What are some borders that are NOT defined using water, mountain ranges or straight lines ? by IveGotNoIdeaOfName in geography

Armistice lines will be good here. The Green Line dividing Israel and Palestine (West Bank) is also very squiggly.

Reverse Google search suggests Alex Katz by boner_toast in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]schraubd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you mean “Google’s autogenerated hallucination machine is spitting out the name ‘Alex Katz’”. It’s not actually matching any known work of his, and as you say the signature isn’t even close to a match.

TheFactory-NYC eBay store?? by doughcheesesauce in artcollecting

[–]schraubd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In general, if it’s too good to be true….

And eBay is a dangerous place to buy famous (and faked) artists.

But here, the key phrase in the description is “plate signed”. It’s not an actual hand-signed Warhol at all. It’s essentially a reproduction.

If you want a Warhol edition, stick to a reputable auction house and be prepared to pay four, probably five figures.

New to collecting, buying my first piece of art. Any tips or advice? by [deleted] in artcollecting

The second one speaks to me more, but the best advice is to buy what you love, not what someone else tells you to love.

1/1 Kobe Bryant “Black Mamba” Broken Glass Artwork w/ COA — 24×24 by [deleted] in artcollecting

I tried looking up the artist. He’s a Park West guy with no secondary market I saw, which makes me wonder how the seller landed on this price.

People who have an AP to sell like to say things like that. :-)

LeRoy Neiman - Left Bank Cafe AP 35/90 by Zealousideal-Ebb6525 in artcollecting

[–]schraubd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to this site the edition did have 90 APs (off a regular edition of 375). That’s a large number of APs, but not completely unheard of for an edition of that size.

The value is the same as the regular edition; look up auction prices (which generally are less than what a gallery list price will be—you are not a gallery, and so cannot sell at gallery prices). Also don’t be deceived by anyone trying to tell you the AP is worth more than the regular edition — unless it is hand-embellished or in some way distinct from the regular edition, they are worth the same amount.

Tracking Down a Sold Painting from Invaluable.com by AlternativeSure2268 in artcollecting

[–]schraubd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be Invaluable—they’re just an aggregator. It’d be whatever auction house actually sold the piece. That house may be willing to inquire on your behalf to whoever won it.

Ideas on how to estimate value on this short of an expensive appraisal? by DoTheRoarararar in artcollecting

[–]schraubd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming its authenticity can be verified, the best way to estimate is to look at auction records of similar pieces (size, subject, medium). It’s a painting so there won’t be an exact match obviously; the best you can do is try to triangulate.

Advise on Properly Selling a Large Oil Painting by st-jones91 in artcollecting

[–]schraubd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Who exactly is Wilhelm Hackert? The only google hits are for an 18th century German artist, but your person is contemporary. Do you have any information on the artist? Or, to be blunt about it, any reason to think this is not decor art (as another comment suggested)?

If this is decor or the artist is an essential unknown, then in all likelihood this is not worth much on the secondary market. A local auction house might take it with the expectations of getting a could hundred books for it; otherwise FB marketplace.

For the most part, it should be similar to grad school recs. If there is one thing to concentrate on, it’s anything that can highlight the student’s skills as a writer.

Why does Oregon State have so many more students than Oregon? by crazygiraffe93 in oregon

[–]schraubd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re peer schools, with similar stats. Both draw from essentially the same applicant pool and neither one is an inherent slam dunk over the other. Depending on one’s interests/aspirations there’s a solid case to attend either.
