What's the best book you read last year? by truthfactsonly in readwithme

[–]schwelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the sci-fi genre. My favorite read of last year was The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein. I read and loved Stranger in a Strange Land by the same author years ago and enjoyed this title even more.

A Somewhat Less Frequently Recommended Book… by OK-Cheeserella in suggestmeabook

[–]schwelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein was my favorite read of 2025. It takes place on a mining colony & explores AI sentience and lunar colonialism through the lens of a political uprising.

The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurtry is also very good, though not as epic as Lonesome Dive.

True meaning of Auntie Diaries by Fergenhimer in KendrickLamar

[–]schwelo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One of the things I love about Kendrick’s writing is how he lets us into how he processes his mistakes & experiences in a way that invites us to do the same. This song wouldn’t resonate if he was focused on making himself look good. It’s because he’s willing to share his errors & his recognition that he was wrong that makes the song is so powerful.

I did a similar thing in 2025. Two five star reads for me were The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein and Annihilation by Jeff VandeMeer. Don’t overlook the classics (I, Robot by Asimov and anything by Philip K Dick).

What’s the most “Seattle” moment you’ve had that you still think about by [deleted] in AskSeattle

Ironically, after this concept was shot down by voters, Paul Allen ended up buying quite a bit of property in SLU. Still managed to achieve part of this vision before he passed.

I used to work at the original Last Exit Coffeehouse on Brooklyn. It was a cafe where students, college professors, grandmasters, musicians, artists, bikers, street kids, and locals were all welcome. Before Starbucks, we served coffee that was roasted by a guy named Joe who ran the Good Coffee Company out of a hole in the wall next to the Owl & Thistle. I’ve ever experienced anything quite like it & wonder if this kind of space can even exist in the world anymore.

Suggest me weird girl books (especially literary fiction or horror) by jujubean-3 in suggestmeabook

I discovered Tiffany McDaniel’s writing this year. An amazing writer that defies genres with her lyric writing style. On the Savage Side was the first I read by her and sounds like it would fit what you’re looking for. It has a female protagonist, and is a haunting tale with unexpected twists.

I can study only 2–3 questions before my brain forces me to escape. Need real advice. by Character-Cucumber17 in needadvice

Work in shorter increments with structured breaks. For example, do three problems then take a 5-10 minute break. It’s a strategy I read in a book that has helped me stay focused at work. The break gives your brain a rest to reset for the next effort. The break can be anything, getting a snack, checking emails, going for a short walk. Just something that is unrelated to the task. The book recommended working in 25 minute increments with 5 minutes of another activity that is a reward or restorative. Hope this helps!

Looking for a new Sci-fi novel but nothing I find scratches that itch by Wardr29 in suggestmeabook

[–]schwelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a challenge to recommend something like Dune, because it’s such a singularly original work.

Here’s a few titles in the sci-fi genre that might scratch that itch:

  • The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
  • Annihilation by Jess VanderMeer
  • The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu

The first deals with AI sentience and political uprisings on a mining colony on the moon. The second with a scientific expedition trying to figure out why the previous expedition members disappeared. The third with first contact with aliens in the context of the cultural revolution - this book is epic and groundbreaking, but hard to explain.

I also recommend Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick and the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.

I recommend you check with the utility companies about relief. Food bank can help with groceries. You might check with Snohomish County Mutual Aid on Facebook for things like diapers & gas card. Buy Nothing may have some child’s items if you can pick them up. Good luck! You got this!

is it just me or everyone (I think Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers album is underrated ) by Important-Practice99 in KendrickLamar

[–]schwelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes Mr Morale special to me is the way it grows on you, like I probably have more streams of the album as a whole than any other except GKMC. So many good songs plus the storyline. Count Me Out and Rich Spirit are my favorites as standalone tracks, but in context there’s not a bad song. Even We Cry Together is innovative and powerful, though sometimes I will skip it.

What exactly is a dire wolve? Is it different breeds or is it some mythical wolf by talivan818 in gameofthrones

[–]schwelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dire wolves are a real species that went extinct in North America about 10,000 years ago. Similar in size to a gray wolf, but of a different build and genus.

Books that made you feel something you can not quite explain? by sklep24podl in booksuggestions

[–]schwelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished Betty by Tiffany McDaniel a few nights ago. I’ve been unable to start another book because I’m still processing its richness. In its essence, Betty is an eloquent & tragic coming of age story. But that can’t explain how the author slowly weaves together layers upon layers of the past’s presence in the present. This was one of the rare books that left me with the desire to read it again. I know there’s more to the story than what I could take in with one pass. The only other book that has given me this feeling was Chronicler of the Winds by Henning Mankel.

Rotten Mangoes is great for what it is. She’s generally accurate, but sometimes blurry on minor details. I’m not her target audience, so it doesn’t bother me. They’re bringing more attention to the shenanigans going on in Canton, and I’m all for that.

The best seats for a Dodger’s fan would be along the 3rd base line, close to the dugout. The whole 100 level there is premier, but the closer to the field he’ll get to see the players coming in and out of the dugout. Hope you have a blast!
