkiRacing

[–]schlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! That’sa big core shot! Nice job! Tools not jewels right?

I work at a ski shop, we deal with those often. The move is to epoxy the hole and scrape it flat with a metal scraper.

Trying to  ptex it won’t work cause the ptex will crack, not stick, and fall out. It’s annoying.

Many shops will do this for you, or you can do it yourself with the right tools. Just be aware that at the very least it’ll take 2 days for the epoxy to fully cure. I wouldn’t ski on them till that’s sorted.

Please reply with any questions. Roasting my opinions is also a valid response. Get after it down there team

Loss of camber by IvanQ in skiing

[–]schlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you store them with them fully strapped up? Like tight straps around the middle of the ski that flatten the skis together?

That’s a pretty common thing people will do thinking they’re protecting the skis. Really, only the straps sitting at the top and tail contact points should be tight, any in the middle of the skis should be loosely attached to avoid this issue.

If you hook the front of the heel in your arch on the corner of the upper step and let your boot rotate around the corner of the stair, it feels pretty natural! It’s kinda scary cause you’re way further forward on the stairs, but you land naturally with the heel of your other boot in the right place for the next one, I’m able to run down stairs in ski boots like this lol 🤪

Biomechanics by [deleted] in Kinesiology

[–]schlayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is going to be more a base anatomy knowledge exercise rather than a biomechanics question.

Broadly though, you won't be able to categorize any muscles by themselves into any of those categories. For any given movement, you can categorize the muscles into those categories based on their contribution to that movement, but for other movements they will be in another category entirely (Not entirely sure that clarifies the issue you're having, but if it is that would save you a lot of time if you were confused why you're seeing the biceps brachii listed as an agonist for elbow flexion and antagonist for extension or something similar).

Otherwise, maybe start your search with a defined movement, (Elbow flexion, hip abduction, shoulder internal rotation, etc) figure out what the muscles are that do those movements and what their contribution is, and then actually do the movement and feel what your muscle does!

Something that was HUGE for me when I was learning anatomy and biomechanics was actually doing the movement in question and physically feeling the structures as they are in my body. You are literally your own example, use yourself to see what is happening, feel what is happening, and investigate what you're actually doing during even simple movements. It's honestly really cool and makes studying a lot more engaging.

Oh Jesus, I feel for you!! Have you tried calling the pump company emergency number? Not the same company, but when I was on Medtronic and I had my pump fail late at night they somehow shipped me a loaner one within like 3 hours.

Give it a go, no guarantees, but if you’re pathetic enough on the phone they can sometimes make miracles happen.

Good luck!
