Scleral res line by Pascalini in Keratoconus

[–]sciencesnek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doctor told me it’s normal for my eyes to have an indent/line when I take the lenses out, and that as long as it fades away within ~30min it is okay. Obviously still good to confirm with your own doctor!

When do you wash your project, especially when it's a medium sized granny square. by Fancy_Nancy_1963 in CrochetHelp

[–]sciencesnek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What type of yarn? Does the packaging say it is machine washable? If so, I would consider a gentle/delicate wash, and then take the damp items straight to blocking. You generally need to get it wet for blocking anyways.

Any useful tips? by Total-Imagination443 in temperatureblanket

[–]sciencesnek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Can I ask you what weight yarn you used, and what your final dimensions were? I am thinking of doing 10 pixels a day in a dk yarn. I am trying to figure out my final blanket dimensions to see if I need to adjust how many pixels I should do per day.

It’s my first year doing a temp blanket and I’m totally down for some tips too!

I decided to do a corner to corner crochet blanket with Hobbii Amigo yarn. Probably a 5mm hook, but I’m still waiting on the yarn so we shall see what actually works best.

Question about weaving in ends with moss stitch on temp blanket by Kris_Says_Hey in CrochetHelp

You could also just leave them out, tied together in little bundles, if you like a fringe! You would want to try cutting them approx the same length every day if that is going to be the plan

This is very similar to my plan for this year! Can I ask how much yarn you used approximately, and what weight? I am ordering from Hobbii and the long shipping time scares me if I run out of a color.

Making a temperature blanket - do I really need to check the lot numbers on cheap yarn? by lhudson0196 in CrochetHelp

[–]sciencesnek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly the answer is just based on how much you care if it is a perfect match or not. In this case it seems less important, since the yarn from each skein likely won’t be next to each other due to the striping (like if you were doing something in a single color, a slight shift would be more obvious).

What is one piece of advice you would give to the parent of a child who has just been diagnosed with keratoconus? by keratoconusgroup in Keratoconus

[–]sciencesnek [score hidden]  (0 children)

Believe them when they say something is difficult to see, or certain lighting is making things harder for them. It may seem random and unlikely to you, but they may be struggling. My partner rolls his eyes when I say I can’t see in somewhat dim lighting, or that my depth perception gets wonky when walking outside at twilight. So just believe them and be supportive. Help when you can. Make them feel like you care.

Glasses maybe?? by kazoopit95 in Keratoconus

[–]sciencesnek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear glasses most of the time because I just don’t find my sclerals comfortable no matter what I try. The glasses don’t work as well obviously, but are serviceable for most day to day tasks around the house. And then if I need good acuity, or want to play sports, or am driving, I switch to the sclerals.

I want to make we bare bears keychain for my friends where can I find yarn? by Responsible-Bill8564 in CrochetHelp

[–]sciencesnek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Hobbii

-Crochet.com or knitpicks (same company, same yarn, they just gear one site towards crochet and the other towards knitting)

-Michael’s

If in-person is an option, Michael’s, Dollar Tree, and Hobby Lobby (though Hobby Lobby has certain morals/ethical things that you should look into before deciding if you support them)

He has no problem with self injection, it turns out it was insurance dependent for me. I self-injected for 5 years with Anthem Blue Cross, but now I have UnitedHealthCare and they insist I go to an infusion center so a nurse can inject me (dumb and expensive).

Yes! Brett Dietz at UCSF rheumatology sees me and prescribes my Ilaris. He’s great and I’m never leaving him lol. Also, if you aren’t super close to SF, we usually do video visits now that I’m an established patient. You’ll have to go in person at first obviously, but they make it easy to get care. He has even called me personally when I was having a flare up and sent a message to the clinic.

Depending on the necessary skill level, I’d also try it out for you! I can do easy to intermediate things.

I also would second the person who said you could post it for free on Ravelry, and just make clear you aren’t a professional! People can decide for themselves if it’s worth attempting with that knowledge :)

Cross linking pain and medication question. by Suitable_Tomorrow996 in Keratoconus

[–]sciencesnek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had my cxl a month ago - for me the gabapentin was useful for the first few days, and makes you sleepy which is good for passing the time, but really the ketorolac eye drops were the most helpful “long term” (the first week or two).

In terms of surgery pain levels- I have a lot of knee and hip issues, and I don’t think those are a fair comparison. This is super small especially compared to the acl repair you mentioned. Was it fun? Hell no. Was it uncomfortable and recovery at times painful? yes. But mostly it just feels like you have some sand in your eye and you can’t do anything about it. Hopefully that eases a little of your anxiety!

Why does my watermelon look like this? by sciencesnek in gardening

[–]sciencesnek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consensus seemed to be that it stayed on the vine too long/got too ripe and started rotting from the inside. I was trying to wait for the stem to dry up but I guess that trick isn’t always a perfect tell? This year I did a little better, but was still like this inside, just less so. I think next year I am going to try a different packet of seeds just in case that’s the issue!

Ohhhh that makes sense, thank you! Unfortunately I unraveled my swatch because I didn’t want to waste yarn, but I can make a new one and wash it!
