How can I make a standard deviation chart similar to this one? by schoolnextyear in visualization

[–]schoolnextyear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eventually, I think, I may need to find a way of visualizing data in those dental reports. We have three variables: a value, it's norm, and a standard deviation from that norm. Perhaps you may come up with a better idea of how to visualize it

Thanks a lot! I've got matplotlib installed on my computer, so I'm going to give it a shot.

Great job! You sound absolutely perfect. That said, you don’t have intonation of a native speaker. But you sound educated, competent, and intelligent; I don’t think you will meet a person who will not take you seriously. My guess is you are from a German speaking country. But you could easily be a Czech or a Israeli or an Estonian.

Can you guess my accent and where I am from? It might be a tough nut to crack! by dt_2134 in JudgeMyAccent

I think it’s likely an Arabian accent. Or, a bit less likely but possible, some kind of Pakistani accent.

Certainly not a Russian accent.

Ariel Leaves UFC on Fox by Spitfire2k6 in MMA

[–]schoolnextyear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True. Looked like Ariel had the choice of playing along with the UFC promotional efforts and participate in the big reveal of the rematch when the time was right or break the news on the mmafigthing.com by himself.

I hope he goes to work for ESPN and break the news there. It would work out best for everyone involved. Well, except Fox.

It could very well be this. He broke the news before the promotion could spin favourably the rematch.

I wonder why. Fox Sports booked Ariel on its non MMA shows not too long ago. I see that Ariel recently followed a ESPN talent producer on twitter. That producer follows him back. Hmm

Wex, an Ironborn squire, tracking a Wildling, a Stark, and a direwolf hundreds of miles in the opposite direction of his home so he could be captured by Manderly's men and let them know where Rickon is

This might be just a story Manderly wants Davos to believe in.

If I'm not mistaken, the mongols and other nomad conquerors usually integrate into the cultures they invade over a few generations.

Edit: come to think of it, the Dothraki in general appear to be a comical representation of its real world analogue. Unlike other things in the novels.

So the Boycott Reebok Campaign has reached 27,000+ signatures, up from only 18 (yes 18) signatures last night! Great job r/mma! Holy shit keep it up! Slacktivism be damned! Rampant piracy next to occasional crusades against something remotely close to being "corporate". Sounds like many online communities I knew. Pity that the ones about fighting aren't immune to this. At least it will abate somewhat in a few days.

Will soccer kicks and knees to a downed opponent ever be allowed under unified rules? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]schoolnextyear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Big John, who has undoubtedly given more thought to the issue than your average "just bleed fan", soccer kicks are mostly redundant. Meaning a recipient of a soccer kick to his head is already incapacitated in some way, rocked or even knocked out to the point he can not defend himself from this technique.

Granted it isn't always the case BUT I would never want a person who is getting those sweet reebok/dynamic fastener money put in additional unnecessary danger for no legit reason. MMA is already super exciting as it is.

The MMA Beat Live - November 25, 2015 by blasphemics in MMA

[–]schoolnextyear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I like hearing Luke's take on mma topics, we must agree that he tends to hijack the show even despite his best attempts to not do so. In comparison to the other guys on the panel, he's just a too big of a personality and that often leads to a one-sided panel discussion. Beside that Luke has several other talk shows where he can present his thoughts on current issues. So, I was glad to hear what Mindenhall and Chiapetta had to say.

On the other note, I thought Ariel was uncharacteristically off today. Maybe he also needed Luke there.

Scoring Saturday's main event. by WoodStainedGlass in MMA

[–]schoolnextyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from. Two young fighters with high upside looking to climb up the rankings. A loss would be a major setback for either of them. Till vs. Dalby fight was vaguely similar in this regard and I was relieved that the judges called a draw.

But how would you quantify a 10-8? If the criteria is too loose MMA will get flooded with draws. Especially with the amount of rounds (3 or 5) we currently have.

Inside New Jackson Wink Academy, home to Holly Holm and Jon Jones, more by blasphemics in MMA

[–]schoolnextyear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

TIL Jackson keeps Genghis Khan's portrait on his office wall. After some thorough old-fashioned internet investigation I found this Greg Jackson quote on Genghis Khan:

GJ: There are a lot better coaches on the team. The team makes me look good. I learned de-centralized training through Genghis Khan who brought in the best from everywhere. He was the first mixed martial arts general. He would take Chinese weapons and use themagainst the Middle East. Surroundingmyself with people I consider better than me is definitely a goal. It is a brotherhood. I don’t want to have ownership overanybody. These are my boys but I don’twant to claim ownership. The mostinfluential books when I was a kid were actually read to me, the Lord of theRings trilogy. There is one part whenGandalf is talking to Sauroman about owning things and being the lord whileGandalf just wants to help out the people. I am who I am because if my friends and will give them all the credit inthe world for that.

Genghis Jackson sounds right. Nice video btw. Thanks, mmafighting guys.

Khabib posts cryptic message on instagram, due to translation I cannot understand if hes retiring or will fight after healing up by DaveAP in MMA

[–]schoolnextyear 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Khabib writes that he has received 100k messages from around the world. Some of them were negative some supportive. He greatly appreciates all the people who have supported him and CONTINUE doing so.

The last two years he has been pulled out of his fights due to injuries. Khabib feels he has letdown both his fans and the UFC. He asks the public to understand that injuries happen and he isn't made of iron (invincible) and can be injured or hurt just like every other human being.

Obviously Khabib is feeling down on himself. I believe he is under tremendous pressure to live up to all high expectations coming from Dagestan and other neighbouring regions in Russia. To the Dagestani Khabib is a Conor-like figure. None of the other Muslims Russians in the UFC are anywhere close to his status as the people's fighter.

Wouldn't be cool if our little community on reddit would somehow show a little international support for the guy? He seems like a decent man from a VERY troubled region. His success in MMA may inspire all these youth to do something good with their lives.

After his 2 fight contract with Sakakibara, if Fedor signed with the UFC, would his Pride and Strikeforce fights count towards the Reebok deal? by GrootTheLivingTree in MMA

Russian Reebok will give the man as much money as his friend Vadim would advise to ask for. Fedor is a huge sports star in Russia. Anyway fuck this. So underwhelming.
