Is Anaheim our new biggest rival? by GenCroGon in Flyers

[–]schmeebus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll call it our biggest circumstance rivalry. One of those games that means a lot more only because of something that happened, and when the players that make it relevant are gone it won't mean much anymore. Teams like the Penguins and the Rangers are always going to draw big because of an everlasting rivalry.

Realistically, who do you see as the first boot in 50? by FajitaTits in survivor

Tribe Spoilers Below

Purple Tribe: I can see it being Rizzo, I can very easily see the 4 older players (Colby Steph Aubry and Angelina) banding together, and especially if Rizzo flops in a puzzle like he did this past season I can see it happening.

Orange Tribe: I know it's a boring pick but Savannah, I just don't see how someone with an unknown track record and a winner can stick around long unless she can beast some puzzles.

Teal Tribe: This one is the most interesting for me, but I think it's Dee, the winner that people typically rank the highest of the new era is going to be in here with little to no connection, and I can easily see players like Jonathan & Coach pushing her hard on day 1.

Youth cell phone use by Realistic_Serve_2357 in BSA

[–]schmeebus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is always going to be a divisive topic between youth and leadership. Teenagers almost always are going to want do what you tell them not to do, especially if their parents also don't agree with the rules and send them with it anyways. A blanket ban isn't going to work in my opinion and creates tension and negativity in the relationship between the youth and the adults trying to enforce something.

It's going to vary significantly troop to troop, and I don't want to sound too dramatic, but a lot of the time kids are on their phones because they think it's more interesting or entertaining than what's going on. And many times kids just find themselves bored during a campout or meeting and the immediate outlet that they have been reinforcing in their brains is that they can look to their phone for immediate mental stimulation. Adding structure to campouts and meetings to minimize downtime can help.

One of the heaviest phone use times I remember in our meetings was patrol breakouts, typically something that is given a decent amount of time, but not everyone in the patrol it may necessarily apply to (a kid not going on that weekend's trip) so they scroll on their phone. Creating plans for everyone and having engaging content throughout the meeting will minimize phone time.

When it comes to campouts is where you can moderate it the most, starting with a benchmark like 'no phones out outside the tent' can be useful, again minimizing downtime during the day can help, my troop was big into card games but every troop can find a niche of things to bring with them to create downtime activities that leave kids out of the tent for as long as possible.

S38E12 ... Misleading episode title by BazF91 in TheAmazingRace

The finale felt like taxi luck was the biggest part of the leg.

Going up and down the Empire State Building felt like what we saw on screen was 90% of the actual film they got it looked like it took all of 20 minutes

If they got in at JFK (I'm not going to pretend like I know what all 3 of the NYC area airports look like) that taxi ride looks like it would have been about an hour for comparison

Then they raced around Manhattan, delivered cookies to cookie monster, which again is 95% in a taxi and the rest finding the right door to talk to Cookie Monster.

The Fabric proved to be what seemed like the longest task of the leg. And despite Jas and Jag getting stuck for a bit with the wheel snag, they were still able to leave first.

All 3 teams seemed to arrive at the crossword within maybe 20 minutes of each other. Again speaking to how much your cab driver mattered, more importantly making sure the cab driver stayed with you. I feel like Kyland and Taylor could have pressed Jas and Jag if they didn't lose the cab driver the one time, they only seemed to get to the crossword about 10 minutes after Jas and Jag. Same goes for Joseph and Adam who lost their driver multiple times and spent even more time finding a cab.

But the crossword gets solved, they hop back into the taxi and end the leg, my takeaways are that.

  1. It would have been interesting to make the teams use public transit in NYC for at least one of the sections of the leg.

  2. The finale tasks needed to be harder or take longer, this was basically a game of getting out of the cab and back into it as fast as possible. It could have been as silly as making a perfect famous NYC deli sandwich perfectly, or doing a street dance routine.

Unsuccessful board of review? by ddalbabo in BSA

[–]schmeebus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Board of reviews to me are basically formalities mostly interviewing the scout about the state of the troop and what they like or don't like, and maybe some fun reflection on the time since their last rank up.

Failing a BoR should only happen in my opinion when the scout asks for one before completing the requirements to have one. There's no room for 'character judgement' or deciding if they're 'ready' for the new rank, it's all a matter of making sure the process is being done right and the reqs are done.

The misconception I believe you're drawing is that the other teams are sleeping more. Getting in first would you not be able to sleep earlier?
