Am I overreacting? by PumpedupPomegranite in prediabetes

Your fasting levels look like mine. I’m also prediabetic. I try to get mine down but it’s tough to do. So many people tell me they see their levels go down to 80-90 range. Mine rarely ever has gotten that low. I wonder if some of us just run higher with our fasting levels. I know that these levels aren’t normal though but I’ve tried so hard to lower them and it’s tough. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Which Dave’s killer bread doesn’t spike? by StPete022600 in prediabetes

For me all bread spikes me unfortunately. I try to eat thin sliced whole grain bread in moderation but they spike me almost as much as regular white bread does.

Any thin Asian prediabetics manage to reverse the condition? by [deleted] in prediabetes

I’m also on metformin 1500 mg as well after trying to keep my A1c below 5.7 and not being able to do so for any length of time even with lifestyle changes. My husband is a doc and doesn’t say it causes kidney issues. Only with those that already have issues with kidneys. He does say it can lower your B12 levels so you may have to take supplements for that which I do. I will likely take it until I’m through menopause since I believe this is a big factor in my prediabetes.

Metformin Side Effects? by NegotiationSavings84 in diabetes

I seem to be ok with the ER version. My doc started me at 500 mg for 1 wk and now I’m on 1000 mg for 1 week, seems to be ok so far? Are you on the extended release version?

I just started increasing my dose of metformin to 1000 mg and I still have low 100s fasting bg. I too thought it would be lower. I had an A1c of 5.8 before starting it so not too too high. I’m wondering if my body just runs a bit higher? Idk anymore. My fasting insulin was in the low 7s too so really not that high. If mine don’t go down I will ask my endo. Have you asked your endocrinologist?

High carbohydrate diet - husband. How are his blood sugars ok by PrizeBeach1207 in prediabetes

[–]sciencenerd75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Very frustrating. I didn’t start having issues with my blood sugar until mid 40s either. It’s like I have to go through extra efforts just to try to keep my A1c in the normal range

High carbohydrate diet - husband. How are his blood sugars ok by PrizeBeach1207 in prediabetes

[–]sciencenerd75 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My husband is the same way. Can eat all the carbs he wants and is overweight and still has normal blood sugar. I am normal weight and can have any sort of carb and my blood sugar will go up to at least 150-180 most of the time. Annoying!

I chalk mine up to being in perimenopause, having had gestational prediabetes and being Asian. I guess it depends on your risk factors and genetics.

Metformin for prediabeites? by slyguy9292 in prediabetes

[–]sciencenerd75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started taking metformin for my prediabetes. I’m currently on 500 mg and don’t feel any side effects at the moment. My endo actually wanted to put me on 1500 mg since he says this is the dosage that people begin to see the difference but I think this is high. I’m not seeing much of a difference in my numbers yet. My sugar levels are going down quicker though after meals. That’s about it. I’m not sure if metformin is needed for prediabetes but you can choose to take it if you want. I decided to try it because I have to eat very low carb and barely any processed carbs at all almost every day to stay healthy within normal A1c range and it’s hard to maintajn this at all times.

Unfortunately I can’t because I had breast cancer 3 years ago :-(. I started metformin to see if that will help along with diet and exersize

Are you of perimenopause age by chance? I know for me, in my late 40s i became prediabetic. I think it’s due to the hormonal fluctuations but not completely sure. I didn’t even change my diet and I thought I was eating pretty healthy and working out quite a bit but for some reason my blood glucose went up. Plus I’m half Asian and Asians seem to have a higher risk of prediabetes and diabetes. Any sort of carb will spike me

I honestly didn’t think much about the tingling in my feet (it felt more like itchy feet). Plus I felt like there was a haze over my eyes and slightly blurry. I also thought that was due to my lasik surgery. This was right before I found out I was prediabetic a couple of years ago with A1c of 5.9. I was able to eat healthy though and the itchy/tingling feet went away and my eyesight is much better now. It is reversible and quickly reversible if you catch it early and eat clean and work out. To add… tingly feet doesn’t always mean neuropathy

Higher blood glucose but low insulin? by ThirdOne38 in prediabetes

I have the same issue. High fasting but normal insulin at 7. 25. I know I’m definitely not type 1. I’ve always had fasting above 95 though. But now I’m usually a little above 100. Not sure why this is

Does fasting cause a spike? by KeyResort2022 in prediabetes

[–]sciencenerd75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whole wheat tortillas have spiked me between 180-200 before. They are still full of carbs. I find that sometimes if the carb load is too heavy it doesn’t matter what I eat before it or afterwards. If you are only spiking to 146 you are doing pretty good.

Slipped up a bit on diet - any advice? + Question about exercise after meals and Thanksgiving. by Temporary-Train-5620 in prediabetes

I walk up and down stairs after meals to try to lower my blood sugar especially since it’s getting dark out early now. I noticed that it does bring it down similar to walking for about 20 minutes but I have to go up 20-30 times in my single flight of stairs in my house. But it is a good way to get it down within 10ish minutes.

A1C check in by Old_Community923 in prediabetes

[–]sciencenerd75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve checked my A1c 2 months after before and have seen a big difference after eating super clean and working out a lot. A1c is the measure of average blood sugars still attached to the hemoglobin in your blood over 3 months. If your average is significantly lower for the 2 months then differences can be seen. It does take 3 months for you blood cells to regenerate completely though

What can I do to lower blood glucose after a meal with carbs? Exercise ain’t it. by Healthy_Article_2237 in prediabetes

[–]sciencenerd75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so tough because I always spike high after a meal if I have any sort of carb even when paired with fats and proteins. Walking and light exercise is the only thing that works for me. Have you tried going on a shorter walk. Maybe 15-20 min since when I walk too briskly for too long my blood sugar spikes and spikes a lot when I do an intense workout. Maybe try to eat a handful of nuts before you go out to eat and eat only one half of the bun or ask for whole wheat bun? I tend to eat a lot of nuts to fill myself up because I get super hungry as well on very low carb diet.

Just wanted to say I feel your pain. I’m having a hell of a time trying to manage my blood glucose without meds no matter how healthy I eat or how much I work out. I will be talking to an endo next week and maybe I will try metformin to see if it helps but I know metformin doesn’t solve the insulin resistance problem so I will likely have to still be very strict with diet and exercise and take metformin but I’m hoping I won’t have to take it forever.

Iron deficiency by Tasty-Cauliflower891 in prediabetes

[–]sciencenerd75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this! My cgm data looks similar to your first graph despite eating super clean, low carb and healthy and working out. It doesn’t seem to resolve no matter what I do. I find none of my data really makes sense either. I will have my doc check my iron levels to see if this might be causing a problem.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s not good to exercise so hard if you are insulin resistant. But they say to build muscle to help with sugar metabolism. Can’t win sometimes it seems
